Before going to the C sharp min7, lead to it with B7flat9 with the flat9 on the bottom string which is a semitone leading-note to the C sharp min7. It works better, sounds lovely and sounds right
I find it easier when I play the E chord to use the pinky and ring for the 4 and 5 string and middle finger on the 3rd string so you can just slide them down to the fourth fret to play the f#7sus and just add the index. Not sure if that’s what Prince did since he’s a freaking Virtuoso! But it forsure helped the speed in transition, hope this helps!
Good lesson, can't be touched after so many years. Though too hard for me. I play it simple intro first this is on ultimate guitar. Then E, Fsharp minor, then A then repeat but end with Aadd9 577600 instead of A chord. Good enough for a mess around. Though original version also has Wendy on guitar. So 2 amazing guitarists one a little weird, very difficult to get it on with one 🎸😅
Thanks for these prince tutorials, and for getting them as accurate as you can. I hope TH-cam leaves them alone. I hope you have time to do "the question of you". I can't find an accurate version of that.
I've been a huge Prince friend for years and some of these cords I just couldn't figure out until now thaaaaaank you so much u are greatly appreciated..
You're killing it with these lessons. I am so grateful you're putting these videos together. You do a great job of playing the songs accurately and explaining them well. I can't wait for me, definitely subscribing!
Let me just say to the people wondering why Prince mostly uses Chords like Maj7,maj9, and 7sus4 and so on. His father was a Jazz pianist and he said so himself, that he got inspired by him early on (6-7 years old i think). That is the great thing about him, many other rock or pop artist dont have the same imagination by a long shot. There is a reason that Herbie Hancock covered Thieves in the temple, and have spoken highly of him. can i ask if this song is suitable for a beginner at guitar? i play piano/keyboard at know alot of music theory.
Hi Thomas. The first time I saw Prince he played some jazz piano in the set. It was clear he had a real mastery of and understanding of music. Miles Davis also spoke highly of high. The song is probably suitable for a beginner who has passed the stage of learning barre chords. :)
Hi Jason I really appreciate your tutorial on This very beautiful prince song which is a great challenge to play and It has been a wonder to us how and what chords and to play, thank God I saw your tutorial, Take care God bless bud
Great job on this one! I've been playing it so basic, but now I see what the true chords are. I got some practicing to do thanks to you! Lol!!! Appreciate this very much! ~Vince
Yep, I kinda based it on a combination of live versions and the original, but looking back I shoulda stuck that F# in on the first chord as it is a lovely chord.
Jason Read - Guitar Lessons it's a lovely chord. Here's what you've helped me achieve today. Again thanks for your video 👍 th-cam.com/video/N_vXeJpuRBQ/w-d-xo.html
To do easier with the Bb6/9. Keep the shape of the F#7 then add the 6/9 with your little finger. Sounds better because you replace the octave by the minor 7th. ;))
hey very very good. But me the first chord instead of doing E-B-E-G#-B-E, I do E-B-F#-G#-B-E. In the E chord I do F# instead of E on the 3 string I think It sound more PRINCE.Thank you very much for your video.
Yeah, if you want to teach the song correctly use the studio version. Tired of people shitting on the chordal detail of Prince's work. It matters. Just like so many butcher the chords to Purple Rain. The most annoying is the plain F Maj chord which is obviously not that straight.
just the fusion of the name note ,and number of the fret. I got a clip in English (I m french from Paris) F scale guitar ; it could give you an idee ...enjoy and thank you again EmaB
Does anyone else think that the chords in this awesome track were just Princes way of not forgeting the roads in the UK in case his satnav ever failed on route to a gig. :-). R.I.P. Sorely missed musical genius.
thanks Jason, great job and greetings from Dublin :) The G#7 has a muted A string, correct? Also, have you transcribed this anywhere, I've a memory like a sieve
Hi Chris, yes the A string is muted. I haven't transcribed this but I did include the chords as text in the video, so if you scribble those down that should plug the holes in your memory :)
Please please please ! Do a tutorial on how to play hide by little May on the guitar for beginners ... it's such a lovely song but I just cant get it right ! Thankyou, Mariah
Great job Jason , thank you so much ! But that ain't so easy when you get to the tricky Bb6/9 in my opinion , for people with small hands like me ( prince used to play this chord with the thumb) , a solution would be the Bb sus 2 ... what d'you think ?
3:50 Is anyone else finding it impossible to fret the low E on the 4th fret AND the 7th fret high E with your pinky?? Prince must have been playing with a smaller guitar in that Webster Hall performance.
Nope - found it here. I stand corrected! He clearly plays the minor 7 and also that 6/9. www.downvids.net/funkartist-musicology-special-acoustic-session--571125.html
Prince tutorials are hard to find, harder to learn and impossible to master. 💜
April 5 today and it is really snowing in south Sweden. I had to look the song up. Beautiful chords. Prince the genius. Thanks for teaching.
Definitely my go-to for learning Prince songs. Other than the man himself.
Thanks Leon :)
I started teaching my 7 year old this song. Thank you so much.
thx 4 really respecting his music... this is the most accurate tutorial i've seen yet on YT... kudos Jason!
Awesome. My favorite Prince song. Very well taught, thank you!
You're welcome :)
Utterly gorgeous piece of music.
Before going to the C sharp min7, lead to it with B7flat9 with the flat9 on the bottom string which is a semitone leading-note to the C sharp min7. It works better, sounds lovely and sounds right
this is great. all the tab on the internet was so off. thank you very much sir!
A very great thanks man. This is my favorite song of Prince and your chords are perfect to my ear.
I find it easier when I play the E chord to use the pinky and ring for the 4 and 5 string and middle finger on the 3rd string so you can just slide them down to the fourth fret to play the f#7sus and just add the index. I suggest starting tutorials with playing at least a good chunk of the song.
Very much agreed, though I do heavily appreciate Jasons work on playing Prince songs.
vecernicek2 I agree open the video playing the song
Maybe a bit of the right hand too.
Most definitely. Find him hard to follow. There are better tutorials out there
Yikea. That B6/9 is a killer!
I know. Good practice though! :)
Thanks for the chords! I believe the original/studio version was recorded in Open D (with Capo 2nd fret) though :)
thanks that helps make sense
Amazing thank you. I've wanted to play this for years. Great tutorial 👍
You're welcome :)
They are right about that E9 starter but still, good work
Yep, I kinda based it on a combination of live versions and the original, but looking back I shoulda stuck that F# in on the first chord as it is a lovely chord.
Jason Read - Guitar Lessons it's a lovely chord. Here's what you've helped me achieve today. Again thanks for your video 👍 th-cam.com/video/N_vXeJpuRBQ/w-d-xo.html
Great tutorial Jason, such a beautiful tune. Thanks!
Thank you! Been frustrated by the online chords I've seen that were clearly wrong and much harder to play. This is great.
Thanks Amie :)

