Ray Barbie...The smoothest of them all. still love this song, we would listen to this tape, get all amped up and go skate. I wore this tape out too! Before skating was commercialized to the level it is today, you weren't cool for skating. In fact, where I lived being a skater meant that you were weird and unpopular by default. We liked it that way, we had our own style our own lingo and our own kick-ass music! Gone are the days of being underground and liking it.
Lawrence Laudadio Where I'm from we still get gawked at like we're a pile of dogsick by most but skating isn't as popular here anyway. I used to hang around the park with a bunch of other dudes but I quit skating for a while so we broke contact. This sucks because there isn't any other skaters in my town except for a few 11-year-old gremlins, which is cool that these kids are getting into it, but it sucks there isn't any punk skaters anymore.
Skating hasn't left my soul and neither has punk...It made us who we are, ever able to see things without the shiny tags and slick packaging. what it was to us was a feeling, and individualistic. People had a lot of style then because they cared more about standing out than being "top skater" with the most flips or whatever. Commercialism enslaves all individuality. Now competitive skateboarding is no different than football or soccer, a mere sport, and it has lost much of what made it awesome! Someday skateboarding will rise up from the crushing weight of cool, and return to the streets where it belongs. Good luck
Lawrence Laudadio I remember listening to this in 87 or 88 and absolutely loved it and still remember every word to songs cuz I listened to it a billion times.
@@WICPol I agree with what your saying, as a 15 year old skateboarder now that is really into the 70s 80s and 90s skateboarding and punk era I'd give anything to live then except I do find that there are things that I've been teased about skating (for example wearing padding or doing certain lesser known tricks or something) which confuses me how you can be a skateboarder and have no appreciation for where it came from? But it's also kind of exciting not fitting in to what's considered normal and I think even though it isn't the same as it was then that's where the joy is :)
I don't think any modern pro can do Barbee's flatground line starting at 1:40. It's just effortless street sorcery, and it was likely filmed first try. That fakie step-off FS boneless still blows me away.
I love that trick. Flat ground boneless ones have gotten me to be able to do them on a anything if I allow it and seeing him do that fakie when I did blew my mind hahahahah. No one had a clue when I brought it to the park
Never could kick flip worth a shit...But my no complies were always sick....I grew up skating with most these guys and the Tobins crew....If you were there you know
Those guys knew how to make an inspirational video, Ray Barbie, smooth like buttah, I rode his boards for years, even got to meet him once, humble and coo. If there was one song in the world, i would be morally obliged to pick this one. Goddamn, those were the days.
I'm daydreaming for a week now, just reviewed 'public domain' / 'ban this' those videos made me love skateboard...what a brigade and crazy soundtracks. I feel lucky to grow with those videos
I remember when this came out. Still gets me stoked to go skating even if I'm an old ass man now and really just go from point A to point B. Kind of sad that I'll never bust a backside 180 down a seven set or do a big fat melancholy to fakie on a mini ever again. At least I can remember the good old days.
It's taken me 30plus years to find this track, it's been in my head all these years and found it in a spotify skate compilation then searched on here. Watched this so many times over and over back in the late 80s early 90s on the old vhs. Good times!!!
Take it from an 40 year old skater. You DONT worry about what negative things kids say about your skating. If you truly love skating, crap people say will just roll off your back like water on a duck. Go Have Fun. Enjoy your youth!!
I cant get this song out of my head. Neither can I get Ray Barbees epic flatland line out of my head! And I cant seem to get my Ray Barbee board out of the closet either. But watching this, I feel that it might be sooner than I first thought!
Cazzo questo film mi riporta alla fine degli anni 80 quando da ragazzino facevo skateboard e tutto era più bello!!!! "ricordo che ci pompavamo guardando questi video e poi prendevamo i nostri skate e giù in strada a provare i tricks!!!!! Che bei momenti erano quelli!!!! Lo skate é vita!!!!! 🛴
3 flip tricks in the whole segment but who cares! The filming and the music were perfect. I remember watching this with my buddies before we'd go skate to get psyched up. Hot summers, unforgettable times...

Sorry my comment is about 5 years too late, but from what video is the color footage from? I used to looooove watching this video over and over again when I was a kid and started skating. Never get tired of seeing "magic feet" Barbee in this part of the video.
Anybody reading this... For 25+ years I've been looking for a skate song from the same era (late 80's). I was a kid, non English speaker at the time, so please bear with me... Might be a two-vocalist band I think, and pretty sure they're American. The song starts with a slap bass + drum beat kinda like Infectious Grooves is in the house but faster around 140bpm, with the singers shouting a 3-syllable phrase over a few times (sounds like they're saying "post scarface", which obviously they're not). Then it breaks into a heavy guitar riff intro Biohazard Down for life mosh style, though faster too. Then the verse is double time, and lyrics go...."???? it's time that you get it boy ???? won't be enjoyed ??? feel not so great ?? as he just wanna skate". Then chorus speeds up into a fast punk rock/thrash riff where they shout the same thing as in the slap bass intro. Fuck what a great song. And fuck am I aware I'm never gonna find it what that shit description.... Maybe I'll just embarrass myself and post a mock version. That's how bad I wanna find it... It rocked my skater childhood
Mad respect for their skills. But out of curiosity I always wonder how many of 'em eventually suffered serious injuries from doing this. (Looked up McRad on YT because I liked their songs on the compilation album "Get Off My Back, We're Doing It Ourselves".) (Which I bought when it first came out in 1983!)
some tricks were much easier on the old boards, you can't pull off old school tricks as smoothly on new decks. But you can do more on new boards obviously.
necroexmortis Chet Thomas did an impossible on that barge he was riding, go and try it😉. Actually probably the first street impossible caught on video?
Man, I wish skating was this bad ass again. I get made fun of soooo much by skaters my age because I can't do tre flips and kick flips and instead I do berts, boneless's and oldskool bowl skating. It's fuckin annoying, all I hear about is how I'm never gonna get sponsered and when I tell them I don't care I just skate for fun they make fun of me more, It's annoying. I hate my generation.
The only reason I still keep a VCR at home is to play this tape. Best skateboard video moment ever.
I bought a guitar just so I could learn to play this song!!! Childhood... please take me back!
Fuckin wish I was twelve again..... lol
Real talk. The H Street ones were pretty sick too.
H street was good too. Yes take me back, spent summers skating and skating the mini ramp it coping ramps.
You said it. This part BLEW MY MIND in 1988. I was 11 and I started skating about a month later.
