  • A huge thank you to Steven Hinton and the rest of Team Voodoo for allowing me to come into the pit, photograph, and interview during an incredibly busy time for them. Another thank you to Kelly Glenn, RARA, and Media Ops. Congratulations to Jay Consalvi, Tiger Destefani, and Team Strega for their 2017 Reno Gold in a race that will never be forgotten!
    A taste of what's to come on this channel. It's been a long time since I've uploaded; for those of you to whom I've promised I would upload footage from the pylons, the wait is over. The ramp-up to RENO 2018 is in full swing, and I cannot wait to be back out on the Stead infield taking photos and videos yet again. Thanks for sticking with me.
    Fly low. Go Fast. Turn Left.

      @j mcmann: Not true. Mach 1 is 760 m.p.h. the top speed of the P-51D is
      440 m.p.h. with the Rolls Royce built, two speed double supercharged 12 cylinder V 1650-7 Merlin engine which produces 1490 h.p. @ 3,000 r.p.m's (1,720 h.p. with WEP).
      The rear stabilizer is a two piece stabilizer which swivels the elevator toward the aft of stabilizer for climbing, or diving. At supersonic speeds, they have no effect because the air is disturbed at the leading edge of the stabilizer and it moves outward away from the elevator, causing it to become ineffective, which is why so many pilots died during rocket plane testing at Edward's Airforce Base during the early 50's, until Chuck Yeager figured out how to break the speed of sound while traveling upward, instead of straight and level flight. He learned to use the trim tabs somewhat worked to control the planes pitch attitude at Mach 1 speeds. They afterward learned to design the rear stabilizer into a single tail, where the whole stabilizer moves, that way it will be effective through and after Mach 1 speeds. That's why ALL our Mach 1 fighter jets have a solid stabilizer on the tail of the planes.

    The brits know how to make a sweet sounding V12. Those Merlin engines were designed on a drawing board with slide rules and pencils 80 years ago and those old Rolls Royce engineers got everything right. Just shows you what engineers could do when necessity dictated the mother of invention back in the day. That thunderous applause from those Merlin engines is the sound of the engine that helped win WW2 for 2 of the 3 allies the British and Americans. It’s still adored by both countries to this day and rightly so.

    The P51 is an outstanding example of what happens when engineers are given a job and left to get on with it. Ordered by the British Purchasing Commission - who were too far away to interfere - it was rolled out in just over 100 days. And once it got a Merlin engine with Stanley Hooker's supercharger it was game-over for the opposition.

    @ Pylonproductions... You may know this man and his gathering place....
    So Awsome!!.. Me and a group of friends walked into a neat bar about 20 years ago that had a P51 Mustang engine in a glass display center piece , "RollsRoyce , I believe, and Much bigger that I would have imagined" .. surrounded by pool tables. The layout of the place was tall and open.. good size. Above and all around , were quality speakers that were obviously synced perfectly with the Fantastic audio system .... For our Thrilling pleasure ..
    ... ( We 4 , were the only patrons to arrive at that brunch time session , to a brand newly opened business ) ... The owner shared his intriguing plane racing stories .. And THEN.. He played for us , at a Thunderously Sweet Volume , An audio recording from one of these races... the microphones were well placed in each tower along the course that the mustang's ripped past.
    It was Fantastic !!!
    ... I'm shaking with excitement now... It was such a Treat , and a unique idea. I will never forget that place and I only hope that it remains for a return visit. .. Kitsap Co. Washington State. If you find yourself there, it's well worth a visit.. if you're into Good Beer, ricocheting balls off rails and the Ambiance of a High Speed Aerial Prop Race ! 🍻🍻🍻🍻👍🏼

      3-4 gs is correct as no unlimited has hit the 500 mark. In the jets who regularly fly the course over 500 will be in the 5-6G range . When you come around home pylon and the winds are 20=30kts, we will have 550moh times and you might need 6-8 Gs to bend it around pylon 2 and 3.

    Does the modified scoop create drag or speed like the stock one does?

    • @Pylon5Productions
      @Pylon5Productions  ปีที่แล้ว

      The best person to answer this would probably be a crew chief on an airplane like Voodoo or Strega (or Dago Red), but the idea with the modified scoop is to reduce drag when compared with the stock scoop. It doesn't hang quite as low below the fuselage and isn't as wide. I don't know how much thrust the stock scoop "creates" as I don't have a good source, so I'm not sure comparatively what the modified scoop does.

