    Bill knew how to survive but frank showed him how to live. The biggest divergence of the game but they made the change for the better. It made Bill into and inspiration to Joel instead of his shadowy hateful self in the game. You may lose when you love hut you stand to gain much more if you do. This was terribly beautiful

    From Buzzfeed "When you pause, you can see that Bill wrote, "I recommend pairing" and then the last word appears to be a type of wine - Brunello perhaps?" "In Episode 3, Bill and Frank's love story kicks off when Bill invites Frank into his home for a meal, where Frank is impressed that Bill knew to pair rabbit with a Beaujolais red wine." "Then, for their final meal together, Bill re-creates the first meal they ever shared: rabbit with the Beaujolais red wine." "I find it absolutely adorable that Bill's final words to Joel were him recommending a wine pairing for Joel and Tess, in the hope that they find the same love he shared with Frank. Bill just didn't want Joel to be alone."

    Frank and Bill met in 2007, four years into the event. They met Tess and Joel in 2010, three years later, but were together a total of sixteen years.

    I don't think Frank was "giving up" - instead, he simply knew that his medical condition (probably cancer or MS) was only going to get worse from here on out, and so he decided he'd rather end things now, on his own terms, while he was still healthy and awake enough to enjoy his final time with Bill. As far as the world they live in goes, that's pretty damn close to a "happy ending." :)

      @@robjamysan718 don't be silly. Many people have to decide what to do when they have a terminal illness. When to end it. Frank wasn't going to not tell Bill and leave him without Bill having a chance to say goodbye.

    • @dlweiss
      @dlweiss ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@robjamysan718 GodDAMN that's a pitch-dark (and factually inaccurate) reading of this story. Frank gave Bill a TON of good things that Bill otherwise wouldn't have had in his life: the simple but powerful joys from stuff like eating strawberries, the humor and playfulness that Bill had never let himself really explore before, the sense of purpose, companionship, and fulfillment that they shared.
      And to be clear, I'm not saying Frank was perfect: he definitely tried Bill's patience and sometimes was demanding. But that's literally the point of their story: true love doesn't mean "everything is always perfect and neither person has flaws or quirks." It means "the good things we gain from being together FAR out-weigh any bad things that come with it."

    • @jaydemetrick8399
      @jaydemetrick8399 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@robjamysan718 Wow, that's a bizarre reading... Frank was probably a triage nurse in his past life, as he knew how to deal with Bill's gunshot (and saved his life), and also realized his own degenerative neuro-muscular condition would only get worse and become even more of a burden for Bill to deal with (on top of Bill's own aging and all the dangers of their world). Frank is shown as a creative and open and caring person. He had the empathy to understand Bill and help Bill uncover needs and desires outside of the most basic survival ones, ones that Bill had kept hidden and suppressed for most of his life. Frank showed Bill how to truly live and not just survive. He saw how much Bill enjoyed and cared about food and managed to get him strawberries in the middle of an apocalypse, of all things. Most of his paintings were of Bill, showing how much he loved him. Go back and watch the episode again with an attention for detail. You'll see the love.

    @major yes they just met, but Bill was giving signs. “I don’t seem like the type.” “no you do.” Frank has gay-dar. Also… it’s been 4 years and it’s likely that they haven’t felt a human “touch,” so there’s no time to waste.
    Frank has either ALS or Parkinson’s. He may have more days left, but he’s suffering. He’s in pain, and he wants to go out with dignity. He’s not giving up. He’s trying to stop Bill from suffering with him. It’s heartbreaking, but understandable.
    It’s a beautiful love story.

    Frank has a degenerative condition and there is no medical system to help mediate his declining health.
    On top of that they ARE living in a zombie apocalypse so not only does he not control how he goes without choosing a day to do it but statistically his last day could involve a raider or mushroom getting over the aging fence while he’s trapped in an immobile body.
    I would imagine he wouldn’t want to be a survival burden and risk to his husband.
    When you can chose to go out peacefully in love instead of screaming in fear - is it even a question?

