TLDR for this update: new Ristar rig, new facial expressions system, revised animations, new bird robot enemy, implemented a combo system, and preview of a boss fight with a new original boss, Mecha Song Bird.
This video introduces the finished redesigned Ristar model I shared in update #2. The old Ristar model from the first video had his 5 seconds of fame, but now he spends his days lounging in his floating bubble, drinking Hi-C and munching on mango Starburst. It took quite a bit of elbow grease to transfer all of the animations and code over to the new Ristar rig, but it's definitely worth it - Ristar can now have more dynamic facial expressions! Only a few facial expressions are featured in this video, but with the ground work now set up, it should be a fairly quick and simple process to add a bunch more! Please note that there are still more edits to make to this version of Ristar, particularly minor proportions and texture work on the hands and feet, keep an eye out!
I've also revised a handful of the animations, such as Ristar's idle and old wonky walk cycle animations, and added a few new animations as well.
Everybody likes showing off with combos, heroically bouncing from enemy to enemy with a path of destruction trailing behind, so I've added a combo system. When you attack an enemy, each subsequent enemy you hit without touching the ground adds to your combo count. Earn high combos to rack up your score multiplier and be rewarded with goodies, like extra gems and health pickups!
This update also sees the addition of a new (old) enemy - the robot song birds from Planet Sonata! It's been over 25 years since Ristar faced off against these mechanical monsters, so it's no surprise that they've swapped out their rusty parts and returned with some upgraded machinery. Some remain stationary and peck the heck outta you when you draw near, while others relentlessly pursue you, masterfully maneuvering ontop of their big metal orbs. Also introducing a sneak peek at the first draft of Mecha Song Bird, a massive robot bird boss who's tasked as the guardian of a secret treasure and will do anything to keep intruders away - particularly those with 5 points and long arms.
There's also been a lot of behind-the-scenes additions and tweaks since the last update video, a bunch of technical mumbo jumbo, so I'll spare you the deets, but just know that the whole framework is coming along very nicely.

You could tell me this was like, a cancelled Xbox Live Arcade game and I'd believe you. The level of polish even this early on in development is crazy. Genuinely one of the most impressive things I've seen and I don't say that lightly in the slightest. This deserves so much more love. Amazing stuff dude!

Also, it was really cool seeing the robot song birds in 3D, Planet Sonata is one of my favorite areas from the original game.
Planet Freon is my personal favorite, that planet is so cozy, so calming, I love it

The original game was so colorful and vivid and had an eye-popping art style, so this looks a little dull by comparison. The backgrounds and ambience really came alive in the original and I would love to see that happen with your game to the same extent.
EVERYTHING else is so great. I would honestly pay full price for this any day.

It's sad how Ristar was a character with a lot of potential and Sega left him there. This project is incredible, to the point of seem like a early version of an official game, it's even difficult for me to complain about this, it's just perfection. I love this cuz Ristar is one of my favorite childhood characters, Thanks for revive me that nostalgia and read.

You should be proud. This clearly, even in an early development stage, has more love and effort put into it than anything sega would be willing to rush out recently. Excited to see the future of this project.
This looks amazing! But at 0:42 , I feel Ristar should a bit more stretch when flying, with a bit more flare like in the original game. Just a suggestion. Keep up the great work!

NGL This should be pitched to SEGA or someone to do an release similar to how Alex Kidd remaster got out because this looks solid as hell!
Well, this definitely has my interest. The original Ristar is my favorite classic SEGA game of all time, and I'm mad it never got a sequel! Definitely can't wait to see how it gets as you work on it more!

whoa! i love the fact that Ristar's model looks more like the original spritework, but with some modern touch-ups of the first model. (and his animations have become very expressive, i love it! the little smile while grappling from one branch to the next, the shocked face when taking damage, the joyful face when flying through the stage. it's so polished already and the game's not even finished.)
my god, what i wouldn't do to give this game a try, maybe you could make a small little demo of the first map? (i probably would play it to death)
you're making a masterpiece here, i can already tell. (at least in comparison what sega's been releasing the last couple of years. good grief, sonic colors ultimate was a complete and utter disaster)

I'm a bit worried about the speed of the gameplay, however---something that made the original Ristar stand out was its slow, exploration-based gameplay.
What worked back in 1995, won’t exactly do much good nowadays.
I think a run button will be helpful for many people so it improves the pacing of the game for them, and levels can still be designed around the running in mind and be exploration based.

Nice little demo. The Boss music make me think more of Sonic CD than Ristar that said. Speaking of Ristar, happy to see him looking less angry than in the first demo. That said, he still look a bit too much like he did in the US version to my taste. (Look a bit angrier there than in the Japanese version. Not sure which look he got here in Europe.)
1:35 - Love the use of Sonic CD's samples for the boss theme. Fits very well!

You have no idea how happy this has made me, Ristar was one of my fav Sega Genesis games growing up and you're making it justice at making it coming back with such a lustrous level of graphic design with this fangame. This level of professionalism on a early prototype is insane, this also looks too official for me!

If I could offer a suggestion, could you give Ristar some actual star-themed powers? Like shooting stars from his hands or mouth, star-powered shoes for short hovering, star punches and star kicks, star zap dashes on the ground or air for speed or attacking enemies, or some kind of star-themed powerups? I think that'd add more to the gameplay experience than just the extending grabbing limbs.
This made me so happy to see! Hopefully it's still being worked on and we can see some more progress on this :)

My god... this is *AMAZING.* So much love, care and *PASSION* has went into this. I mean, just *LOOK* at those models, animations and expressions! They feel so high-quality and official!
This is amongst one of the most criminally underrated IPs ever. It has a truly original platforming style that has never once been replicated in any other game. I *PRAY* that this fangame doesn't get cancelled or the dev team abandon the project. It's so unbelievably good, and we rarely ever get fully complete fangame releases, especially of this scope. :(

This is giving me Pac-man world 4 vibes, that one cancelled game but holy moly this looks fabulous. As someone who has play Ristar at least 3 times on Sonic's ultimate genesis collection on the xbox 360 this looks outstanding, specially the model. I wish you the best of luck to make this project as great as possible.

The only thing I find a bit strange is the over-use of saturated colours. The original was very bright and vibrant, whereas this has a more natural, earthy tone to it.
