Exactly. I’ve even gone one step further with the “suspension” fork. Oh wait..... now they do that as well. Always wondered about the “relaxed” geo and asked what’s the difference ?
I think its so funny how many people ripped hybrids and now have nice cross or gravel bikes they've put flat bars on. My fried did it on his Long Haul Trucker and jokingly said he'd spent $2k to get a fancy 90's mountain bike.
Ahhh... the perfect people for me to ask this question. Whats the diff between gravel and hybrid? Is it just the drop bars? Im getting a bike soon and im kinda confused. I saw a hybrid the other day where u can lock out the suspension to ride on roads and some dont have those. And i always thought it would be harder to turn on a trail using a drop bar than a flat.
@@ryanqz Usually gravel biking is considered more gravel roads than trails, although you can do both, so tight turns aren't really a big concern. Hybrids are generally a bit more upright with flat bars. Most I've seen are more upright than most gravel bikes. I run the WTB Nano as my winter tyres. They run reasonably quickly on road and deal with most conditions off road. This winter in the UK was particularly wet and the Nanos have got me through some sloppy English mud. I’ve run them on two different bikes, an aluminium/carbon fork Boardman ADV 8.9 with Tiagra 10 speed group set. And since January a carbon Orro Terra C. Loving both bikes
A great upgrade for the Poseidon X will be swapping the brakes to TRP HY/RD. I switched mine (from TRP Spyre) and it made a huge difference in braking power. Got the new brakes for approx. 150€ on and sold the old ones for 60€, making this a 90€ (or 100$) upgrade.
Great series. I love giving old bike a new life. I built one out of a TREK 720 hybrid and it was amazing. I ride the DIrty Kanza 50 on it and it was flawless.
I have an aluminum hybrid "dad bike" (Diamondback Edgewood) that I got new for like 300 bucks years ago. The front suspension fork weighs a ton, but the stopping power from the V-brakes is unreal. If my step bro ever gets tired of using it, I'm gonna turn it into a gravel bike like this
I've just recently gotten into road cycling and gravel, but I only owned a hardtail. as a result, I started work on converting my 2011 Giant Sedona hybrid into a gravel/roadie. its a fun project.
If you go on reddit you should check out the xbiking subreddit. Or just search for it on Google if you don't. It's loaded with great builds like that and other old steel mountain bike conversions.
For me I'd love to do some sort of budget gravel build. But the used bike scene near me is just about nothing because of where I live. Plus I really want some disk brakes on my bike. I think I'll be going with the poseidon x soon. Comes with 10 speed microshift and all aluminum drive train I think. Might end up swapping off the sram stuff from my current bike. But who knows. All I know is by the end of it I'll have two good bikes that I'm happy with. And that's what I want.
Ive built up a 2015 norco threshold frame with microshift 1x advent X and a cheap set of wheels. My total built was £200 at the local bike co-op with mostly used parts (drive train was fitted to test but essentially new) and it's working amazingly well. Definitely as good or better than what I'd have got new for anywhere under £1000. Only real upgrade it could use is some hybrid mechanical hydro brakes.
I also have a budget 26 gravel build equipped with logan v brake partnered by sram v brake pads works perfectly on our local trail. You dont need disc brakes specialy when your mostly on a road
‘the thrill of the chase’ Yep, I love disassembling old bikes and seeing how they were designed. Reassembling? Not so. Let’s just say that I have a very large spares box 😉 Great vid, thank you 🙏
That made me laugh cause I recognized myself in that statement. Lots of good frames, lots of parts. But....it makes for some fun experiments in swapping parts. If only I better understood things like those darn pull ratios etc.
I'm building up a gravel bike with front disc and rear V-brake. However I'm using the Kool-Stop salmon pads instead of the stock Pro-Max pads in the rear so (I hope) it doesn't take the black anodizing off my Sun Rhyno Lite rim.
I was going to get a Poseidon x but after watching your videos and a bunch of others, I know I'm a tinkerer and I need to do something because I don't even have a Poseidon x yet and I'm looking for things to upgrade it already. I think you're right about building one and how its specifically yours because you get to choose your own parts and learn from it. Now all I need is to figure out where to start to build one. I rode roadie until cars and accidents happened, I rode trails on a hardtail until I fractured my ribs and bruised my lungs. Now I want to build a gravel/cross bike to just ride to keep up fitness. I just don't really know where to start on how to choose something on budget to build.
