How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a TH-cam channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

So Ryan, the first publicly available gps was the Magellan NAV 1000 released in 1989. Accuracy was 300 meters. After Clinton turned off selective availability in 2000, accuracy was increased to about 20 meters. Now you can nudge your path tedding hay 5”. That is incredible!
The hay videos take me back to my summers as a kid helping my Grandpa bale and stack hay(square bales) and also helping with the cows...man that was hard work!!! Something about watching the tedding videos is relaxing to me, lol.

Tedding is an interesting concept to me. It's funny to see the differences in haymaking from region to region. Wetter areas have to ted hay (sometimes more than once), and sometimes add crop saver. Where we are we just rake and bale it after cutting. Some places don't even rake, they just mow and bale. And then, in the Southwest, it's so dry that they have to steam it as they bale. It's pretty cool to see the full gamut.
A lot of farmers here in WA State just mow it, let it dry, turn it let it dry then bale it
I can see how the Wheelman could be useful during hay season, especially if it is used for more than one task on the same field. In my mind, at the very least, it would make a lot of sense to use it while raking, since following rows isn't as much of an issue in that task. If you had the ability to use it for cutting, tedding, and raking in succession, that would be even better, but since your farms are on contours, that'd be much harder to do than, for instance, someone harvesting a square 160-acre field of alfalfa, for instance. Regarding the crop damage in your field, maybe you need to spend some time in the woods in late November a little closer to that field (just a thought). We have a 13' MoCo and a ~30' tedder. We have found it easier/better for us is to ted at like a 30°-45° angle. It works well for us, but may/may not work for you or other farmers depending on field shapes/sizes/contours. Another great video Ryan!

my field by my house has down corn like that. thought it was part of the high wind damage. I was told that the damage is Raccoons . they took out the middle rows

I haven't seen a watering system. Is that something that only western, states need? In Oregon they mostly have huge pivot systems.

We find that tedding on a little bit of an angle the Tedder works a little better, then your auto steer would work better

Can the Wheelman be used with the discbine? Is there an offset function that would allow that?
I actually used it a month or two ago for that. Works well! I don’t believe it has an offset feature but I got it to work. The problem is the offset varies with the hillsides so they aren’t always equally spaced like I mentioned in this video

Hay Ryan, I don't know if you guys have this planned already but I think you should try the wheelman Pro on the combine this Fall.
Combine guidance is a little different... there's "feelers" under the corn head that keeps the row centered into the snapping plates as it moves through the field, the stalks push the feelers off to one side or the other as they go into the head if the combine is off-center, and so it steers itself the opposite way to compensate and stay on the row. Now with a bean platform yeah something like the wheelman COULD work-- just have to set the header width and an appropriate amount of overlap to compensate for whatever the guidance accuracy is. When you ted the outside round you should leave the outside pass because else the grass goes under the corn

Typically we make what we need and sell leftovers, this year we’re making a bit more hay so we’ll be selling more than usual

You have a major raccoon problem.... everyone blames the deer but the deer knock down very little.. coon pull it down to eat the ear, especially in the silk stage. For deer the ear is at eye level... no need to knock it down to eat it...

Do you find all the broken tines? Found an old tine in my new tractor tire while baling yesterday, just caught the lug.
You can hear them snap, finding them is another story

What happens is that when 1 breaks the next on that same rotor gets overloaded and tends to also break & so it goes on . In heavy conditions a lot of kg ( sorry lbs ) of forage is airborne at any one time . Fair bit of metal now on the field just waiting for a tractor tyre or the chopper . ~~
Doesn't tedding knock the leaves off the alfalfa and lower the protein of the hay?
Most of the crop we’ve got is grass but that is true. If you’re trying to make Dairy quality hay, you probably don’t want to ted but it’s fine for beef.
Depends when you ted it too... In alfalfa basically you wan to ted it as soon as you're done cutting basically... while it's still as green and tender as possible. The longer you wait to ted, the drier the hay is, the more leaves you'll lose. You *might* get away with tedding it the next morning, particularly if the dew is on to "toughen it up" some, but the drier it gets the more you lose, yet. Later! OL J R :)
Ryan, Why don't you use a conditioner on your alfalfa? I have read that this is the best for alfalfa, since the tedder really doesn't extract much water. I used to do hay on a farm as a teenager and we always cut, conditioned and the raked. We were able to safely bale and store the same day as cutting, conditioning.
They have a flail conditioner on their mo-co... roller crusher-crimper type conditioners are actually better for alfalfa so they say (flails can strip more leaves and work better for grass crops) but it works acceptably in alfalfa for what they're doing... rollers are a lot more expensive and WAY more expensive to replace when they're worn out or starting to chunk out... Ryan, do you ever worry about things like broken times getting lost in fields? I'm sure you do because it can show up at the worst time....tires

@@HowFarmsWork And one you can't do much about... it happens... Most folks would be AMAZED at some of the stuff that turns up in fields... A few years back I was chisel plowing for my brother-in-law, and saw a tire going flat and noticed something sticking out. Made it over to the barn right quick so we could pull the tire and turns out it was this long spike-thing with a tapered point, about 6 inches long, with a threaded section next to this big knob-like handle... They were guessing about what it was I knew what it was real quick-- the control needle valve out of an old pot-type blowtorch (the old gasoline type blowtorches they used in the 20's and 30's, back before oxygen-acetylene torches or propane torches came out...) He said there had been a house there at one time and they find all kinds of crap out there... One time I was middlebusting (plowing out beds) cotton stalks one fall down here in TX and suddenly the tractor got pulled around like I'd dropped an anchor off one end of the plow... I raised it up and went back and I had centered an old 4 inch gas pipeline coupler right over the center tip of the middlebuster plow point, and it was wedged on TIGHT... of course being down in the ground suddenly instead of a plow point on that end of the bar pushing through the soil it's a big wad of iron pushing so that's why she made a sudden turn on me. Had to knock the thing off with a hammer and go back to work, no harm done. Had a whole collection of those things (among other stuff) behind the barn in the scrap iron pile that I'd picked up out of the field over the years... Later! OL J R: )
