      @@Stickladylove1 not sure which country you are in, but here in the UK I often use my wildflowers book to help identify weeds, especially when they have a flower on to help with the identification. How do you stop the slugs from eating your Hosta. I really struggle.

    • @Adams-Gardening-Guides
      @Adams-Gardening-Guides  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There are a few things I can suggest. Firstly, growing hostas in pots can make it harder for snails and slugs to discover hostas in pots but they will find them. I go out every evening through summer (especially after rain) with a torch and check over my hostas, picking off any pests I find. Try putting a ring of Copper Tape right round teh pot as a barrier, as slugs and snails often won't cross teh copper barrier to reach the leaves. I also stand all my pots in large saucers and keep these topped up with water. The moat can deter pests from crowwing to reach the pot. Hope these tips help.

      @@bewoodford2807 I haven't grown 'Tasmanian Toger' but it looks similar to 'Ascot Rainbow'. I've grown it successfully in pots in a multi-purpose peat-free compost for a few years, but it really hasn't developed and established like ones planted in borders. My instinct is they do not like wet winter soil/compost conditions, so ensure the conditions are free-draining. A warm and sunny position is preferable to cool and shady too.

    Brilliant video. I was given a potted Lilly for Mother’s Day, which has now gone over. Im thinking of putting it in the green house to die down properly, and plant the bulbs next spring ( I’m guessing they are bulbs !) I think it’s Madonna Lilly, but I’m not sure. Do you think that’s the right thing to do, have you any advice ?

    • @Adams-Gardening-Guides
      @Adams-Gardening-Guides  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks Elizabeth. You will need to grow the lily through this summer and continue watering and feeding it to help the bulb build-up and re-stock to ensure it will flower next year. The potted lily should be fine in the garden as it does not require warm greenhouse conditions. After flowering I just move my potted lilies away from the patio display to a position where I can continue watering and feeding them. I let them die down naturally in autumn, leaving the bulbs in their pots through winter. You can then tip the bulbs out and repot at some stage in winter / spring.

    • @Adams-Gardening-Guides
      @Adams-Gardening-Guides  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi Sandra, and I’m delighted you found my video helpful.
      Over the years I’ve tried sowing and growing my tomato seeds/seedlings in a number of ways, and usually sowed them in pots of compost and then pricked out the seedlings (as I showed in part of my video).
      However, a few years ago I tried sowing into these Jiffy 7 Extra Deep Pellets instead, and had great success. The pellets are made of compressed coir fibre and have to be hydrated with water. They soak up a massive quantity of water, expanding and growing taller as they swell. I stand them in a tray and add more water once as it is absorbed until they have soaked up as much as possible. They expand to about 50mm by 95mm tall.
      Then I sow one or two tomato seeds in the top of each, placing them in a heated propagator (or onto a warm windowsill) to germinate.
      I’ve found germination has been excellent, and thin out to just one seedling if more germinate.
      They do NOT need pricking out, and the seedling develops a good strong root system in the pellet. Once a well rooted and strong growing plant has developed I pot up into a large (probably 4in) pot.
      I’m sure you can buy these from several suppliers but I buy mine from Elixir Garden Supplies.
      They have a website: www.elixirgardensupplies.co.uk
      You can choose different quantities depending how many you need, but are probably cheaper the more you buy, and will easily store to use in future years.
      I hope this helps. Good luck, and let me know how you get on.

    I planted my lilies in pots for the first time after watching your video on lilies. Sadly, I sliced one of the sides of a lily bulb accidentally. The stem shoot is broken too. Is that bulb a goner or can I save it?

      Oh such a shame, but accidents happen. Give it the benefit of the doubt and leave it. A new shoot may well grow. Most plants are great survivors!

    8:22 What is that grass on the hosta's right?

      It's a lovely evergreen grass I grow in pots to provide colour and interest through teh year called Carex oshimensis 'Evergold'. There are other varieties suitable for pots too, so do check out Carex varieties and also Acorus 'Ogon' and others. They are evergreen, but after a couple of years the foliage can start looking discoloured so I then cut them right down to their base to remove old leaves. Keep watered and new ones develop.

    Is mushroom compost ok to use?

    • @Adams-Gardening-Guides
      @Adams-Gardening-Guides  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes I have regularly used mushroom compost as a soil improver in the past, especially when I first moved in to my garden and wanted to improve teh heavy clay soil. I dug it in generously and layered it over the surface for the worms to take down.
      However mushroom compost can contain lime (which I think is added during the production process to encourage the fungal mycelium to send up their fruiting bodies ... mushrooms) so I woulc avoid using it as a soil improver where you intend growing plants that require acid soil conditions (camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas, pieris, etc).
      I used to be able to buy bagged mushroom compost devilvered directly to my house from a local mushroom grower, so worth checking if there is one in your area.

      Thanks Andy. I do have an Instagram page (under Adam Pasco (adampascomedia.com) but I haven't really mastered how Instagram works, or whether it's actually worth the time and effort. Do you think it's worth me investigating further?

      @@andyatch33 Many thanks, and I'm enjoying your videos too. I'm still trying to get my head around Instagram and how posts on Instagram link back to views on TH-cam. More research needed!
