The Disney movie was inspired by the Charles Perrault version of the story (which was written before the Grimm version). There is a fairy godmother and glass slippers in that version. The stepsisters have a much happier ending in the Charles Perrault version, Cinderella forgives her two stepsisters and marries them off to two wealthy noblemen of the court.
?didn't she get the "cinder" part of her name because she was forced to sleep in fireplace ashes/cinders? (me, asking myself at 1:39-1:45) yyyep. (the video at 2:00-2:09)
