Tom Wainwright was one of my DJ heros when I was growing up. Parky & Wainwright proper DJ's playing good music for the crowd and not just themselves. No gimmicks needed.
Cracking interview Paul, a few interesting points raised. I'm lucky enough to call Tom a friend and he's a lovely and incredibly humble guy. Not only that he's a seriously underrated DJ, impeccable taste and brilliant technically. Great to see him back out gigging again.
What a very interesting interview. It's great to hear the stories of DJ's whose path with music and the music scene was similar to mine. In the north east of the UK I was into New Wave at school but then became a Break Dancer and started collecting Hip Hop and Electro records in the early-mid 80's. I ended up dancing in a crew and also performed at events and nightclubs as an young teen. I got into soul music and became a massive record collector. I started DJing in 1988 playing soul and funk, but started collecting and playing proto House and 'Modern' soul, like Soul 2 Soul. I then embraced the House/Rave scene, DJ'd now and then but preferred to be on the dance floor. I have many very memorable moments of those early days, going to clubs in Middlesbrough, Sunderland and Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester and being a part of it all. Club Havana and The Arena in Middlesbrough were my favourite places. I still have my decks and records and still love to DJ, it's a passion that has never faded for me in my life! @@PaulBSceneStories Yeah, it sure is a big part of us, especially us music heads. I feel so blessed to have lived the youth culture and music of the 70's, 80's and 90's, that shaped our young lives back then. We just lived it, not realising how much we were shaping history and breaking down barriers in society. My dad was a Teddy Boy and my journey with vinyl and decks started, when I used to secretly browse through his precious record collection as a kid and play them without him knowing, when he went out. And it was only natural, that I became a rebel to the norm's, just like him. Keep doing you thing, keep following your passion's and dig them all.
I could listen to this for another 2 hours. No mention of cowboy builders, the fungeon and marathon running. I always wondered how many promos came through the post!

I remember tom from the hac 88/89 i remember one morning about 7am walking round hulme with him and about 5 others mark and aidy from blackpool was with us i think usual saturday mornings in them days great times 😊
Tom Wainright is a legend, we used to see him each week at the Republic in Sheffield and he would give us mixtapes.
I think one of the first mixtapes I bought was one of Toms . Yeah he’s a legend isn’t he 😎