    The episode is about the main theme of The Last of Us. Surviving vs Living. Bill taught Frank how to survive, and Frank taught Bill how to live.
    That argument in the street is where the game Bill and the show Bill's timeline diverge.
    In the show Bill compromised a bit, and let Frank love him how he wanted to love him. Let him make a friend, Tess and Joel. Spruce up the neighborhood. Frank in turn compromised and settled for just that. It’s still an apocalypse, he can’t invite too many people or do too much. So they both died satisfied, in each other’s arms, after a full life.
    In either case their plot purpose is to teach Joel that surviving isn’t enough. In the show Bill shows Joel how good it can be if he opens up.
    Bill lets the "danger" song play so that Joel and Tess would come, and get all the weapons and things they needed to have a happy ending like he did. If you read the rest of the letter Bill tells Joel which wine to use in order for Joel to woo Tess and start doing more than just surviving. But it's too late for Tess. Joel reads the letter and realizes that Frank died happy. And Tess died never having that chance. He looks at the key in his hand, and he could part ways with Ellie, but now Tess told him to save who he could save. Bill told him to protect others are what they're for. And he decides to open up a bit, the first time since the time stuck on his broken watch.
    You'll see a lot of people saying this is totally different than the game, but not really. Since you don't want game spoilers, I won't go into details. There you can see what would've happened had that argument gone differently. Just one small choice can have a big impact. Play the game to see how much that choice can change!

    So, a "cure" would probably only work for the very recently infected. I think once it gets to the brain if's too late.
    I think Frank had ALS. He had already lost use of his legs and was losing the use of his arms. If it was ALS he didn't have long to live.
    I don't know about you Major, but when I saw Frank chug the wine I immediately thought of the Queen of Thorns, bless her heart.

      The brain, strangely enough is one of the only things that this type of Cordyceps doesn't touch at all. The fungus invades muscle tissue and most non-vital system, leaving the brain and main organs mostly untouched. It does flood the brain with chemical hallucinogens, but mostly it manually controls it's host and replaces muscle and other tissues with fungus fibers to manually control its host, while the victim remains trapped inside it's own mind unable to exert control over the fungus. Eventually the fungus parks the victim in a spot that allows it to spread it's spores to passerbys, while it sits and becomes fully devoured from the inside out.

    Titantic/Notebook emotions within 45-50 of one episode. That's amazing writing, directing and acting to pull off. For people that say that this doesn't follow the game, alright it's the biggest deviation so far. But the MAIN reason so many of us fell in love with The Last Of Us is because of the emotional attachment to the characters. Not bc of the apocalypse, gameplay or "zombies". It dug into us waayy deeper than that. So far in this series every episode has felt like a movie of it's own. Growing close to and losing characters whose stories you've fell in love with. Bravo Neil and Craig 👏

      Came for Pedro & Bella stayed because this episode especially blew me away.

      @@theConquerersMama being a die hard and probably life long fan of the game, I've watched the series with a very open mind and tried to appreciate it as it's own show. With it just being a show and me hypothetically not knowing the game, I think I'd still be blown away by the show. I'm further invested because it's my favorite story of all stories, but it's a heck of a story in any median. I'm loving Pedro as Joel and Bella as Ellie. Again, a little different than the game but the acting, writing and directing is killing it.

I stopped watching TV in 1984 and I heard about this episode last year, but had no way to watch it at the time. I finally was able to watch it a few weeks ago and it haunts me still. The story is very close to home for me and perhaps like you, I'm not much of a crier, but I cried quarts watching this. In "Long, Long Time," Linda Ronstadt sings of "blinking back the tears," but that didn't stop me. I never thought a TV program could make me feel this way. Take care, Major.

    Well worth the wait. What an incredible reaction. It is a pleasure to watch your channel, because you always let the story unfold for you, and you don't want to rush anything. You're open, and you connect with your viewers. Great job.
    Just to clear some things up, I think Frank had an illness at the end, not just old age. Maybe cancer or a neuromuscular disease like ALS or MS. Definitely no way to cure, especially in their world, and progressively more painful.
    The events around Bill in the game are different from the story told on the TV show. I won't go into spoilers for the game, but I think even though the circumstances around both versions of Bill are different, Bill's story in both the game and the show work as a powerful reflection on Joel.
    On the show, we just watched Bill go from being a man who wanted to close himself off from the world, and who literally said that he was happy when the world ended and everybody died. But then he said he was wrong. He was wrong because he found the one other person who made the world worthwhile.
    Joel's at a cross-roads. The man has suffered loss beyond what most people can even imagine. It will be very interesting to watch which path he chooses.

