The Mazda CX-30 is a small SUV that sells strongly in Australia. It is available in many grades and 3 engines but the G25 Astina AWD is the flagship standard petrol model with 139kW of power (186hp). Sadly the turbocharged CX-30 is not sold here.

In February, I purchased a CX-30 2.5L 191 HP in the United States. This week, I drove it from the Silicon Valley to Mt. Shasta (near the California-Oregon border) for a camping trip. It was a wonderful drive! I drove it over snow, dirt, asphalt and mud. It was responsive and quite amazing. I also got much better gas mileage than advertised too (averaging 36mpg during the trip).
I kept 15 grand in my pocket and got the auto Pure. Perfect for getting to work and back, carrying the shopping and picking up the kids. Super quiet compared to my old 2017 Mazda 3. Enough oomph to not be an issue and just a little higher to step out of for my aging knees. Much better fuel economy too.
Guys, I've rented this Mazda (in 150hp version) last week for 5 days, made roughly 2k kms in it, and I know I'll be buying it soon. In my personal opinion, it drives so smooth, yet extremely pleasant, and interior finishes feel very luxurious for its value. Amazing price to quality. I'm very glad I've had a chance to test it myself, as otherwise it would never catch my interest.

@@kvhkvh6513 Hi, I've used one of the local car rentals in Warsaw, Poland. Something to add is that I think this car makes a lot of sense in its medium / low standard package. When buying with all the additions, 185hp engine, leather interior etc. price goes way up, to the level of I.e. audi q3. However in its more basic configuration it's a really neat car for the same price as new Toyota corolla, but drives way better (my personal opinion).
I test drove this car very recently and I loved it. I got the base model received.
As a cx 30 owner, and I work at a Mazda dealership, the cx 30 is so slept on. Definitely get one!

I have a 2019 manual Astina hatch which I'm extremely happy with and on a current trip from Orange to Sydney it returned a fuel figure of 5.1L/100 and 6.0L/100 on the return. As its 5yr lease expires in Aug 2024 I have considered an Astina CX30 or an Akera turbo CX5. It's a great shame that Mazda Australia doesn't introduce right hand drives on the turbo and offer it here in Oz. Nice to hear you recommending the manual variant but sadly like the recent announcement of no more manual 3's I'd be right that manual CX30 will be dropped as well. Great review Tom
i have a mazda cx-30 model just below the Astina top of the line (g25 touring), and it really is a very luxury car to drive without breaking the bank. my only issue is the scroll wheel can be tedious if you want to use the in-built navigation otherwise the paring for android auto/apple is very easy to connect and doesnt interfere with driving
In Europe the taxes on big engines are quite high, so I went for the FWD Skyactiv G 122 HP Mild-hybrid, with the excellent manual gearbox.
We have 4 versions, I went for the "business" one with all the safety features and head-on display.
I've got G20 Evolve and overall happy with it. I love the exterior, interior is very premium. Few cons are - 1) It is bit thirsty I get ~9L/100 KM combined, given I am very gentle on the car, is not good. 2) If you have to fix a child seat, you'll have very limited room in front, 3) Middle seat is not good for adult.
I bought the GT touring. Leather electric seats. 2.5 AWD. I'm enjoying it.
I am in the US and bought the base model CX-30. A great value for AWD with 191 hp and still with plenty of features and a nice interior.
Interesting to read that, good for you, actually we did the exact same thing , just bought the base S model, got it for $25,000 and it has everything we need, on today’s market that’s a tremendous value for a car of this quality
Hi We love our Mazda CX30 here in the UK we only get the 2 ltr with no turbo OR's is the GT Sport six speed auto it has all the safety kit you need including blind spot, rear cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, head up display and loads more The CX30 is a great drive on the UK roads and eats up the miles on the motorway the Adaptive cruise control means you only use your thumb to drive around town and the car does the rest It is not the fastest car and the rear space is not the best but a young family will have plenty of room to soak up the miles in the rear The addition of a sun roof is brilliant and the infotainment system is so so easy to use while on the move it beats a touch screen every time and you soon get used to it's features We would buy another CX30 without a second thought Looks brilliant Drives brilliant and the quality of the build is the very best in class Bear Hull UK
I have got CX-30 astina AWD in Australia, driving for past 2 years. Have taken it for road trips and drive to work. After doing more than 30000 kms I can definitely recommend this car, it’s really fun to drive.

The braking performance improves significantly if you switch out the OEM Toyo proxes to michelin pilot sport 4s.

Can anyone tell me how it compares to the Mazda 3 as far as interior room goes. I'm gonna have to get to a Mazda dealer when I get the chance and test it.
As always, a good review. It's always good to learn new things. It's interesting that Mazda are dropping manuals. Meaning they will be hard to sell on in the future. It's also interesting that while reviewing this Automatic car, a preference is expressed for manuals
It’s the other way around- most people want an automatic.

Yes, performance and economy from the 2.5 is disappointing. It needs the turbo.
Totally. Had a test drive in one a year ago when shopping for a new car and came away disappointed. The handling was not quite as good as expected and the performance of 2.5 litre motor was lukewarm at best. May well have purchased a turbo version if available. To be fair, many drivers will find the performance acceptable for day to day driving, it just depends on what you like.

Needs 8 speed auto, independent rear suspension and reduce the plastic cladding.
Tom makes me watch the reviews in full even though I’d never consider buying a Mazda or whatever car that doesn’t catch my attention. Best in business!

At any rate, this is the one Mazda whose exterior design I just don’t like. The cladding makes it worse.

