The 170's are in my opinion a great all rounder train. You can have them on an intensive all stops suburban Fife service or stick them on an Inverness to Edinburgh or Glasgow service and they do the job- they get people from one place to another in reasonable comfort.
I personally think the 158/159s rule the roost. The transport for Wales sets are excellent in particular. Ok lack of AC an issue and 10 mph too slow, but still probably the best produced imho.
Well made! I love how original and refreshing your style is, especially seeing ss railway history can be a long slog to watch if not done right! Seriously impressed. :)
You're right about the seats! I remember traveling to Inverness on an East Coast HST which I thought was comfortable enough, but the journey home was on a Class 170 and my back definitely appreciated the difference. I hope they don't retrofit ironing boards the way they have with some of the Class 156's.
The best MU in Britain is the 170 used by Scotrail. The luggage rack is in the middle of the car where you can keep an eye on your gear! On all other trains ‘er inside had me down to the vestibule at every stop to see our suitcases were ok! After 141 trains in 3 months, I needed a holiday to get over all that to and fro! Well done Scotrail! S. Island, NZ.
I remember when Turbostars were new and some critics criticised things like build quality (some interior panel gaps and vibrations) as well as window alignment and seat comfort. However, I recall them being nice to ride and prefer them over some newer stuff.
This was a great video! A little confusing with the 171/170/4 madness but otherwise great! Also when you talk about the LM 172s, they replaced mainly 150s, they ran on the snow hill lines before
With East Midlands Railway having most of the Class 170s. I think that they don’t need anymore of the Class 170 Turbostars as they are very reliable trains.
The Turbostar trains are still the best rolling stocks in the UK. And they still are going strong and are so reliable. Such a shame that Bombardier are no longer in the UK but Alstom who took over in 2021 are still to maintain the whole rolling stock.
What about the electric C2C trains class 357’s Electrostar !! London Fenchurch street to Southend and Shoeburyness!! They are very popular like the ones mentioned in this video
The 172s have a performance advantage over the 170s, they have a mechanical automatic gearbox instead of a hydraulic-based transmission. This means that the 172s can accelerate much faster, hence why they're used on more metro-style services
The 178/170/171s are so good that CAF cloned them - twice - for Northern Ireland Railways. The 3000 and 4000 class are verrrry similar to the turbostars
I know the Northern seats are atrocious, but the 19x family is probably in contention with the Turbos for best DMU, especially for the price. It's really best to think of the 19x as a modern Pacer. And very few people would choose a Pacer over a 19x
while waiting for another train ages ago my friend pointed out an Swt 170 saying it's cute and there I became interested in trains.😂😂😂 Also always wish to know where the large headlights came from! Great summary
Best for this Generation! Best of the first Gen DMMUs I'd say was the Class 101 could do any work possible to me I never really saw the DMMUs only DEMUs the Thumpers were to me of the older generation the best (my opinion only)
The Hull Trains 170s, which were in Anglia Railways livery, were also used on Anglia Railways's trains between Norwich and Basingstoke. These went round the North London Line stopping at only a few stations but had to go very slowly because they could not overtake the North London trains that were stopping at all stations. You could get from Norwich to Basingstoke quicker but not so straightforwardly by using the Underground from Liverpool Street to Waterloo.
And TransPennine Express received eight Turbostars from South West Trains, 170301-308 not 9 at the end of 2006 and the start of 2007, as well as 170399 from Central Trains in November 2007, which was renumbered 170309.
Clearly the best DMU in the country is the Class 180 as it is the most reliable and safe units in service. Note: This is obviously a joke. I do think the Turbostars are great but I would say the Class 185s are better. 2nd Note: This is an opinion.
Adtranz got bombardier'd with them stealing everything. Then alstom bombardier'd, bombardier accept alstom is now a boring modern junk company. Unlike bombardier.
0:08 i dont like that man 2:54 WHY ARE THEY ON LEICESTER TO BIRMINGHAM ROUTES THEY DONT HAVE ENOUGH CARS FOR THAT ROUTE THEY ARE WLWAYS OVERCWOWDED AAAAAAAAAGGHGHHHHH
@@bfapple The Class 222 is part of the Bombardier Voyager family[citation needed], so it is very similar to the Class 220 Voyager and Class 221 Super Voyager trains used by CrossCountry and Avanti West Coast. In comparison, the Class 222s have a different interior and also have more components fitted under the floors to free up space within the body. Built for Midland Mainline and Hull Trains, today all are operated by East Midlands Railway and are branded as the Meridians.[8]

