    Come to think of it, the stereotypical nature of the Queen's disguise may further illustrate how easily Snow White *should* have been able to see through it.

    Well...This is my FAVOURTIE adoptation in the whole wide world,and actually this was my fave scene, I have watched it I think more than a million times every since I was like 5...I loved the way the woman talks and how they could disguise her so much with this makeup...and duh, kids don't think about the logical 'you were attacked just a day ago' stuff LOL, don't get adult-like and boring about it...see the meaning, not the outside...

    Why did this part scare so many of you? This was my favourite part, I loved the background music, it was sooo soothing, and I loved how Diana Rigg talked, I mean her strange melody of speaking, I thought she acted foreign really well, bcs most of the ppl when they try to mimic foreign accent, don't change the wordstress pattern, which she did...and I loved that sparkly comb as a child!:D

      Because of the lighting in the fact that she's a murderous "geisha" speaking strangely ( because her accent is horrible), with a pale white face that would look very forign children (she doesnt look like a geisha). She looked more like a supervillain. And yellow face rightfully so, should be unsettling to people

      I LOVED this scene as a kid but I definitely found it disturbing, too. The way the Wicked Queen is dressed as this serene, mysterious geisha and then she basically stabs Snow White in the head, her calm demeanor changing to a crescendo of maniacal cackling and dramatic music. I always loved the way the Queen scurried off through the fog as that ominous score played! It's just a very intense scene, especially for a kid's movie.

    Update: This is insulting not because she's dressed as a geisha or the traditional Japanese melody in the background and with her song, but the fact that she's not only doing a mock accent, but is actually evil. At least the character of the queen is anti-Japanese. But even then the fact that the filmmakers were able to get away with this is strange, especially considering in the 80s yellowface generally didn't fly and yellowface in media was starting to become rare. This just catches you off guard.
    Also, young Snow was shown sleeping in one scene with a geisha doll so thats why I don't think the filmmakers were racist.
    But the two big questions are, why are there geishas being randomly thrown into this movie that not only takes place in Germany, but has nothing to do with geishas? Why is a geisha selling combs, geishas are not merchants they are entertainers.

    • @blerksnarfgut2766
      @blerksnarfgut2766 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I think the Queen probably remembered Snow White's geisha doll, and figured she'd disguise herself in that manner to endear herself to Snow White, in order to gain her trust. Also, if you notice that when we first see the Wicked Queen in this movie, she's getting dressed by her ladies-in-waiting, and one of them pulls her corset laces too tightly while another accidentally stabs her in the head with a comb, and those were meant as foreshadowing for the ways in which she'd later try to kill Snow White. A lot of stuff with the Queen early on in the movie has a pay-off later on in the movie, which I think was pretty clever scriptwriting.

  • @romanaii
    @romanaii 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Would they get away with it now? As in political correctness

    • @finland4ever55
      @finland4ever55 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Probably not, although even in the 80s this was taboo, but this was made by an independent company, so they snuck this past. But considering she's doing yellowface and putting on a mock accent, this is indeed appropriation.

  • @FilmSureelist97
    @FilmSureelist97 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Are we all not going to realize how racist this scene is???? 😳😬

    • @finland4ever55
      @finland4ever55 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree. Not racist because she's a German dressed as a geisha, but because she's the wicked queen and also puts on a mock accent, so she is not trying to be harmless, she probably actually hates Japanese people. but then as a child they showed Snow White's favorite toy was a geisha doll. Why are there geisha references in medieval Germany? Dunno.

      This isn't yellowface, though. The Queen's face is painted pure white in the style of a geisha but you can't call it yellowface because it simply isn't. Also, let's not forget that the Queen is a villain and isn't concerned with being PC. Any offensiveness on the character's part only adds to her wickedness.
