2542 is still around in McCombs, Mississippi. She was built or rather rebuilt in 1951, I personally plan to purchase and restore this engine as she'd genuinely be the perfect candidate for it. And a 2-10-0 is a decapod. A 2-10-2 is called a Santa Fe.
Thanks, I did realize my dumb mistake after I uploaded the video, especially thanks to another comment. It’ll be fixed in the remake I have planned, updating this to be edited and narrated a little better.
I grew up in Bardwell and Paducah Kentucky from 84 to 05, Paducah tried to save 2613 but we couldn't raise the money to save her. The price what she would bring as scrap felling sorry after the fact that they scraped her they gave us 1518 with the understanding that the money we had raised trying to save 2613 was to be used for upkeep of 1518.
@@illinoiscentralrailroadfan6015 nice! I’d love to get into the cab of an ICRR steamer in the future myself! I have however been in the cab of an IC SD70
@@rivitedrailfan in 2004 for career day P&L let me into the cab of ICRR SD40A #6017, and the city of Paducah has taken measures to keep people out of 1518 cab now days
@@illinoiscentralrailroadfan6015 that’s not surprising, they probably want to make sure it won’t get vandalized. Lots of railroad places have had those problems. That’s awesome that you got to get into the cab of 6017 though. I got to get in the cab of 1011
What a true shame that Illinois Central 2613 was scrapped along with all the other 2600 class 4-8-2 mountain type locomotives and none were preserved for public display. The IC rr 2600 class 4-8-2 engines were among the largest/ heaviest Mountain type locomotives that were ever built and I wish that at least one example of those locomotives were preserved at some type of museum.
I definitely agree! They’re also the most notable mountains in my opinion. I also wish the world’s only Hudson built for freight service, IC 1, was preserved.
It would be cool to see 2500 run again since it's on display 30 minutes from me but it's not likely to happen. 2739 was a Santa Fe type, though, not a decapod
@@stevew270 gah! How could I make that mistake after even talking about the centrals earlier in the video? Thanks for pointing that out, I’ll have to remake this video sometime soon with the new microphone I got anyways, so I’ll have to keep that in mind for the revamp.
This excursion star really should've been preserved because this is an Illinois central icon, hopefully in the future an organization will be formed to bring back 2613 from the dead aka building it from the ground up like the t1 trust.
Agreed! It would be a good cantidate to be built as there are no running IC steam locomotives at this time. Though I see usually they make new numbers for the built locomotives, ones that weren’t used for that class before. But it’d definitely be nice to have IC steam return to operation in the future. 2613 did deserve better.

Cool to meet another fan of the Illinois Central! A lot of people don’t know how cool this railroad or the power behind it is. I am from the Memphis area, but my family has no big connection to trains other than my Grandpa, who used to work with tankers and grain cars at Cargill.

Yep. Too bad Paducah and the KRM failed at saving it, but I must admit, 1518 is a really nice locomotive as well, and I am glad it was preserved.

Illinois Central 2613 could’ve been displayed at the Illinois Railway Museum.
The IRM didn’t seem very interested in preserving it though.