The turbostars are fine but I'll take a class 158/159 anyday!
I remember when Turbostars were new and some critics criticised things like build quality (some interior panel gaps and vibrations) as well as window alignment and seat comfort. However, I recall them being nice to ride and prefer them over some newer stuff.
Privatisation was one of the stupidest thing ever after the Beeching Cuts which were utterly ridiculous and just made the situation worse.
This was a great video! A little confusing with the 171/170/4 madness but otherwise great!

Your videos allways make my day thanks a lot for making this like I’ve tried making documentaries but never posted them like it’s not easy
Northern has Turbostar, but i always seen them on the Harrogate Line

Class 170 Turbostars are always my Favourite! I rode them when I was a kid! And I still go on them when I go to Glasgow or Edinburgh!
Some of the 170/5s went to XC after Central Trains was dismantled, before becoming the 170/6s after swapping centre cars with the WMR ones
The class 357 happened to be the only Electrostar that shares the same front
It's funny you mention the Class 222s because they themselves are set to start being replaced next year by the Class 810s.
I used to hate the 170s but now we've got 196s I really miss them 😅
What about the electric C2C trains class 357’s Electrostar !! London Fenchurch street to Southend and Shoeburyness!! They are very popular like the ones mentioned in this video
I don't think Alstom Derby would be building any diesel Aventra trains anytime soon. They haven't built a single DMU since 2011 with the Class 172.
The 172s have a performance advantage over the 170s, they have a mechanical automatic gearbox instead of a hydraulic-based transmission. This means that the 172s can accelerate much faster, hence why they're used on more metro-style services
Man they were my childhood trains that I rode them when I was 8
The 178/170/171s are so good that CAF cloned them - twice - for Northern Ireland Railways. The 3000 and 4000 class are verrrry similar to the turbostars
As someone who lives in Scotland and has grown up with these…
Yes.
Great video, just a heads up: the “/“ in the train numbers e.g. 170/4 is pronounced “stroke” not “dash” on the railway
very interesting vid! You should consider covering the 158 and 159s haha
I’ll make sure of it! Didn’t expect to find you in my comments!
next thing you know they're gonna make a Class 170/9
they actually existed once 💀💀💀
@@willridestrains 💀
They didn't gain the nickname "Turdostar" for nothing though
Many an unhappy hour travelling from Inverness to South Scotland in these machines.

170s are up there for being the UKs best DMUs but it’s 185s for me such a nice ride!

I went on a school trip and I seen a class 170
i go to and from school on a 170
I've never seen one before but I wan to when I go to Leeds I hope to see one but I don't
@woahitsryan4220 lucky
The Hull Trains 170s had a buffet on them

I love the Turbostars Trains so much I wish South West Trains kept thier Turbostars.
The ex-SWT Turbos are now at Chiltern.
Its more convenient for swt to have 158 due to it being mechanically similar and both having gangways
8:00 Im a Mistake
great video btw
Great video but Chiltern railways was owned by John Laing Group before DB bought them and was brought under Arriva

scotrail has first class on their 170s but dont use it, but people still think its in use. means you can get even comfier seats :D
They are declassified on most routes, yes, but when they’re doing I7C runs you have to have a first class ticket!
@ true, its usually fine for me though as im never really north of perth xD
wait, 170 + 158????????????????? (or 159) WTF????????????
Icl the only good DMU is the 155
Nice! Turbostars are very good!
I love every train in the uk!

I hate the turbostars. They are painfully slow, boring, and always packed. BREL and Metro Cammell made some epic DMUs and they get in this!??!?
