Definitely check out her live performances! Her live vocals are always better than the recordings. I recommend the live clips of My Sea and Eight (ft. Suga) from the Golden Hour concert, the live clip of Love Poem, and Blueming. Her live vocals are where she truly shines! I promise you will fall in love with her even more.

Shh is about mother daughter relationships and how they repeat themselves. IU had 4 generations of women artists on the track: Hyein, who is 15 & from the group Newjeans, sang the second verse, Joe Won Sun, who is in her 50s, sang the 3rd verse, the narration was by Patti Kim, who is in her 80s while IU herself is in her 30s. Genuinely astonishing track.

No word of a lie my jaw literally dropped when I read this. I had no idea. The more I learn about IU and the amount of thoughtfulness and detail she puts into her songs is incredible. I'm literally blown away by her and the legacy she has.

Actually the interpretation can be more free: IU said that the song is about a mother, the first female friend and the first role model (one for each verse). The MV is "confusing" for choice, so everyone can relate with a special woman/person in his/her life, who is "complex" as this song is 😉

As for IU, she's THE idol amongst idols. She's THE idol that other idols will fangirl/fanboy over. Jungkook is infatuated with her. Twice Nayeon is a HUGE fan of IU. Just a small sample of her fandom within the kpop community. And you can see why. Her vocals are like no other.

As a loyal subject of our Queen, you really need to dig more into IU. She has had one of the longest active careers in Kpop, is universally loved and respected by everyone in the industry, is an award-winning actress (You need to check out "Hotel Del Luna" where she's wonderfully selfish and bitchy as a 1400 year old woman cursed to run a halfway-hotel for dead spirits waiting to move on, and "My Mister" where she's a street rat and will absolutely break your heart), and a multi-millionaire who gives huge chunks of her fortune to local charities, schools, and hospitals (and has her lawyers audit the books to make sure the money goes where it's supposed to).
There's simply no one like her either in Kpop or the world for that matter. Long live our Queen...❤

@@Yourstrulyholly Can't recconmend HDL enough. It was my gateway drug into Kdramas, and, no shit, it changed my life. I'm (mostly) a novelist so I'm sensitive to crummy and dull writing and can reel off what's going to happen in most stories just from the set up. HDL threw all that out the window. Here was a sixteen hour, intricately woven story flashing back and forth through time with two main characters, three secondaries, and a slew of ancillary characters each with their own stories that played out following the themes of anger, despair, love, forgiveness, and finally redemption. The show knew when to be funny then shifted effortlessly to heartbreaking. I was unfamiliar with the actors except for IU who I knew by rep but had no experience otherwise and I was enthralled by all of them. IU especially turned out to be a revelation. Her chararcter starts out as a complete bitch whose steely exterior hides a lonely and miserable woman who's given up on ever leaving her centuries-old limbo to one that gradually learns to let go of her past hates. I was doubly stunned when she shifted from fantasy to gritty realism in "My Mister," a grimly despressing story about corporate skullduggery, adultery, lonelyness, and the difficulty of change. After those two, I was not only hooked as a fan, but in awe at just how good Kdrama writing was. Screw western writing - my bar is now to write something as good as those two. (One minor note - the cinematography and music also blew me away. I've yet to see a kdrama that's poorly shot and the music is always a surprise at how good it is.)
So, yeah. What are you waiting for? HDL is up both on Amazon Prime and Netflix
I'll throw in one more I love but doesn't get much recognition and that "Inspector Koo." It's a very strange murder mystery/detective story about a burned -out alcoholic woman detective taking side gigs as an insurance investigator who discovers that a slew of "accidental" deaths are actually murders designed to look like accidents, and that the killer is a clever woman psychopath who Koo inadvertently put on her bloody path. It's very Joker/Batman with the killer both annoyed and excited by the challenge of continuing her deadly ways while outfoxing the detective. If that intrigues you, check it out.

Hi Holly, you are so beautiful! So glad you have found IU! You mentioned how BTS have become the loves of your life... the same thing happen to me with IU, discovered her by complete accident in 2017 on a reality show I somehow started to watch called Hyori's Bed & Breakfast. I liked her even before I heard her sing, then once she sang I was hooked, She's an amazing singer, song writer, hosts her own show and actress. Please discover more of IU! I actually have tickets for her show in LA Aug 2nd after failing many times to get tickets for her Asian concerts. I would go any where to see her... only a 4.5 hr flight for this concert lol

I also love Shopper! Its cheerful and colorful, really satisfying 😍
For Holssi, its fun to watch her recording vids, she showed how she sing the same verse in 4 different tones, and layers it together.
About SHH... its a song about the complicated nature of mother-daughter relationship. Hidden memories, love, hate, longing etc. which is depicted in a poetic mv. Hence the confusing MV storyline and metaphors lmao

I'm OBSESSED with Shopper!! I'm going to check out her recording videos to see how she puts all her harmonies together because it sounds SO good! I keep watching Shh to see if I can figure out what the hidden messages are but I can't wrap my head around it. I'm soo curious about her past work and if it's just as thought out as these ones are. She's a genius!

