Every day I pray to have the same level of Writing and Narration Mr Minion has, even if just for a fraction, literally anything you say is entretaining and engaging, even from ancient times and every time I hear you again it just gets better.
The entire second half of Ys 8. From switching to the past's point of view to clear paths in the present to getting to see the natural habitat of the primordials and more. It's part of why I consider 8 to be the best Ys game on Switch, though I'd rather not go into detail as much like its sister series, the Trails games, it has a heavy focus on its cast and worldbuilding.
Comedy aside (which is hard, because, as usual, it's tip-of-the-exosphere quality), the Cave of the Past segment was dark and amazing. The way you described it was beyond morbidly compelling. Existence's birthplace, life's prenatal conception, where only power beyond imagination and horror beyond comprehension call home. Where the flesh can barely survive, and the mind can't even understand.
This video is awesome, and if and when he covers top ten knights in video games. Other than gallade and meta knight domineering the list, Logan’s legendary writing as the rebirth of bill the bard himself, when describing chivalry and knights honor, oh man…. Anyone wanna make predictions? Also damn that mystic ruins segment…
If there's one thing I can say, it's thank you for showing me the Jurassic Park Arcade game. That looks so fricking sick! You'd feel like a god, taking out hordes of dinosaurs like that!
Its always fascinates me how meaty your choices are. Each entry is talked about at such length and with wonderful passion. It's awesome! I love this style so much :D
The jokes in this video is enough to make my brain return to monke. I am glad to see Mystic Ruins, Cascade Kingdom, and Terrydactyland be represented in this list of prehistoric places, Cascade and Terrydactyland especially as they are my all-time favorites. I remember seeing the Jurassic Park arcade machines at different places throughout my childhood. The segments regarding Cave of the Past and Moon Mountain Pass are quite thought-provoking. Some other prehistoric levels that I remember are Dino Domain from Diddy Kong Racing and Dino Jungle from Sonic and the Secret Rings.
As someone who grew up loving dinosaurs since babyhood, I salute you for putting this together. Thanks pop culture, for giving me 22 years of prehistoric joy
Another fun and great vid. While I may not agree with the choices (Mystic Ruins doesn’t seem quite prehistoric, and I’m more partial to the 3D version of the Jurassic Park arcade), I love that you even covered the topic. Prehistoric levels and other prehistoric topics in games don’t feel often covered, so I’m very glad to see the love of life before our time.
18:39 I am currently majoring biology in college, and I've learned anything goes when it comes to genetic evolution. Yet, I'm having a hard time believing this alien was what our ancestor was like back then...
Another nice countdown. In regards about Moon Mountain Pass. That was very interesting. You asked questions that I never thought of. Have you ever though of covering lore/theory on Star Fox? Hopefully, one day, Star Fox Adventures could be remastered/remade. Maybe with elements of RareWares' Dinosaur Planet.
Oh my god, I clicked FAST! I saw the dinosaur and then saw the word “prehistoric” and realized Fawful’s Minion’s going to shed light on my favourite place of study EVER! I fucking love palaeontology and prehistory! It’s been my number one fascination ever since I was 3! Sure, it started with dinosaurs since, who doesn’t love dinosaurs. But ever since I was about 10-12, I’ve been utterly fascinated by Earth over billions of years old! From Pre-Cambrian to now, it’s been my number one hobby that isn’t video games. And I am SO HAPPY Fawful’s Minion is shedding light on it!
People forget, that in the things they forget, there may lie the key to their own salvation. Unfortunately, or luckily, prehistory is far too old to be forgotten.
1:03 Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon would probably make for a good BoM video. Also, totally called Cascade Kingdom being on the list! Always loved dinosaurs/prehistoric stuff. So this was a treat! Not sure if this would count, but Makna Forest from Xenoblade Chronicles would be one of my picks for this list. One of the Unique Monsters is called Dieno Sauras. It’s also got breathtaking waterfalls like Cascade Kingdom.
I personally thought of a different area in Xenoblade, one that could be considered as being in-line with the letter of the video, but about as far away from it as possible from the spirit. After all, what's saying that "prehistory" can't mean the time before _their_ world's history?
I always like it when you do get to explore prehistoric places in video game seeing all the dinosaurs, extinct animals, cave people and the jungle sets it really just cool to me good job man
Yoo! Terrydactyl Land makes it to number one! Awesome! The rest of this list was great too (even though there were quite a few games that I hadn't played or heard of before but that doesn't matter). I know that by definition, prehistoric doesn't have to refer to the stone age, but I just love dinosaurs man. Awesome list FM! Looking forward to the next one!