    @Major Reacts,
    Family first, man. I doubt any here will fault you for that =]
    1:02 I recommend watching the first five minutes of episode one ONE MORE TIME. The epidemiologist sets up what's going to happen 35 years later in 2003. Remember the show starts in 1968 with two epidemiologist talking about their fears for the future. The rather tall epidemiologist fears stronger viruses, while the one that left the audience and host speechless scared the $#!+ out of everyone present with his predictions of cordyceps and other forms of fungus evolving because of global warming, and them doing to us what they currently do to ants and other insects--that's what they're doing in the Last of Us, turning humans (the infected) into vessels to help them spread and populate the world.
    The cordyceps do not kill their host and the infected do not eat the people they bite. Cordyceps wall of the brain, trapping the infected in their minds while hijacking their bodies. The attack on the immune system and nervous system is likely while the symptoms for infection are mood swings, coughing and muscle spasms. Muscle spasms are likely of imminent total infection as the infected loss of motor skills and coordination is very likely the result of cordyceps finalizing the barrier around the brain from the nervous system, shutting the host out forever. The host doesn't die but becomes a prisoner in their own body force to see and hear the horrors committed in their bodies until someone kills them or the cordyceps fully drain the host body of its fluids, at which point the host finally dies. Infected bite people to inseminate them with cordyceps, populating the world with more of their kind.
    Yeah, so not a virus, but fungus hijacking the human body, which they will, over time, grow over, replacing their host with themselves.
    2:53 Yeah, not zombies. Zombies are typically defined as reanimated dead people. Infected aren't dead, but prisoners in their own bodies...which is why no one on this show calls them zombies either. You'll also notice that when an infected is killed, the body stops moving, trapping the cordyceps in a immobile prison. Killing the host won't kill the cordyceps as the cordyceps don't feel the pain inflicted on the host's body--neither does the host, since their brain is disconnected from their body. This is why they can only be killed by a shot to the head, as that's the only way to kill the host since that's the only thing that's them left--this is the games logic, which the show hasn't strayed from yet. You'd think sever chest trauma would do the same thing as a bullet to the brain, given the fact that the brain can't function without the heart.
    3:28 You really need to watch the first 5 minutes of the first episode again--there is no cure for infection. Once the Cordyceps hijack your body, you're done. Even if there was a cure, Those beyond Runners would likely want to take their lives, given that there would be no way to return the parts of their body taken over by fungal growth. Runners would have that webbed vine scarring on their bodies like Ellie does on her arm, but it would be all over their faces and body, a constant reminder of what was. They'd also have to live with the memories, I think we'd see a lot of them end up ending their lives with the horrors they were forced to inflict. Those that were Clickers would be blind and deaf for ever since they no longer have an upper face. So yeah, there's no cure for the infected...or at least anyone beyond the runner phase, and this is assuming that in the future that they could cure this. The best they could possibly do is make people not infected like Ellie, immune.
    14:32 Well, when that FEDRA soldier threatened to shot Ellie, Joel saw himself with Sarah--Joel didn't leap to save Sarah's life (he didn't know that he was going to get shot at), but he sure did for Ellie. Ellie is the same age Sarah was when Sarah died. Ellie is also smart and quick witted like Sarah, so yeah, I think he see's Sarah in her, which explains why he doesn't want this job. He spent 20 years cutting himself off from connection, and now he's forced to be around a teenager that reminds him constantly of his daughter. Ouch!
    28:09 That Bill is! The only thing Bill couldn't do was live. Bill is a man in his 50s who wasn't accepted in society, so he had to learn how to survive in it. He never got to live...until this moment. And that's because of Bill, a man who didn't know how to survive, lol. They were made for each other, as this story will show.
    28:34 They might have just met, but watch that whole sequence again. Bill was totally courting Frank! He could have just given Frank a sandwich, but Bill couldn't do that. Bill broke out the fine china and silverware and cooked Frank a 3 star Michelin meal and served him his finest wine--you noticed Bill brush his hair to the side, lol, and so did Frank. And let's not forget that Bill let this man shower, and he gave the man brand new clothes too! WHO DOES THAT?! A lonely person seeking companionship is who! Bill might not have known he was gay or didn't want to admit it because of the generation he was from, but he knew women weren't for him. Frank let Bill be Bill, and Bill for the first time in his life started living!
    30:42 FEDRA is doing some Nazi type $#!+ man. That mass grave wasn't a gas shower, but that mass grave were people from Bill's town. FEDRA was supposed to be taking them to safe place, but they instead rounded up those folks and killed them because dead people can't be infected. FEDRA hangs people who leave the QZ. FEDRA's an oppressive regime that removed the bureaucrats and took over hours after the world started falling apart. What FEDRA says go, and anyone who disagrees with that is done...the Fireflies are probably starting to make sense now, right?
    39:47 The actors are in their 50s and they aged them up for this scene here, so I'd say they are in their 70s here. Frank, unfortunately is suffering from either MS or ASL, according to Craig Mazin (the co-creator for this HBO series) ='(
    40:16 Look at Bill! He has learned to care for his yard and garden! Remember he didn't care about that stuff early on (he didn't care for dusting his home either), but Frank had to teach him to care about these things, as surviving isn't living. You aren't there yet, but Bill tells Joel how he felt about the world, it wasn't great, but those feelings changed because of one person. that one person that accepted him for who he was and showed him how to live.
    This was a great episode. This part of the story is quite different from the game, but in a much, much better way. The Bill and Frank's story in the game in tragic and very sad--we don't get to see it, but read about it in letters. Bill's letter to Joel is likely a nod to that. In the game, we only meet Bill and he's bitter and angry. Ellie and Joel find Frank's body...hanging from a tree...he hung himself after getting bit by an infected while trying to leaving a toxic relationship. The player is given the choice of deliver Franks' final letter to Bill, and that Franks parting words weren't nice. This story allows both men to have a happily ever after story. They lived a life in a bubble, frozen in the year 2003 because Bill was that guy no one f'ed with. Unlike the rest of the world that never knew where they were going to be sleeping the next night or if they'd have enough food, Bill and Frank knew exactly where they'd be for 16 years and had everything they needed and more. They lived a beautiful life free from judgement, something they wouldn't have been without before the outbreak. This is probably the only happy story we'll get out of this series, so we'll have to take what we can get.

