    England played really well. Sam Kerr’s goal was exceptional but Hemp’s pass to Russo for the third goal was magnificent. C’mon England👍👊👊

      And the manner in which Alessia Russo converted the pass. She made that goal look easy but unfortunately missed what appeared to be an easier chance early on. Toone, Hemp and Russo, a magnificent trio up front for England today.

    I’m Colombian and I am very sad England eliminated us. But the English girls showed nothing but class and empathy towards the teams they eliminated. This team deserves to win. Go England!!

    • @bentorresan9269
      @bentorresan9269 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I didn’t see much class in the last 10 minutes trying to stall the game. That yellow card for bringing a second ball onto the field must of been the refs appreciation for England showing just how damnnn classy they are.

    • @bentorresan9269
      @bentorresan9269 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      And when they beat Nigeria stepping on that girls back and being awarded a second yellow card, your actually right it doesn’t come much more classy then that

      @@bentorresan9269 Give it a rest, the actions of one player don’t define the whole team. The rest of the lionesses always console the opposition at the end, they have shown nothing but grace and class in this tournament. Can you imagine the USA being so gracious in victory? A certain tea drinking gesture springs to mind…
      And as for that yellow card at the end, every team does that. And Australia were still 3-1 down, there was no way they could have scored enough goals to catch up to England in the last what? minute of their stoppage time? No chance.
      Apart from the LJ incident, the Lionesses have been among the cleanest teams in the tournament.

Honestly, they make the men’s team look like a bunch of blokes who’ve never played together! It’s not the individual ability, though there are some top players, it’s the cohesion and shape! Sarina really knows what she is doing - if they win can we have her for the men and get rid of yawngate? I’m deadly serious! I want her to be involved somehow at least...

And there is still so much potential in this wonderful team (just to think that a player of the format of Chloe Kelly spends most of the time on the bench!). And their coach Wiegman does a great job in havin forged a team with a great spirit and so much knowledge of what is tactically the best option.

