  • I filmed this back in October and what a great day I had touring the Huntington Library Gardens!
This segment is mostly the Rose Garden.
I have often been told this place was a must for me as a garden lover and I can say they were all correct.
I spent a good portion of the day here and did not even scratch the surface so more trips are on my radar to do in the future.
My video is a bit wobbly and I do apologize. I have just invested in a better gimbal that should be what I need to make smoother videos for you.
I am wanting to do many more public garden tours and share them with everyone. I really enjoy doing that and can't wait to share as I do.
Here is how I organize my garden planning, a Garden Journal: pamgroppe.podi...
*I garden in zone 8 but I face the challenge of being surrounded by evergreens (I live in the mountains) that cast a lot of shade. Plus we get very cool nights even in summer. Many lower zones will actually get blooms long before I do.
*I get my Wave Petunia seeds from Park Seeds, check out the wide variety here: shareasale.com...

The California roses were collected from ghost town graves, and some of the roses came from Josephine Bonaparte's collection.

Also from around Angels Camp, which isn't a ghost town but is an old mining town. The Angels Camp car wash rose was collected by a gentleman who went around Angels Camp, Jamestown and Columbia and collected cuttings and roses from old ones grown by the miners and/or wives they brought with them when they flocked to this region in search of gold. There was a write up about him in the local newspaper, I spotted some of the roses he collected. I wish they would have had the roses from Josephine Bonapartes collection marked, or if they did I missed that.
I need to go back and check it out!

@FlowerPatchFarmhouse She would ask sailors and travelers to bring her roses and add them to her gardens. In this way, she preserved a reference collection of roses, and the Huntington curator was able to bring them here. I heard that much has changed, so hopefully, they kept the historical roses.

@FlowerPatchFarmhouse hi, your rose cutting video of 3years ago pop up on my recommendations the other day. I watched with interest and as I was having to cut down my roses for the winter I thought even though its late I would take some cuttings as I have a couple of gaps where some have died. I selected stems with embryo buds (no leaves) and popped them in a container similar to your husbands coffee cup you used. I was surprise to see a couple of hours after planting the protection cover (sorry I know it’s called something but i don’t know) of the embryo buds had open to reveal the bud beneath. The buds are now starting to grow and are around a 1/4inch long, I know they are growing without roots. Do they do that before using their energy for roots? Never tried rooting roses before all new to me 😂

They can use the stored energy to sprout like that so it is normal. Just let them do their thing, and eventually, they will put down roots. It can take several months for them to do so this time of year so it takes patience but it is always worth a shot.

How lovely, I'm sat here with a cup of coffee thawing out I'm enjoying your beautiful tour in the glorious sunshine so stunning ! I have just come in from planting 600 spring bulbs - I'm trying to beat the cold snap that's due next week here in the UK so doing some last min extra planting from the sales :)

It was 90+ degrees F that day and I was loving it. I had a hard time slowing down so I could video properly, I wanted to rush about and take in all the gardens there. Wow, 600, I thought I had it tough planting out 200. My 13 year old nephew came to help me and it went twice as fast than if I would've done it alone. He was a tremendous help, better yet, he told me he loved to garden and would be my willing helper anytime I needed it. 😀

@@FlowerPatchFarmhouse That sounds ideal a willing enthusiastic helper ! We moved here just a year ago so I've been re doing the beds and borders as you do in a new place - don't think I will plant as many next year but the sales were a big help for the budget - I did get some amazing bargains so had quite a few extras 😁 The rose tour was lovely & I could feel the warmth it's starting to get very chilly here when the sun isn't shining, today it did and it was lovely but it's been grey and cold most of the week here. I bet the Japanese garden was fabulous too I love that style of garden so tranquil & peaceful.
