How to Identify Broad-tailed and Rufous Hummingbirds: NARRATED

  • Identifying the two males is a cinch. IDing the females, though, is another matter! These hummingbird feeders without a lid were at the cabin we rented. I do not recommend feeders without a lid because the birds can fall in during a fight and drown. By the time I realized that, I couldn't reshoot the footage, but I did buy a more appropriate feeder to leave there. PLEASE CLICK 'LIKE' IF YOU APPRECIATE THE MOVIE. (Filmed at Estes Park, CO)

Jo, your videos are still so amazing! Just got back from the Rockies and the hummingbirds were everywhere! This was so timely to watch - and also enjoyed the full life cycle of hummingbirds video that follows yours. So amazing!

Hi, Lisa. I hope the hummingbirds swarmed around you wherever you were staying in the Rockies. They certainly did at our cabin, and I couldn't get enough of them. I'll make time to watch the full life cycle of hummingbirds. Thanks for the tip.

Very informative video Jo, thanks for sharing your knowledge of these neat little birds. We love our broad tail hummingbirds here in Colorado who have been nesting by our house the last few summers. For the first time (in the last 3 days) the rufous hummingbird has made a visit and is chasing the broad tails away from the feeder. Interesting to know he is on his way south.

Kolibříci jsou nádherní ptáci. Bohužel v Evropě nežijí, můžeme je vidět jen v několika málo ZOO. Děkuji za zajímavé video. Zdraví Jarmila

Hummingbirds are beautiful birds. Unfortunately they do not live in Europe, we can only see them in a few ZOOs. Thank you for the interesting video. Health Jarmila. I left the text translated in the translator, so I do not know if it's right

Thank you for translating. Yes, Europeans miss out on these delightful birds. Of course, we North Americans miss out on most of the hummingbirds in the world, because almost all of them live in the tropics.

I had a hard time last July learning to tell the females apart, but I finally mastered it--as much as a person can anyway--and had fun passing it along. Even if you don't remember it all, watching hummers in January is a treat in itself, right?

Hey Jo, this is one of the guys who's been helping you with your new mic at Micro Center! Your channel is so fun, also now that I'm listening at home the new mic sounds great! Keep it up, I'll be watching all the videos!

Hey, Doug, there you are! You told me you'd write me a comment. I like the comment too. I appreciate the praise--and I especially got a kick out of the comment about the mic because I used my old headset to record this narration. Anyway, you and Jeff are tops. I've been grateful for your help. (And I'm still shaking my head over the memory of you plugging that headset effortlessly into the new laptop when I thought it wouldn't go in. Oh duh. Me and technology of any kind!)

Is it possible to have a female Rufous Hummingbird that doesn't have the splash of color on her neck? I saw a female hummingbird in my garden back in July and it had a white throat but had orange all over its sides (very prominent too). I only get Black-chinned, Rufous and Ruby-throated in my area. Ruby-throated being the most common and Black-chinned being the least. I'm not 100% sure if it's a Rufous but I've never seen a Ruby-throated with orange on its sides.

I’d agree that it can’t be a ruby throated, But other than that, I’m not really the person to ask. I filmed the Rufus when we visited Estes Park six years ago. I don’t see them regularly and don’t know all that much. The only suggestion I can offer is that what you saw might be a juvenile.

Thanks again, Tyrone. I've got a couple more in the pipeline to post within the week. (You'll find, if you keep watching, that my postings are erratic. I might put three up in a week and a half and then fail to post anything for a month. It depends on what I'm finding that I can film.) As for red attracting the hummers, yes indeed, even that ratty old tin can that the cottage owners supplied for feeding them.

Been trying to ID a Selasphorus hummer. I've narrowed it down to a Rufous or Broad-tailed female or maybe a juvenile. Cannot get good views of the tail fully flared, only about 3/4. It does have a few metallic feathers (patch) on the center of its throat. So that would make it a Rufous?

I love these little jewels.I can't move much my husband Steve fixed a feeding station by the window across from my bed. I have 3:05 one Hummer that I named Peeping Tom. He won't let any other Hummers near his feeder. He sits on the feeder and looks in your large window all day long.when we open our window first thing in the morning that's the first thing we see Tom looking back at us.

I am a licensed hummingbird rehabilitator in Califonia. Please consider adding info on your home-made hummingbird feeders. Hummingbird feeders without lids can cause sugar water get in touch with their feathers. I doubt that paint cans are suitable for storing liquid consumed by humans. Thanks a million!

Yes, I'm embarrassed to be showing hummingbirds on this kind of feeder. The cabin we rented had it, and by the time I realized how dangerous it could be for the birds, our vacation was almost over. I did replace the feeder at our cabin with the right sort of thing, but all my footage shows them on the tin cans.

Thank you so much! I especially appreciated the sounds. I live in Estes Park and have had one bird who has been visiting for the last couple of days, and invariably drinks from the opposite side of my feeder, where I can't get a good look at it, but it sounds very different than the other hummingbirds - more of a deep bumblebee sound than the high pitched sound of our resident Broad-tails, so I had been wondering if it might be a Rufous. Sounds exactly like the Male Rufous in your video, so thank you for solving my mystery!
