A Glimpse at the History of Venetian Masks

- Any visit to Venice is filled with ornately painted masks. These are more than just colorful souvenirs - they come with a story. Throughout the centuries, these masks have always been a big part of Carnevale celebrations, the weeks-long Mardi Gras festivities leading up to Lent - and high-class people have traditionally put them on to hide their faces while they are out and about, doing less-than-respectable things.
Join me now at a mask shop in the heart of Venice for a peek at the history of these masks - from the 17th century, when doctors used them to treat victims of the plague, all the way to the 1970s, when local hippies incorporated them into their wild outfits.

The Carnival is one of my favorite European celebrations (so yes, I watched your recent video on that). I asked my parents for a half mask a few years ago when they went to Venice and they bought me 2! Love the artistry that goes into making them and the history behind it!

I am a collector of masks not really this type more vintage rubber Halloween or monster masks but Venetian masks are so versatile and beautiful

Ugh we were in Italy and we had two days in Venice and we caught Covid and we’re stuck in our hotel room! I’m so sad I missed touring this beautiful city

The venetian mask was explained to me while visiting Venice. I had no clue what it's real purpose was. If I hadn't gone there, I would just associate them with Mardi Gras! You travel, you learn!
Usually what tourists do is walking inside a mask shop without saying hi, touching stuff, taking pictures, and then leave without saying bye.

We went to that shop and bought several hats and masks and a cloak.

This isn’t quite accurate. I have been to this shop many times. The man who makes the masks in that shop is very famous.

And how much of the masks in Venice are made in China?
Made in China all. Real hand made Venitian mask no longer exist.
Most are plastic and not papier maché.