The guy starring alongside her in Shopper is DPR Ian! He's a korean-australian singer, songwriter, producer, chief director/editor from DPR (his company). You could check out his stuff. He's the one narrating, produced the little song at the intro, directed, edited and colored the MV. He makes all of the videos for DPR and they are amazing even with being basically an independent artist.
For some background in case you do react to him: DPR is actually smaller company, more like an artist collective or crew, founded by a few friends including him that slowly built their name on the market. If you want to know more about his directing/editing style and music his most recent solo MVs are Peanut Butter & Tears, Don't Go Insane, So I Danced and Limbo. I highly recommend the Miito Movie (Seraph + 1Shot + Mood + Ribbon) though since it's a medley of 4 songs around 7 minutes. His music covers a lot of genres, so diverse yet somehow distinctively him.
Funny enough, even with him now being a singer, he was the main rapper of his Kpop group (C-Clown). He said his idol days were like hell because of the abuse and humiliation he had to go through plus how creatively deprived he was (I mean you don't create your song, dance, video, anything). He doesn't regret it though since it's what made him greedy to pursue his vision once he was free besides the people that he met.
The group disbanded in 2015 then he went on to shoot music videos for other artists (like for YG entertainment, the company for Blackpink, Ikon, Winner etc) so he could save money and invest into making DPR what it is now. For many years he was just behind the cameras, shooting videos for DPR's first artist, his best friend, who is now DPR Live. It was only 2020 that Ian released his first MV as a solo artist.
He's very vocal about mental health and a lot of his lyrics and concepts are about his struggles with bipolar disorder and DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) even if he turns it around and most of them are fun takes. He created a whole cinematic universe around it and is such a storyteller as you can see from this MV. His songs and MVs stand out on their own though even if you don't know the backstory.
I'm very proud of all the praise overall for the MV he's receiving and he has come a long way in the 12 years he has been in the industry.. Going from a doomed Kpop group that lasted just 3 years (poor C-Clown...) to working with - the - IU, Korea's sweetheart. He's so multitalented (can even play bass, keyboard and the drums plus he dances). Genuine guy also and really deserves the recognition. I'm glad that IU trusted his work. If you want of course, react to him, It'd be great.

OMG as if he was such a HUGE part of the music video!! Im literally sooo impressed! I could tell he was something more than just a good looking extra. I've rewatched the beginning after reading your comment to hear him! I'm happy as well he was able to be part of this with IU! I'm actually very intrigued by his background. Someone who had a vision as he did really needed to break free from the idol world and especially with his struggles how hes able to put these beautiful music videos together now is incredible! I really am sooo impressed by the Shopper music video. Of course the song is AMAZING as well!

@@Yourstrulyholly He really is soo much more than a good looking extra lol He's literally a one man show. If you decide to check out his music/MVs you won't regret it. Even if it ends up not being your cup of tea everything is so well crafted that you can't help but appreciate all of the work that goes into it. His art is very personal. He has a whole cinematic universe/storyline going on that express his experience with his disorders. Even if you won't catch most of it (if any) at first listen it's still a great show on its own. You can tell that he pours his heart into this and that it's his vision from beginning to end. He wasn't going to be pigeonholed for very long in the idol world. If you decide to react to him I'll be here!

Thanks for your IU reaction. IU whole repertory is huge, she has like every kind of song one can think. She does not compose all of her songs but to my account she has penned 60 of them (out of more than 180, nowadays most are self composed). She has a high but stable an clear tone, she can even combine it with a beautiful nasal tone and she go up and around her vocal range without changing the vowel she's singing. You will find none of those more than 180 songs is average and most are great, even the silly ones are amazing (don't believe me watch this th-cam.com/video/RURa_ct2ezE/w-d-xo.html). As a person she had it tough growing up, and in her 20's when she was already at the top of Korean music and entertainment world over a 2 year period she lost 4 closed ones friends and colleagues. She is however tough as nails and now she seems doing very well emotionally. If you want to know a little of her personal story I would direct you to this th-cam.com/video/8U0f6s5_Ko4/w-d-xo.html there are others and none are perfect but this gives a good picture of her life. About Shh, is the complicated story of IU female friends including her mom and how sometimes you love them but at the same get mad at them. There's a video for the meaning but I enjoy the music, There's not really anything dark behind the song or video just complicated relationships. Thanks again

@@Yourstrulyholly Your welcome, about the little kid at the end of the video, for years now in some of her official channel videos IU publishes missing kids announcements and that idea came from IU and her team it was not the police, or any child care organizations. It's just pure IU and who she really is inside, On her birthday she makes meaningful contributions to worthy causes, last time around (may 16-23) with the message "thank you UAENA" she delivered over 200k USD to Underprivileged children, Single mom/parent, elderly living alone and scholarships. She started this in 2011 and according to various sources over the years she has donated around 3.5 million USD. I know some people may think making the donation list and amounts public is showing off, but in korea if IU does not publish this then people would say maybe she hides the amount because is not that big. In other words if you do it you are a show off, if you don't then maybe you are stingy. Anyway I admire her a lot, and love her like she was my 3rd daughter and she has always been great and respectful to her parents and elders.

If you like the aesthetics of the Shopper MV you should definitely get into DPR Ian (the main guy in the MV). His MVs are straight movies. Mindblowingly talented dude and is the true definition of ARTIST. He directed and produced the MV for Shopper and also did the voiceover in the beginning of the MV. He was a former kpop idol. After his group disbanded, he created DPR (DreamPerfectRegime) which is his own music label/video production company which I THINK he shares with 2 other dudes. If you like the aesthetics to Shopper, then you should get into Limbo, Don't Go Insane, and No Blueberries

or "Hold my hand" live from her Love Poem Concert for something more casual and fun.
