Paddle blades come in different shapes and sizes. It's the shaft size that should be measured with the blade submersed to the neck

Good tip Steve and one to consider to make sure you're submerging the full blade when paddling. Cheers, Beau

Solid recommendations for me as beginner/intermediate SUP boarder that just bought light fixed size paddle.

Correct paddle height for Nordic stroke technique (training-racing in a dugout) is around your own height, otherwise you hurt your shoulders and have to much struggle in bringing the paddle forward to the catch phase.

i am 83kg and 179cm. normal strength. but managed to beak both and alu and get a crack in a carbon paddle. what to do ?

      Were they cheaper based paddles?
If you put power into an aluminium paddle you will eventually bend it but a good carbon paddle should be able to take a beating! Thanks Reuben

I had thought, and have my paddles a littler longer than these recommendations...I thought with a longer paddle, it would be easier to “reach out”the paddle, and get a longer powered stroke...? Thoughts?

Hi Rusty. Paddle heights can be a personal preference. You may get a further reach with a longer paddle, but it could be awkward/uncomfortable in the transition phase when you need to bring the paddle back to the reach, or switch sides. It's also down to your preferred technique though so if you feel comfortable, then it's ok. Have you tried a shorter paddle?
      Thanks, Beau

Great comment from SUPboarder. Also, if you strive for power, the longer paddle the wider your grip (between your hands) has to be in order to have a good and comfortable paddle stroke.

@@SUPboardermag I do use a shorter paddle in the surf...and a smaller blade..