    • @Pylon5Productions
      @Pylon5Productions  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The short answer is yes and no at the same time, and the long answer probably starts with 'it depends.' There are a lot of variables at play.
      For starters, in some classes, the airplanes are regulated to be virtually the same--such as the T-6 class, in which heavy modification is prohibited. In Unlimited racing, in the lower tiers where stockers usually reside, the answer can be yes; a stock Sea Fury will almost always beat out a stock Mustang (especially when most stock Mustangs don't run incredibly high power settings for fear of destroying an otherwise perfectly serviceable engine). But in the regime of the Unlimited Gold racers, it's not always so cut and dry. There are extensive speed mods that go into most of the top contenders, and many times it will come down to which race engine was better prepared, and which will burn down. Sometimes, it can come down to the skill of the pilot. Many different designs have won over the years; there is not really one set airplane that is *always* guaranteed to win, although in recent years, the teams behind Voodoo and Strega have really built the pinnacle of the highly modified Mustang, and it does seem really tough to beat. Just for an example, September Fury (or Race 232) had been capable of speeds over 480 MPH in 2013, some of the highest speeds run by a Sea Fury in Reno's history. That would've been plenty to beat just about every airplane in the lineups of the 1980s and many races since, but the competition in 2013 was just so great that September Fury ran about the third fastest airplane. So to answer your question, it really depends on who shows up, which equipment performs well, and which pilots/crews are willing to risk the most to get the most out of their machines.

    Why has no one made a modern prop plane that can compete with the old ones. Imagine a 25 liter v12 made with modern materials and technology that would be insane it would prorbably be pushing 8 or 9k hp i know it wouldnt increase the top speed but the climb and acceleration would be off the charts including if the airframe was made with modern materials. Simple - it's pointless. Too expensive, too much to loose, too less to gain. Or, as Steve Hinton said: "The P51 is as good as it gets". You can pump up the engines more, you can crank out more HP - no problem. But the weak point is the Prop. How to get the power transformed into speed. That's where it's going to get really expensive...

    Like when did this idea of sub sonic ww2 planes racing began !?
    Obviously modified structurally because at those speeds was when we started to have Afterburning Jets !

    • @slavicco8368
      @slavicco8368 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No... the P51 could withstand that speed without major problems. These are not warbirds, I’d even say these racing aircraft are less structurally strong since most aircraft during ww2 were armored which makes them heavier. And full combat spec, 109s, 51s, Tempests reaches these speeds arguably easier than these racing planes do. You have to consider the parts where new back then and engineers had special ways of tweaking the engine to maximize performance.

      @@Pylon5Productions: Yeah, afterward, I looked up the different models and saw that. I don't understand why they didn't just make it a bubble canopy in the A model on down? It would make better sense being that the pilots could see if an enemy is coming in from behind? I never understood why even the Germans didn't design theirs with bubbles either, 'cause the right conditions, anybody could just sneak up from behind and grease 'em out of the sky. If I designed a fighter, I'd also install a small monitor with a camera pointing aft and lower than the tail wheel to watch for sneakies coming up from lower behind. Maybe even another camera to watch directly under the aircraft, so as to not run into somebody who may be flying directly underneath. I'd also install machine guns in the wings pointing outward down the wing spars to grease the enemy fighters who happened to fly past me on either side. I know they're a bit heavy, but there's ways to compensate for that in making the wings a little thicker for more lift. 😁

    • @Pylon5Productions
      @Pylon5Productions  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't agree with this take. Voodoo was a wreck when it was rebuilt into a racer. If it weren't turned into a racer, it may have been scrapped. Strega was abandoned before being turned into a racer. Many of these racers have more "history" as racers than they do as "warbirds;" most of them were either converted long ago, or were rebuilt from incomplete airframes or crashes. Some were surplus. There are very few, if any, aircraft racing that have been "mutilated" recently, and fewer still that saw any combat action that were then turned into racers. These aircraft are perhaps the *peak* accomplishment of piston-driven technology. The things that these owners, teams, and pilots are doing with this technology are true modern marvels, and we may never see the likes of them again.
      Furthermore, most of these modifications are custom made. The original parts are, in many cases, still out there. Many a racer has returned to stock before, and some continue to undergo this process. It is not like it is something that cannot be undone. In fact, I would rather more warbirds remain as racers than be converted to TF-51s or the likes, because as of now, there are more TF-51s in circulation than were ever produced by NAA. While I disagree with it, it's not my money, and I don't consider it "mutilation."
      Just my 2 cents.

      @@frdml01 I guess we will have to agree to disagree. I think it's amazing the things that people have been able to accomplish with a mixture of both 75-year old technology and modern mechanics and know-how. Of course I love the classic warbirds, but in my opinion, the aviation world needs these racers just as it does the classics.
