    I thought it would be fitting to make a science video, seeing as how I have a scientific background as a chemical engineer. Radioactive chemistry was one of my favorite topics back in university, so I hope to spread the love of science, physics, and chemistry with this video!
    The word "radiation" often will often cause hair to stand on end ever since Oppenheimer and the end of the Cold War, however without it, life as we know it could not exist! While often associated with nuclear weapons and fallout, radiation is much more than the scary disasters we read about in the news. Simply put, radiation is just the transmission of energy through particles or waves through space or material mediums, meaning all the warmth, light, and colors you experience in this beautiful world are a direct result of radiation!
    I hope you enjoy this surface level dive into the topic of radiation, but please, if this topic interests you feel free to peruse a handful of the sources I used below:

    One small oversight, objects don't just give off infrared radiation, they give off all types depending on temperature. This is why a hot piece of metal glows red, the frequency of its radiation comes into the visible spectrum.

    • @frantisekvrana3902
      @frantisekvrana3902 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, it's just that the hotter the object is, the more black body radiation it gives, and the higher frequency is it's peak. But it gives all frequencies lower than the peak and some range higher than the peak.

    As an radiologic technologist, you did a very very good job.
    I mention these things to my patients concerned about radiation.
    1.) The average person gets most of their radiation not from medical imaging but from radon gas seeping through cracks in their basement foundation. On top of this there is background radiation that is just ALWAYS there and I would say there is nothing you could do about THAT, but that's not really true.
    2. When ionizing radiation interacts with atoms in the body the worst thing that can happen, as you discussed, is the damaging of body tissues/ DNA which can cause cancer.
    BUuuut, what happens way way more often is, the radiation splits one of the many water molecules in your body creating free radicals. Unhindered and unopposed the free radical can then go and chemically damage your body which can result in,... ding ding ding, cancer.
    3. There is a chemical solution to this, you may have heard of it before, the enemy of free radicals is ANTIOXIDANTS. So eat lots of berries and fruits and fresh foods with lots of antioxidants, you really can't go overboard. If you have someone living in your basement get it tested for radon gas, that stuff kills thousands of people every year, it's very serious and it's hilarious to xray techs that your everyday Karen is asking for a thyroid shield for her foot xray while ignoring this along with the importance of having a healthy diet.
    And something I never mention that I wish I could.
    The younger a human being is, the more sensitive to radiation they are. So maybe, if you're PREGO, wait a few days with that aching wrist before you go get an xray.. because you know, you want that kid to have all their body parts, RIGHT? RIGHT?
    Another thing, if you have say, a 3 year old that fell and scraped their knee, please do consider the fact that when you get them xrayed you are rolling the dice on them and the xray will only help them if the report comes back positive. Chances are small sure, but they are 10x worse chances than your adult ass. So yeah, try not to give your little one leukemia over the fact that you keep bringing them into urgent care 8 times a year for every bump and bruise. Just be mindful of this, use sound judgement. We can't tell you this stuff because management assumes everyone is as dumb as they are and cannot make a sound decision to save their own life.
    Old people thus, are not very sensitive to radiation. So if in a post apocalyptic world utilize that to your liking.. Hire Sylvester to remove the top layer of soil from your garden, ask Gertrude if she can scavenge supplies for you. Be nice, save a can of mandarin oranges for them.

    • @YCCCm7
      @YCCCm7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Antioxidants are a bit problematic, in that most things advertised as giving antioxidants aren't actually processed in the body how you would expect, and give little, if any actual antioxidant property. However, certain targeted groups of antioxidants (often the ones not advertised on snazzy food claiming to have health benefits) have been shown to have a positive effect. So really, I'd recommend doing homework on which sets of antioxidants have the strongest correlation with cancer reduction before adding a couple glasses of juice to your day, or whatever you end up finding appropriate. I won't claim to have the exact answer, as I'm far from an expert and the field is actively developing still.

    This video got many things correct
    Here are two important things to remember however:
    -There is no safe level of ionizing radiation exposure, but you have to absorb around 500 msv to notice any effect
    -The above being said, there is no single dose that is considered "lethal". 1-2 Sieverts of exposure can develop into Acute Radiation Sickness, but there have been people who have survived up to 4 Sieverts.
    As a general rule, you are FAR more likely to survive 1-2 Sieverts absorbed ACUTELY, while that much absorbed over a year or so has an extremely high chance of developing cancer in humans

    This is perfect timing, I literally learned about radiation 2 weeks ago in my inorganic chemistry class. This is a very accurate video, the only thing I would say is that most radiation isn’t actually that scary, that includes all non ionizing radiation (which is literally harmless and alpha radiation (which is only dangerous if you directly consume it or let the emitting substance sit near your eyes, as this radiation only travels a couple centimeters.) Low level ionizing radiation (which honesty isn’t that bad, but still can cause damage) is a little more dangerous, but not too bad. Beta is a bit more that that, being able to cause some damage, but it is relatively easy to block, and doesn’t travel to far from its source, only a couple feet. The only radiation that is truely scary is gamma, it has infinite range, and goes through a large amount of substance before stopping (about 23 feet of water, which is a good radiation shield) and it can cause things like cancer and it will kill your cells (specifically your quickly growing cells like hair and stomach mucus.) But honestly even this radiation isn’t that terrifying, at least in small amounts. We experience a very large amount of radiation a year, but it doesn’t do much to us, and you have a large amount of room to have increased yearly radiation before you have to worry about side effects (other than a slightly increased chance of cancer with ever increase in radiation, no matter how small). I’m still scared of things like nuclear fuel rods, as those will cause irreversible damage and will kill you in 30 seconds. (Sorry for the essay, but I’m studying to be a chemical engineer and eventually a nuclear energy tech/researcher, so this stuff interests me.)

    I think natural radiation (as in granite) would have been a very interesting part to tell.

    The good news about gammas is that the fact that your body doesn't stop many of them means that most of the gammas pass harmlessly through you. The bad news is that "most" isn't "all."

    I love how the two videos can endlessly loop back on one another. As soon as Tim learns one, he can forget the other, keeping the cycle going. Hope he’s comfy.