Out of curiosity, have you ever considered trying the new trend of flared drop bars? I run 46cm salsa woodchippers (their most aggressive flare) on my cross bike and I love it. I find it easier to ride in drops than on hoods for aggressive terrain
I think such a budget build means a lot of fun. I am building a resto mod gravelbike out of an over 30 years old frame, but it has cantilever sockets, so I can use mini-v-brakes too. I'm very exited how it will ride.
Have you looked into the new WTB Raddler tires? My only concern would be the 42t in the front might now be low enough for where I ride, but otherwise a fun looking build. Related, for $200 more over the Posiden one could get the Salsa Journeyman drop bar or flat bar variant with the 8spd(or was it 9spd) setup in the back. Or for $100 more the Marin Nicasio RC, which is a heavier steel bike & internally geared 8spd model. I think 2019 was the last year for the RC, while they still make the Nicasio.
Great video. I have an old 3x7 flat norco vfr hybrid that is now on drop bars with a 1x10 setup with shimano tiagra sti shifters and rear derailleur. Continental tour ride 700x37.

And I'm not talking about top of the line, but maybe one from 1000$ category vs 20-50$ retro. Of course that retro bike should be in decent driving condition, not too much play on bearings, well oiled, working brakes etc. And you should use same tyres. Then it would be great, if you could turn that old bike to cyclocrosser, changing tyres and putting gear levers to handle bar, maybe even update gear sets from some other cheap used bike. It would be fun to see, how would that work. I'm currently without a bike and money. I have been laid off from work a lot lately, and I'm giving my relatively new bike to my son, so my only options are a) buy very cheap bike, and try to manage with that, or b) buy new bike to my son with some partial payment...and honestly, I don't think this b-option is wise thing to do atm. So I would appreciate a lot if you can make a video about this subject.

Came across this vid as thinking of converting a 2003 Trek 820 to drops and possibly a 1x...vs. getting something new...enjoyed watching, you have a new sub. thoughts on a noob tackling something like this? Maybe I should just get a Poseidon!
you can do it. Just take your time and be patient
@@Spindatt anything i should know about changing the shifters? Have to tell you that SRAM 1x I saw on Posseidon's site is tempting tho!
Looks dope to me
I want to do this now!
great job, love the build.
Anodised rim brake surface = instant fail, everything else is good but not worth the money compared to buying a second hand gravel bike. Actually I would just buy the Poseidon & put TRP HY/RD brakes on it.
I just realized I wasn't subscribe been watching for so long. My bad. Subscribe done. Your videos are Awesome like always
How does this compare to the cheapest fuji jari as a budget gravel build? Anyone?
Looks good
I could have sworn you did a Poseidon build like a year ago and I can’t find the video anywhere.
There’s a few of them!
Is fork from Ali?
No it’s a real Easton fork
Noooooo not my High Rollers 😥
I would definitely ride the Norco over the Poseidon
#1 tire for the Tour Divide, not the TCR ;)
That’s the one!
So are you going to build a old 26 inch gravel bike now?
I pretty much did a drop bar conversion on an old 26er mtb. Might do another drop bar conversion on a hybrid...lol
I like slicks.
Still would have gone for a Poseidon.
Lol I almost brought you up in this video because I knew you would say that haha! Like you said before, it was a fun build, it’s just more reasonable to get the Poseidon
Should’ve told him he should’ve looked at it.
i like how you build from a crap bike into a semi crap bike
hahaha that's put exactly the way i was hoping someone would
better buy poseidon and put those 200$ into upgrading
Hi, I wish I could have a bike like yours. Im searching a budget gravel bike here in the Philippines but I can't find anything they are to expensive. When i always watch your vlig specially this one about budget gravel bike. I hope that I can have that one this coming New Year 2021 so that I can do exercise and i can used it for my traveling.
The guy put Sram equipment and he's talking about budget😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I've tried to upgrade my bike with only Sram Apex 1 and couldn't caus it was as expensive as I could get another gravel ready to run
👌
Just look at it.
Hey man, you need an adapter to make the v-brakes work well. I did a shot video on this solution: th-cam.com/video/YnMrDh2giCY/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=MaciejZieli%C5%84ski
$211.98 should have been your total budget. Sorry but this is not a budget build. I was really hoping to find some used parts to upgrade shifters, derailers, and/or cranksets.
YUHHHHHHH