Moon Mountain Pass is just so...profoundly creepy, and I love that Rare knew that considering how often you have to visit this place. Gives you more time to think about the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup of Star Fox levels: "Hey! You got your Metroid in my Star Fox!" XD 65-Million B.C. from Chrono Trigger was just...weird, man...weird & wild, and I love it! Seems Square wants to keep this timeless classic prehistoric, though, considering the last time we ever saw it was on the DS. :/
@@BlazeHeartPanther I was more just mentioning the one particular level; besides, a dash would be implying it played a small part, and that's just not true: this game PROUDLY wears that influence on its sleeves. I would LOVE for Nintendo to do another Adventures-type title for Star Fox; maybe something involving interstellar travel not unlike No Man's Sky? :3
My current favorite prehistoric levels are what one could call "pre-prehistoric", with the aesthetic of modern cities and ancient Greece; Amaurot & Elpis from FFXIV... To keep it short, VERY simple, and spoiler-free, Amaurot & Elpis are locations from the ancient past's "ancient past", inhabited by what were essentially a race of creator-gods, before an unforseen apocalypse wiped them out... Amaurot was the grand capital city of this world (though we only get to explore a small portion of what is essentially a hologram of it)... And Elpis (which we actually do get to go to) was, to put it simply, The Garden of Eden; a "reverse zoo" where they created various lifeforms, giving them names and performing various tests to determine what should and shouldn't be released into the world, many of which being iconic and/or notorious monsters in the present day, anything from Cactuars and kitty cats to Marlboro and Behemoths... Gameplay wise, it's no different than any other area with enemies roaming around, but to simply know these are THE ORIGINALS and origins of most all the beasts we've felled to this point... It's really something... To think that an average Joe created the mighty, muscular, meteor casting, tornado sneezing BEHEMOTH of all things...
I LOVE Jurassic Park Arcade, even if I usually never got pat the Triceratops charge as a kid. I could probably beat it today, but I can only find the modern one from Raw Thrills nowadays.
I swear to god you eat a dictionary, a thesaurus and every other word book before you write any of these scripts. It is my only explanation for how you are so good at this.
Here's a countdown idea: Top Ten Overarching Threats In Video Games. As for rules, most normal antagonists and villains don't really apply. Think of the Flood from Halo or the nanites from The Surge. They have to rise to power during the game. They can't start out on top, they have to claw their way there while you're going about being a goody two-shoes.
The scariest part of the cave of the past to me is the fact it’s heavily implied the giygas was the very first true inhabitant of the earth. Which leaves a question, is giygas’ attack truly an invasion? Or is it just exterminating the roaches that infested it’s house? Kind of reminds me of the silurians from doctor who.
“Prehistoric doesn’t mean dinosaurs.” I thought that just meant Ice Age levels or something-and was sorely disappointed. Not gonna lie, this one was a mixed bag for me. Totally agree with number 1, though.
I'm a little surprised to not see Chrono Trigger, but oh well. Something I thought of when thinking about the idea, what is "prehistory?" The word merely suggests the time before known recorded history, but _whose_ history? In a fantasy world, the land before their world came to be may look very different from the land before ours. In some cases though, it may also look achingly familiar... I will say that this level is in line with the word of the title, but about as far as possible from the spirit.
You won't talk about it, I will. Ahem. My favorite prehistoric level comes from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Turtles in Time known as Prehistoric Turtlesaurus. The level starts off near a lake after Shredhead uses his powers to send you back in time, either from the sewers or from his home sweet Drome. The level then goes into a cave of which the arcade version's lights dim, and once you emerge you come to a volcanic area. Here you see Foot Soldiers hanging around Pterodactyls and riding raptors, that breathe fire and squash you in a stampede. And wait, is that Mt. Shredmore? And like Pokemon Black and White the boss of this level depends on what version you play. the arcade version has you fighting the cement monster Baxter conjured up in Season 2 episode 5 of the classic 80's series who throws globs of himself at you while the SNES version has you fighting Slash. Do you wish to fight a boss you can only damage by hitting him from behind with two turtles, or a less iconic boss you can hit with all of the fab 4? The choice is yours but make it quick, your next stop is the Black Pearl.
Trying a new pace for countdowns with this video, so I trimmed some fat.
