    This game was so hard to comprehend for me
    chess at this level is just too difficult
    Thanks Danny for making these games palatable!

    Indeed a complex game. Caruana is such a great calculator. Thanks for helping us handle the complications Daniel.

    Perfect timing. As a Buffalo Bills fan, I needed a complex mental distraction after last night's game.
    This is the kind of chess game that makes mortals out of every player. Only an engine navigates that minefield accurately. Fascinating strategic decisions and a tactical mess. Thanks for presenting it!

    Really dig such "complete" games, ie complex in every phase. GM King's helpful comments do it justice.
    I predict if that clever blankety-blank Ray Keene selects it, he'll get all precious and compare it to a Shakespeare tragedy's five acts, Exposition, Development, Crisis, Resolution and Outcome. And still shoehorn in his boilerplate antiwokery. (Sigh.)

    Very rich and complex position, funny thing that it arrived from a 'calm' opening

    I’m too old to understand that middlegame but the last 10 moves of the endgame were clear and nice

    "... and here Keymer blundered ..."
    ["I would play BC1, he surely overlooked that"]

    Catching up to Wijk, this game was absolutely sensational. QGD exchange variation often leads to wild positions, in OTB human games at least

    12...a5 seems to be the first deviation from theory but as you say, there are many possibilities. As I recall, the two main recommended plans as white are either the minority attack on the queenside or pushing for f3 and e4. It's funny that Fabi is happy to launch on the queenside himself without fear of being left with a weak pawn but it certainly seems fine. It's really hard to see where Keymer went wrong up to the possible waste of time (as you pointed out) with 13.Nc1 and 15.N1e2

    Keymer held a bit of an advantage at one point and then he tried to keep up more tension, so he refused to exchange pieces. But this only got him in trouble. Didn't heed the old advice to strictly opt for a draw after two losses.

    Mr. King, as always I am indebted to you for these wonderful game replays, which temporarily transport me to a whole different level of chess comprehension than I enjoy in "real life."
    Every so often I see what looks to me like a significant possible line that you don't go into and I ask about it, or I have what feels like a burning question about some move. Pretty much always, it turns out that I'm missing something completely obvious which is probably the case today as well. (and I welcome answers from anyone, thank you!)
    Right about 22:15 in this video, you point out that Rf2 won't work for White because Black replies Rc1 and wins the pinned bishop on the bank rank. But what about Rf3, to answer Rc1 with Re3, or Bd4 with Kg2?
    I do see of course that Black can simply capture White's b pawn but then material is just even and ...?

    • @PowerPlayChess
      @PowerPlayChess  8 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      There were so many more details that I could have included, and the video was already way too long. After 39 Rf3 Rc1 40 Re3 Black wins with 40...Bd4 as the rook runs out of squares on the e-file (the king chases at the other end).

    Great video. At 16:33 white played g3, probably it's really silly; but I just wanted to give the damned thing (=exchange) up with Bd2. F.e.
    Bd2, Bxe1. Rxe1Ra8 (perhaps?) Bxb4 Rxa2 Bc3 (with the idea of a timely d5 to activate the bishop). I think this is difficult (for me) to evaluate; but I would feel white should be able to hold this relatively comfortably, even with the exchange down (for a pawn).
    I've not put this in the computer (don't like relying on engine too much), why is this so bad for white?

    • @robinesperoza
      @robinesperoza 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      looking at it again I think the answer is probably that the move ...g5 destabilises the knight on f4 too much. Anybody any ideas?

  • @Harppaable
    @Harppaable 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

    It is weird, what one suddenly comes upon. I looked briefly at Damiano defense, of all things. I'm not yet switching from almost always french or dutch to the Damiano, but it's weird. I noticed that after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f6 ("What are you, a complete novice; I can just take") 3.Nxe5 Qe7 ("Oh, I'll have to think for 50 minutes.") Qh5+ doesn't work, since after g6 two pieces are attacked, Nxg6 leads to Qxe4+ winning the knight which should be enough to win for black. In the mean time, the knight must move, since it is attacked twice, so no d4 works. I must be missing something, but the concession of hampering knight development doesn't seem too big a deal, after three moves I mean. The queen is not going to stay on e7 forever, so the bishop shouldn't be an issue. If knight to h6 and exchange, well black has two bishops in a semi-open-at-least position for a ruined pawn formation.
    Perhaps Nakamura will end up playing the Damiano in a serious tournament. Perhaps f6 defends the pawn after all!?

    • @djgresearch
      @djgresearch 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      On my database is a 1964 simul game by Bobby Fischer as white where black held him to a draw with this. It went 3.Nxe5 Qe7; 4.Nf3 d5; 5.d3 dxe4; 6.dxe4 Qxe4+; 7.Be2 Bf5; but if instead 3.Bc4 or 3.Nc3, white is better as the pawn on f6 is a big problem.

      The pawns are fixed and the d5 square becomes white's forever. c5 at the right moment will wreck white's center

    nice win by Fabi. Keymer play was very disappointing...Doing Ne2-c1 and back Nc1-e2 for no reason doesn't fit a 2700 rated player....
