Lung’s 🫁 working-
The lungs are vital organs in the respiratory system that facilitate gas exchange, enabling oxygen to enter the bloodstream and carbon dioxide to be expelled. Here’s how they work step by step:
1. Inhalation (Breathing In)
• Diaphragm and Rib Muscles: The diaphragm (a dome-shaped muscle below the lungs) contracts and flattens, while the rib muscles lift the ribcage outward and upward. This increases the chest cavity’s size.
• Air Pressure: As the chest cavity expands, the pressure inside the lungs decreases, creating a vacuum. Air is drawn into the nose or mouth, passing through the trachea (windpipe).
2. Air Passage
• Nasal Cavity: Air enters the nose, where it is filtered, warmed, and moistened.
• Trachea and Bronchi: The air travels down the trachea, which branches into two bronchi, leading to each lung.
• Bronchioles and Alveoli: The bronchi further divide into smaller tubes called bronchioles, ending in tiny air sacs called alveoli.
3. Gas Exchange in Alveoli
• Oxygen Diffusion: The alveoli are surrounded by capillaries (tiny blood vessels). Oxygen from the inhaled air passes through the thin walls of the alveoli and into the blood in the capillaries.
• Carbon Dioxide Removal: Simultaneously, carbon dioxide from the blood diffuses into the alveoli to be expelled during exhalation.
4. Transportation of Oxygen
• The oxygen-rich blood travels from the lungs to the heart via the pulmonary veins. The heart pumps this oxygenated blood to the rest of the body.
5. Exhalation (Breathing Out)
• Diaphragm and Rib Muscles: The diaphragm relaxes and moves upward, while the rib muscles lower the ribcage. This reduces the chest cavity’s size.
• Air Pressure: As the chest cavity becomes smaller, pressure inside the lungs increases, forcing air out of the lungs through the trachea.
6. Continuous Cycle
• This process repeats with every breath, ensuring a constant supply of oxygen to the body and the removal of carbon dioxide.
