If you REALLY need a temperature controller to use the smoker correctly, then Myron Mixon should include it with the smoker and adjust the MSRP accordingly. What good is it to offer a product that lacks a piece of kit to allow it to operate optimally - just my 2 cents worth. Thanks for your time
I own this. I’m having trouble getting a good smoke flavor. Instead, I’m getting an off coal flavor. I’m running the Guru pit bull at 230. My applewood chunks seem to burn right up. Today I tried a wet hickory split. Still an off flavor with some smoke flavor. I love how this smoker heats and holds the heat but I can’t get the flavor I’m looking for. Will lump be better? I’m using kingsford blue. I start the fire by lighting half a starter full of coal. Pour it in the chute and fill it up. I preheat it, load meat and throw chunks in. I’m also noticing charcoal dust in the cabinet. I paid a ton of money for this and I’m about to break out my old offset or propane smoker for the next cook. I’m no newbi to smoking meat. If someone has any advise, please help me.
I detail how to start the fire in my review. Fire up a whole chimney of Kingsford Blue Bag. Do not use lump. When the charcoal is ashed over, dump the whole chimney into the charcoal hopper. Add fresh charcoal on top of the lit charcoal. Do not add wood to the charcoal. Close the hopper lid. Place several wood chunks on the ash pan under the charcoal grate. Burning embers from the charcoal fire will drop onto the wood chunks and give you smoke. Mixon's smokers aren't cheap, but they are very well designed and constructed.
Why no lump??? Is the firebox not able to take the heat?? Lump works fine in Stumps all across the land and would CERTAINLY reduce the ash on food issue and probably improve the flavor problem as well. As long as the big chunks are broken bridging shouldn't be an issue. Maybe it's because you're sponsored by Kingsford???

Read my review. It will work without a controller, but life is much easier with one.
My guess is that, with almost a dozen controllers available at a range of prices, MM decided not to pick sides and raise the price.

Jeff Thalrose are you putting the wood in the chute with the charcoal or down in the ash pan?
Jeff are you satisfied with this smoker? I was looking to get a g9. Would you recommend it now with some experience? Thanks
BILL SCHILLECI any response on this? I’m looking at a G9 right now. It’s used and the guy is pricing it like he wants to just dump it.
Could sure use one of those ;-)
