  • DISCLAIMER: I am not a licensed Architect. I am a Designer working in an architectural firm. I am currently taking my license exams but have not passed them so I cannot legally call myself an Architect yet. I use the term "Architect" in these videos to avoid having to explain all of this each time.
Have you ever heard someone talk about an Architect or introduce themself as an Architect and you wondered, "What exactly do they do?". Well, I'm here to show you what a day in the life of an Architect looks like from the view of my computer screen.
So what exactly does an Architect do? We create designs for new and existing construction projects. Architects work closely with a team of Engineers like Structural, Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical to create plans that are then used by a General Contractor to build the project.
Most projects follow a sequence of phases that go like this:
    1. Schematic Design
    2. Design Development
    3. Construction Documents
    4. Construction Administration
Today's episode focuses on a project that is in the Schematic Design phase. I'm drawing a Site Plan to get it ready for review by the local City Planning and Development Department. I'll submit this drawing for approval by the City before going further with the design of the project. For now, I'll show you what I do to create this Site Plan drawing and give some background information before going into detail later.

Interesting to see how extremely different our jobs are, despite being the same. (Architect in Norway)

@@LifeofanArchitect_TylerD I mainly work with bridges and large infrastructure projects like railway stations, and the whole information gathering / context modeling / drawing is more or less automated, but there are several more aspects to the code side of things, where not only planning/arch code but also road safety and a plethora of other regulations come into play. I work for a large multidisciplinary organization.

That sounds a lot like the job of a Civil Engineer here. I don't know many architects that work on those types of projects. I'd love to collaborate and do a video about what it's like as an architect outside of the US if you're interested

@@LifeofanArchitect_TylerD I work alongside the engineers to try and get some aesthetic solutions in place. In 50 years no one will talk about how cheap that bridge was, but it will be there to view! If I ever get into content creation I’ll be in touch:)
