- Imagine that your brain is floating in a tank and being stimulated by a computer to make you perceive an entire world around you. How do you know that this world really exists? Can you really be sure that your brain isn't just floating in a chemical solution?
What is right? What is real? And who am I, after all? Philosophy asks life's big questions. We present these questions as animated thought experiments, and thereby show how fascinating and entertaining it is to ponder life.

This troubled me deeply when I was a teenager. I can use my intuition to deduce that I'm not a brain in a vat. But why can I trust my intuition? It seemed like circular reasoning, and I became terrified that the rational probability of my intuition and sensory information being reliable was therefore 50%. Now I don't think this, I think that raw intuition is infallible. But it terrified me horribly for a while.
Tim Crinion how did you get over it? How did you convince yourself? Did you find evidence against this, if so what?

To be fair, does it really matter? Either your brain is in a vat, or it's in a human body. To you, both scenario's are 'real' anyway. Whether the first or the second is true doesn't really change anything, to you both experiences are 'real'.
In my opinion there is no real meaning to life anyway, we're just here for a good time and then we die. So just try to enjoy the ride.

A lot of this comes down to personal choice.
Some logical arguments cannot be proven. That does not make them real or false.
Amazing video! This theory is further supported by dreams, which also seem "real" to the dreamer.
One note, the video states: "our conscious experience is generated by processes in the brain." This isn't an agreed upon fact. According to the panpsychism theory, consciousness is a fundamental property of the universe. (it only seems that consciousness originates from the brain).

After doing a bit of acid its really hard to think deep enough to have another ‘existential crisis’. I am fully capable of thinking deeply, but no longer have as much emotion behind my thoughts. Not much, emotionally, is scary. I am very sure of myself these days, and as compelling as the thought is, we’re not brains in test tubes. And birds aren’t real.

Can't know for sure! I often wonder if the whole world is just in my head. Lots of stuff supports that idea, really. Like crazy coincidences or superstition.
I know what you mean. I've had some crazy synchronicities happen to me. Brain in a vat is true in some sense. All sensory perception is interpreted in the brain. Even the concept of a brain is just a mental concept.
I wouldn't be so arrogant as to say I am the author of Beethoven's 5th Symphony or the Mona Lisa. These are not manifestations of MY creativity.

@@liberationwasalie2982 Nope. Embodiment is our access to real. "Real" is an interactional hybrid of our subjective engagement with an environment. Our organism happens over time and has evolved as one living process within an evolving environment. Our very concepts are gathered beyond the vat via inter action. No creature even makes sense apart from its environment. Our bodies are not just vessles for the sloshings of a brain, they actually shape our concepts by extending beyond the vat. It is in action itself that the real is established. The something it is to be a bat is embodiment. Our understanding of consciousness, if real, will be a particular understanding in light of embodiment.

Supposing that it is possible for a moment that we have the technology to do such a thing, we would still be able to tell if it’s real because human interactions are complex and we would recognize unexplainable anomalies. It would be like trying to talk with a sophisticated AI, although to be fair I think it is possible that our AI capabilities are getting much better
One thing for sure is whether you are a brain or not, what really matters is whether you are enjoying it or not.

I had a really troubling and detailed dream a couple months back about being forced into a VAT and having to surrender to what I thought was really happening to me till I woke up suddenly, it continues to bother me a lot
Maybe the dream was real, and now you’re just a brain in a jar?
I also think we could live in a very very powerful and complex simulation created in actual reality which would be impossible for us to experience reality because we are just very complex data processed by a seemingly infinite powerful computer. The simulation could be so powerful it even allows the AI consiousness which is what we could be in this simulation to be able to think of such crazy conclusions about reality. It could be so convincing it even simulates death and what we experience after death based on what religion we believe in during life. The creaters of the simulation might even make a robot in the actual world in which our AI or data from this simulation could be transfered to to be able experience the actual reality.
Even if we were brains in a vat on a quantum level, we are all one of the same. Even the mad scientist is a configuration of atoms and energy, and based on the first law of thermodynamics energy cannot be naturally created or destroyed only transferred everything is relative therefore this reality is real to me because it is the reality that I perceive everything from.
Quantum level we are both conscious
Therefore, if I say, Jesus is the truth, I am correct and vice versa. If I say, I am a brain in a jar and the scientist is watching us. He is also correct from his point of view. No matter what we all will die, we will both be the same and return as pure energy.

No it isn't because if animal eats you alive your brain does not exist anymore-so the animal is real, and not some production of of the mind-all of this can be easily tested and disprove brain in a vat hypothesis.

The observer is the consciousness all theories of metaphysics try to define. In this theory, conciseness is in the brain & the brain is suspended in a vat being fed sensory stimuli.

That's not circular reasoning. Define existence; What is existence? If existence is conscious and the ability to be aware then consciousness means you exist. Most people agree that's what existence means.

This is probable and we can’t know anything for certain. But we don’t live that way. We live as though we know things for certain, and we DO know things for certain. I know I’m on my TH-cam app, commenting in the comments of this silly thought experiment video. I am able to justify my certainty because, like all of us, we know that God exists. You see, in order to know anything at all, you would have to know everything because there could be some information that could contradict everything that you think you know. SO, we either have to know everything, or have revelation from the God that does. That’s the Christian worldview. Jesus Christ didn’t just die to save sinners, he died to save reason. If you say you could be wrong about everything you claim to know, could you be wrong about that? It’s absurdity. And that’s your options you have God or absurdity, but people choose absurdity because they love their sin.

Exactly! I hate it so much that people suggest the thought experiment, and yet not provide any conclusion or closure, leaving us to suffer in crippling anxiety.

If you were a brain in a vat you wouldn't have bad things happen to you. Good things happen to some, bad things to others. It doesn't make any sense to have that.
You're assuming that the operator of the signals has ruled out the possibility of bad things happening to you.