    Sarina is correct, Spain love playing possession football. In the Euros, they were the team with the 1st highest possession. In most matches they play against basically any other women's side, they will be getting the possession. It's good Sarina sees this and has a plan. The last time England met Spain was in the Quarter-Finals of the Euros against a Spanish side which was even better than it is now. A lot has changed for the Spanish since last Summer so now they have done very well to reach the final (though Japan did recently beat them 4-0 in the World Cup group stage; luckily for Spain, they got through with 6 points due to only having to beat Costa Rica and Zambia to get through, which wasn't a problem for them)
    Spain tends to comfortably achieve possession rates in the 70's or low 80's percentage wise. It's quite common for their possession to hit 75% or even keep going, against a broad range of teams. _However_ England are also a possession oriented team which tend to like to control the football. In the Euros last year, the team with the 2nd highest possession of any team at the tournament, was England (even with the fact Spain was defeated by England 2-1 in that match) Spain's possession dropped to a relatively low 58% (low, for Spain and their possession obsessed style of game management) England has superb possession and game management as well, and they will need to offset the possession tactics of Spain in the upcoming World Cup Final on Sunday.
    Spain have more than enough talent to do a lot with the possession they tend to generate, yet England is an awkward team for Spain to face - technically the favourites going into the Final, higher ranked than Spain. England is ranked 4th according to FIFA and Spain is ranked 6th. Win or lose, this has been a massive success for England. It has been for Spain as well, sure, though the points England will have already gained this tournament, mean that they will definitely be moving up those rankings soon. And the FIFA women's ranking is due for another update since it's last update on the 9th June 2023. A mid-late August update is inevitable after the World Cup, and it will show where the new rankings stand.
    It is quite possible for England to close the gap with the 1st ranked team by a great margin. Sweden having been knocked out late in the competition in the Semi-Finals by Spain previously, still earned enough points this tournament to put a question mark on where exactly the dust shall settle, but let's just say the days of the USA ruling the roost in the rankings are numbered. Having not even advanced beyond the Group Stage, something unheard of for the USWNT, this will hit their margin of lead, though it will likely still be the case that it's still large enough based on historical points to keep them up in 1st. For now (and not for much longer)
    Germany, Sweden and England are right behind the USA in that order, and sooner or later Germany will get back into form. Having also been knocked out, in Germany's case, by Colombia (whom were then in turn, knocked out by England themselves), Germany won't have much to celebrate from this World Cup either, with predictable wins against some teams in the Group Stage, but no major points on the board for going out so early. Which really leaves Sweden and England as the _real-terms_ major beneficiaries of this tournament.. Without doubt, rankings can be misleading.
    Sweden were rather erratic against Spain and struggled to put things together. This ultimately meant the end for their World Cup. Inversely, against Japan, they had previously carried out a textbook performance and dismantled what had until then, a seemingly an unstoppable Japanese side. Japan was being considered one of the teams to beat, and apparently Sweden took that personally.
    It was quite surprising how much Sweden got to Japan and ended their run of victories so straightforwardly. On paper, Sweden should have won. This will of course embolden Spain in the Final, having already beaten a team ranked slightly higher than England. But on balance, rankings at the top end can be superficial and in reality, England has been much better this World Cup. Japan was nothing England couldn't handle this time.
    But then Australia did that back to Sweden. It's been quite the inconsistent world cup for a lot of big teams. Sweden is 3rd ranked in the world, ahead of England in 4th, and France in 5th etc. But of the nominally Top 5 teams in 2023, only England remains. Some may scoff at England having beaten Nigeria (ranked 40th) and Denmark (ranked 13th) Beating China (ranked 14th) 6-1 won't get many plaudits either. All the same, Nigeria did beat Australia 3-2 during the group stage.
    Australia had already done enough to move into the knockout stage but that is the truth, Nigeria beat them. Nigeria, ranked 40th, Australia, ranked 10th in the world. Again, the rankings can be misleading, in a range of ways, especially in terms of current performance standards. Germany and the USA for instance, were both very subpar according to their own expectations and standards. England has been keeping up a great standard albeit with some apparent inconsistency every other match.
    However, I would argue that so-called 'inconsistency' is unfair. They weren't at their best by any means against Nigeria, Denmark or even Haiti. Even so, Haiti is a strong team and Denmark are known for being defensively very stubborn. Denmark was an awkward team to have to run into so early for England, and they are not pushovers in spite of their relatively poor tournament this time around. 13th ranked Denmark is nothing to take lightly.
    Just because Haiti was the lowest ranked team I think to even be at the World Cup, doesn't mean this reflects how they played. They were only narrowly beaten by England and in spite of losing to Denmark and China as well, just saying that casually doesn't indicate just how tough those matches were (well, China did go all out against Haiti, determined to at least end the tournament having beaten Haiti) But Denmark and China were much closer, for obvious reasons.
    England beating those three teams was perhaps expected, but in a World Chip it's not a great plan to be assuming easy wins even against smaller teams. Surprises can happen. England may have slightly underestimated Haiti, giving them a shaky start to their World Cup, but just about everyone else at the World Cup underestimated Haiti. And Nigeria. And Colombia. But here we are. And it was England's luck to basically get all these wildcard teams that were deemed easy by the easily fooled.
    Rankings tell one story, real-terms performances in the here and now, another. And Nigeria deserve a much higher ranking than 40th. Haiti deserve to be ranked higher than 53rd, in spite of having gained little but experience from going to this World Cup. 3 losses in the group stages was a harsh outcome for Haiti, and I felt sorry for them. Denmark only narrowly beat China but was crushed by Australia.
    England will get accused of having an 'easy path' to the final, but this isn't true. The focus should be on real-terms performances from teams, regardless of their nominal rankings. And England's ranking and performance are feathered nicely together, both befitting each other (if not surpassing their ranking) If you think about it, Spain and England have both already exceeded their ranking; England at 4th rank and Spain at 6th rank, where the minimum reward is the Silver aka 2nd place medal, as runners-up, and the only reward higher than that is the 1st place trophy.
    Both are already winners to even be there - and neither have reached the Women's World Cup Final before now. They are both success stories already. The trophy at this point is just the cherry on top. Winning their semi-finals is already a massive achievement for both England and Spain. Perhaps slightly more so Spain, just looking at rankings (but the fact is, England just beat Australia 3-1 _in Australia_ in spite of 75,000 Australians in the stadium and being on the other side of the world from their usual grounds) Quite obviously, both England and Spain completely deserve to be in the Final and are worthy adversaries.
    England _and_ Spain prefer possession football tactics and when they meet, it will come down to individual moments of brilliance, teamwork set pieces and the tactical input of their managers, to decide the tournament's winner. England have what it takes to win this World Cup and reach a new height for the Lionesses, in back-to-back tournaments, just after winning the Women's European Championships/Euros last Summer. I wish them all the very best for this Sunday.
    One more step!

    My immediate thoughts after the game (was rooting hard for England): What does Lauren Hemp put in her breakfast? - Insane how she just keeps on, doesn't let go, runs and runs and runs... Fantastic defense play at times from the English. Mary is solid and so skilled. Toone's goal deliciously smooth. Kerr's goal a wonder to behold. What a little power machine! Hemp's assist something to envy. Moving to see both the joy of the winners and the sorrow of the Matildas. Will be shaking during the final. Come on England!