A very well done review. Enjoyed it. I test drove this car and filmed it, but it was with a G-engine and manual gearbox. Got my like and those interested can drop by and check it. :)
Any oil consumption issues ? Seriously considering purchasing 2023.
My uncle has one with the petrol engine. The 120 hp version. He covered 22500 km till now. It is a 2021 model, without problems. You can also check my test drive video, just drop by.

I find it funny that this is considered a suv. It’s almost exactly the same size as the Honda civic hatch. Definitely feels more like a sedan/hatch crossover than a suv crossover.

Wish everyone would stop calling these "SUVs"...they're just raised hatchbacks. Their utility is no better than a hatch and off-road use is extremely limited even with AWD.

Agreed, but small hatches aren't fashionable compared to higher riding version of the same thing...
Boot is small (under 300 L) in the Mazda 3 although the CX-30 isn't much better.
@@damo5701 that it is, but on the very rare occasions that we've filled up the tiny hatchback boot, the back seat is usually free.
Plus the sedan has a far larger boot.
As a soon to be G25 CX-30 Owner I can say that is not the case for me ... dodgy legs don't appreciate the lower seating position of the 3.. the CX-30 is a doddle to get in and out of ... Just because I am a grumpy old man doesn't mean I have to miss out on Zoom Zoom ! LOL Even us old farts deserve a little comfort ...😎

I drive one fuel consumption is terrible at 8.9L/100KM.
Tech is basic. Safety features are adequate.
Rented a CX hybrid, nice car but horrible fuel economic
Hate that tiny crooked screen. Looks like it is designed to go up and down but got stuck halfway.
Terribly small glass area for an SUV. Would feel horrible with black claustrophobic upholstery.
Why does mazda insist on that fugly brown leather teim everywhere. More so why do they think people buying the top grade Astina want that brown colour. Its hideous..Just offer it in black trim with optional burgandy seats.
Just goes to show that people don’t look at specs anymore when buying a vehicle. Torsion beam rear suspension reminds me of el-cheapo spec Lada Niva - those vehicles from the Soviet era

The suspension is fine we have had ours for 2 years no problems everything works, except the brakes they are very weak.
All that plastic on the exterior makes it look cheap ☹

Poor infotainment screen placement..too much piano black plastic 😂 and needs panoramic sunroof.
How exactly is it poor? It's in perfect place so you can look at it during driving without taking eyes off the road. It's leagues better placed than the ugly ipad sticking out of the dashboard design that all others (except Crosstrek) are using.
I think the tech for the infotainment in this car is disappointing. Very basic for the price imo.

People nowdays just care about infotainment and tech on cars forgetting that are CARS, and they are meant to be driven not played on.
If you want more tech go buy a Tesla, a no-heart car with shit quality and full of useless tech.
And imho the infotaiment and tech on the mazda is more than enough: Sat Navigation, Head-Up display, wireless Apple car play, Full adas pack with lane centering and distance keeping, blind spot monitor, 360 camera, heated seat, bose sound system and auto adaptive headlights…

I would take basic anytime. As long as it has Carplay/Androidauto, basic is good enough for me. I don’t need 7-8 screens for unnecessary information. Knobs for climate control made it perfect.

I’ll probably ruffle feathers with this but look - Atto 3s and MG ZS EVs are basically the same price and cost way less to run and maintain.
To be clear it’s awesome people have the choice to get what they want, but examples like this boggle me as to why people in cities who would be getting these, do buy brand new petrol still.
I’ll grant there isn’t as much in options, but It’s much more day to day hassle and cost to live with overall with petrol.
Maybe Chasing Cars could do an ep on this kind of topic?
If you don't have access to at-home fast charging (particularly with your own solar), EVs don't yet really make sense. They aren't less hassle unless you are able to charge completely overnight. We plan to go to EVs once we get rooftop solar and at-home charging, but it's not there yet.
Plus, yeah, the lack of choice factor. Atto 3 and ZS aren't exactly going to get the heart pumping.
Not everybody want an EV. That car is for some pure real driving: sport-touring seat position, best manual under 100k, communicative steering wheel, good handling, N/A engine that rev up to 7.000rpm…
Atto 3 is 51k + orc. Fwd cx30 astina 2.5 is about 5k cheaper.
Like others have said, it's not always an option. I have a shared carport with other apartments with no power points at all, so unlikely to be something in my immediate future. Also this is the top of the range spec compared to those evs. Perhaps if you prioritise a more premium feel then those models aren't quite in the same market
Yeah some of you guys make good points about accessibility. I think that even without fast charging at home, for most people it still makes sense. We got an EV in January and it’s halved our fuel costs overnight. We took months to get a proper wall charger and the 10A wall socket was just fine charging overnight to 100% (which is fine with LFP chemistry batteries)
It really only makes sense to me when people are renting in a spot they can’t have a garage or night time charging access. Maybe there should be investment in public slow charging infrastructure like in the UK where people can plug in to posts on the street side?
We got the fast charger later, but it was more a convenience thing because we decided to go permanently EV and just keep the granny charger in the car for going away.
For Enrico, that argument makes less and less sense these days. Petrol cars that will appeal to petrol enthusiasts are getting rarer and rarer, and daily driver cars like this one are pretty boring by comparison to what you could buy 15 years ago.
It costs almost twice as Corolla Cross Hybrid AWD. Corolla costs $30K, 60% only of Mazda CX 30. Better mileage.
Top of range corolla cross and hybrid is 54k.
Top of range petrol fwd is 48K
Cx30 Astina fwd 2.5 $48k
Cx30 astina 2.5 awd $50k