All right, I know at least one of these chords : E major :-)
+Zlap27 :)
great, so great thank you
Great job
I hear the first chord as an Eadd9.
E add 9 first chord.
BTW, thank you for this great tuto!
great lesson, thanks! (whole chorus at 7:38)
hey very very good. But me the first chord instead of doing E-B-E-G#-B-E, I do E-B-F#-G#-B-E. In the E chord I do F# instead of E on the 3 string I think It sound more PRINCE.Thank you very much for your video.
Yes, I agree. I based this on a live version, but the recorded version has that lovely arpeggio with the added F# :)

Thank you 👍🏽
Could you do an acoustic lesson for Love by Prince for beginners. Thank you!😊
WOW THANK YOU SOO MUCH !!!!
Does anyone else think that the chords in this awesome track were just Princes way of not forgeting the roads in the UK in case his satnav ever failed on route to a gig. :-). R.I.P. Sorely missed musical genius.
Gracias !
Thank you
thanks Jason, great job and greetings from Dublin :) The G#7 has a muted A string, correct?

Hi Chris, yes the A string is muted. I haven't transcribed this but I did include the chords as text in the video, so if you scribble those down that should plug the holes in your memory :)
And Dublin is one of my favourite cities :)
*Favorite channel binge watch it... can you please do When Were dancing Prince*
Great job, how about the Sign o the times concert version of Forever in my life, with funky acoustic intro?
+vicarelli Thanks. I'll check it out :)
+Jason Read th-cam.com/video/SIZv67Ey-YU/w-d-xo.html
Thanks dude !
Man I was way off. My version lacked all the color that yours has. Thank you.
Glad to have helped to add some colour :)
Please please please ! Do a tutorial on how to play hide by little May on the guitar for beginners ... it's such a lovely song but I just cant get it right ! Thankyou,
Mariah
Thanks for this! These are some very complex guitar chords. Could you do a ukulele version? Is it even possible?
Rudy Ramirez Jr I'll try and work out a ukulele arrangement:)
Thanks :)
Bravo!!!
Great job Jason , thank you so much ! But that ain't so easy when you get to the tricky Bb6/9 in my opinion , for people with small hands like me ( prince used to play this chord with the thumb) , a solution would be the Bb sus 2 ... what d'you think ?
That should work, you're still getting the Bb tonality with the C adding some colour.
thank you for this , subscribed :)
You're welcome :)
hey whats the last chord he finishes with on the Webster hall version? it's not mentioned here but it's a fine jazz chord I can't seem to break down
Patrick Darcy I'll have a listen over the weekend and see if I can figure it out :)
Try playing 0, 11, 11, 11, 11, 11, 11 (Barre) with an upstroke :) (Emaj7 b5 add9/13)
thanks!
great video i just wish i could see your strumming hand
isn't the a9 u are playing actually an asus2 ?
It is. I'd got into a bad habit of calling it that, but I've stopped after realising people actually watch my videos!
Who knows what's the name of that funky riff after "Proud Mary" ?
What was the strumming pattern?
going to the job !!
Thanks :)
What's the strumming pattern? 💜🎸
Would you be willing to create a tab for this? I would be happy to pay for it.
+Renji Abarai When I get some spare time I will write it out and post it on my website for free :)
thanx !!!
3:50 Is anyone else finding it impossible to fret the low E on the 4th fret AND the 7th fret high E with your pinky?? Prince must have been playing with a smaller guitar in that Webster Hall performance.
Why did you drop the David Lee Roth make-up icon? I feel like I'm one of the few that knew what you were up to!
Just felt like a change. It'll come back :)
wow you are ripping through these lessons, and most importantly your playing the songs accurately. cudos
+funyun000 Thanks. I've been getting so many requests so I'm trying to keep on top of them!
HI @JasonRead thank you this!
Could you please do 'Midnight' and 'Good Goodbye' by Lianne La Havas?
Cheers Man!
Hi Joe. I'll check them out :)
I think he plays a G#7 where you play a G#m7.
Also that voicing of the Bb 6/9 doesn't sound quite right.
Nope - found it here. I stand corrected! He clearly plays the minor 7 and also that 6/9. www.downvids.net/funkartist-musicology-special-acoustic-session--571125.html
Phew :)
