Firstly great review - enjoyed that, well done!
So i've got the 2023 RS3 - Kyalami Green, Saloon (Yes i am very lucky i know - waiting list is at least a year but I lucked out) - Middle East Spec with honeycomb stitching, Alcantara wheel. The ME base spec vs Europe or US spec is definitely a lot more prestige and we are very lucky to have that over here. Now I've wanted an RS3 since i was a 18 (34 now) and the reason i bought the car was purely based on a number of reasons. I'm a circuit instructor down at the Dubai Autodrome and Abu Dhbai Yas Marina Circuit and have raced various forms of motorsport my entire life (single-seaters and cars). Now be it that I am an instructor, I have the privilege of being able to drive the BMW 330i, M240, M2 Comp, M3 Comp, M4 Comp, and M5 on a pretty much weekly basis. You can't fault the Ms, however, they are heavy, somewhat dull, do miss character, and the electronic systems (if on) do take a lot of the fun away. The RS3 however, has class handling (despite its understeer reputation), is extremely nimble (despite its somewhat heavyish weight) and the sound of that V5 is to die for. Yes, it lacks that mental crazy mode, but trust me if it did have it, you'd probably end up in a wall if you didn't know what you were doing cause the acceleration and speed this thing does is just crazy enough. The point being - interior is class, handling is very good (well done Audi on the new Quattro system), sound is immense, its planted on acceleration and corner speed, while also technically being able to put the kids in the back. If you were to consider this over an M240 or M2 - it will come down to preference - but in my opinion owning this and driving all the Ms around a circuit - Audi RS3 all the way. Anyone on the waiting list - keep waiting. Anyone who has one - I salute you. Anyone who doesn't - I hope you can get one.
PS I've not tried drift mode yet ... but Launch mode is ridic and good enough for me :)

I have a mk3 TT and after driving with the flat bottom steering wheel I love it. I would miss it going to anything else. I never thought I would have this opinion but it's just so comfortable. It is easily the best shape wheel I've ever had in a car. Not just the flat bottom section but the fact that the sides are slightly bumped out in the right places that your hands just fit where you like to hold the wheel.

Ya I've got one too but am in a very northern climate. I took delivery in November, so I only drove the Pirellis for about 2 weeks and then had to put some different tires on it. In fact I had to drive the Pirellis during one little snow storm, which was quite the experience. There was a noticeable difference for sure after changing.
I actually think the car handles really well though. I had an M2 Competition before this, and I can take corners every bit as fast in the RS3 as I could with the M2. There might be a little less feedback in the wheel, but I don't really care about that personally. What I care about is how well it can actually traverse a road, and it does stellar in that category.

Aside from the engine differences, that awesome 5-cylinder in the Audi and VW's venerable 2.0 TSI platform in the GLI......I'm assuming that RS-3 was utilizing the 7-speed DSG gearbox as is in my GLI? I feel like I got so lucky... I found one of these on Cars and Bids last year and won it for just under MSRP. I wasn't even really looking for one, it just came up and I decided to put in a few bids. The last 6 months spent with it have been nothing short of incredible, and I don't miss what it replaced in my garage--a 981 Cayman S. And yes, a set of PS4S helps the handling, but the "odd" chassis feel is definitely still there. Power down through a cloverleaf ramp and the line tightens, but if you lift off, understeer prevails, since the fancy rear diff can only do it's work under power load. It's so opposite to what driving RWD cars has taught me. It's definitely a quirk, but one worth getting used to because of the SOUND!

As an owner of the last gen RS3, agree with your love of the engine. It's the sweetest thing. Also, performance tires on the inverse stagger make a heck of a difference. Despite the transverse mounted engine and MQB architecture, the car actually has a hint of oversteer, not the usual Audi understeer. And, while steering feedback isn't great, it replaced an M235i in my house and it was a definite improvement on that front. Unfortunately, the new gen not coming to Canada so we live with what we have! Other than a very modest power tweak, the two aren't that different,
Love your stuff ... and love this review.

I've had the 2023 8Y for about 5 months now after waiting about 9 months after ordering. I traded in an M2 Competition for it, and it's packaged exactly as this one is. Sports exhaust, tech package and black option. It's probably not everybody's cup of tea, but I really like it. In fact, if Audi would just offer the damn thing in a manual transmission, it would be about the perfect car for me. The M2 was more exhilarating, although this is actually a little faster in spite of that, but overall I'd say it's the best car I've ever owned.
Oh and one thing these reviewers NEVER mention is how much better Audi's b&o stereo is compared to the others in its class. It's INFINITELY better. To me that definitely matters.

If you had a choice between the Audi S3 and RS3 - which would you choose?
Currently, I am the market for a new car and have narrowed my options down to those two options. Unfortunately, none of the local dealerships ever have either of those models in stock and when they do that are immediately sold - so I am unable to test drive either.
I am seeking an executive luxury daily driver with power/kick and extremely smooth shifting. I have no intention of ever drifting but tend to have a lead foot on the highway lol so would like the ability to do high speeds easily.
The 5 cylinder engine on the RS3 sounds so tempting but I wonder if it's too much power.

I get most of the gripes with it but a lot comes to how it’s spec’d. If you get it with all the bells and whistles it won’t disappoint, yes the transmission feels a little sluggish as does power in comfort and eco etc etc but put it into performance mode and it all changes and is a completely different car, let’s face it when you select comfort you are not after performance and that’s how it’s programmed. I found the handling is a bit wanting in all the modes when you push it until you select performance and it just corners brilliantly when pushed hard. Highly suggest order it fully loaded as that’s what an RS is about otherwise if you want to sacrifice a little and save some cash get the S3

Audi’s Quattro system is essentially front wheel drive with some power sent to the rears when slippage is detected. Combine that with a forward mounted engine and you’ve got an understeer situation that cannot be overcome. BMW’s AWD system is more rear-drive oriented, but still, it adds weight and complexity. For me it’s RWD only, and only with a manual.

I would like to see it have ventilated seats. At its price point and segment the S4 has ventilated seats and now even the accord and Camry come standard with ventilated seats. And even VWs Jetta GLI also offers ventilated seats and it’s half the price. The engine is the main selling point of the vehicle. And it’s a good engine. I actually like the RS3, being a former A3 and GTI owner. It occupies a sweet spot in performance versus price, along with the Cadillac CT4 V Blackwing and BMW M2, as long as you stay away from expensive options like ceramic brakes. However, I didn't buy an RS3/CT4 BW/M2 due to price - $60+ is a lot to spend on a car with the engine being the best feature, especially when you also own a Ducati sport bike (which will annihilate any of those cars). I spent $40k for a used Alfa Giulia Ti Sport with low miles. New RS3 or lightly used RS5? Which would you choose, assuming both are very close to the same price?
The car will be modified, and my goals are over 600whp and get low 10's in the 1/4. Both have the aftermarket support to reach these goals. I like the relative ease of modifying, the looks, and the lighter weight of the RS3. But, I also like the luxury, the more RWD bias, and just overall presence of the RS5.
I don't like the relatively FWD nature of the RS3 (though I am aware the new rear diff helps with this), nor do I like the relative lack of luxury on the inside cabin. On the other hand, I don't like the idea of buying a used car (ie the RS5), nor do I like the complexity of the RS5 as working on it/modifying it would be a lot more tedious and more work vs the RS3.

I’ve driven most of the RS range and they are all brilliant and you can mod them to some crazy power levels, the RS3 is in development phase with some performance companies so won’t be too far away to unlocking it but there are currently mods you can do. You can't evaluate this car with full winter tires. Period. Why couldn't you try one in a warmer clime with more performance-focused tires?
That said, this car is all about the engine and that's cool, but like many high-performance cars today, it's speed can hardly be used on the street without fear of losing your license.
Knowing that and not being able to see/drive one of these beforehand and recognizing that the RS3 would be mid $60k dollars for me, I checked out the Alfa Giulia, a Ti Sport model with the base, 280 HP 4-cylinder. No, it doesn't have the power of the RS3 or quite the price, but the vehicle dynamics made this an easy decision. The steering is wonderful, the cornering is sublime and you can feel the 50/50 weight distribution, plus the ZF automatic w/paddle shifters is great (and I'm coming from a manual GTI) and the exterior is easier on my eyes than this Audi. What I give up, besides the extra power, is dealers around every corner and, I guess, resale value, but I intend to keep this car long enough that resale was not a major factor. M340i w or w/o Xdrive is the much better buy at this price / class, though it is technically a class above. At least that is my BMW biased opinion is lol.

Audi’s Quattro system is essentially front wheel drive with some power sent to the rears when slippage is detected. Combine that with a forward mounted engine and you’ve got an understeer situation that cannot be overcome.

M lites aren't going to be as good as a RS3 in driving dynamics, and the Audi is faster, and much lighter! M240i xdrive is what I drive by the way!

340 is big, heavy, boring ubiquitous. You will lose money when you sell, I won't lose a dime in the RS3 and I'll have more fun