      Factors that made Bill into the man we first meet: If he's around 50 in 2003 that means he was born in the early 1950s under McCarthyism & the "Lavender Scare". He could have heard about the Stonewall riots in 1969 as a teen on the news and heard the negative reactions of his tiny small town in the middle of nowhere neighbours about it. During the '70s gay characters were starting to appear in tv shows but most were effeminate stereotypes that he probably could not relate to. He might even have heard about the murder of Harvey Milk in 1978. Then in the '80s came the AIDS epidemic. Terrifying. It's possible his parents died at some point in the '80-'90s and he may have connected with the doomsday prepper/survivalist/conspiracy theory internet boards/forums in the '90s and began building his bunker. Not much friendliness towards gay men on those though...! You can see how he really walled himself off to protect who he truly was. It took complete society collapse for him to feel safe enough to express his sexuality, finally meeting someone as open and clearly defenceless as Frank.

    Slight spoiler:
    I like they they expanded on Bill's story and fleshed it out. Since in the game It was only implied that he was gay because of the adult magazines in his collection when Ellie was sifting through. This is cool to see relatively non-important things from the game getting some added attention and having it wrap around back into the main story.

    This is cute reaction but it’s not lost on me that you cut out almost all of the kissing scenes or anything alluding to sex with the exception of when they first met. Because let’s be real, there were no sex scenes. And I don’t buy that you did that for some TH-cam monetization policy. Because I’ve seen other reacts include them without issue and I would bet TH-cam would have a bigger issue with a close up with a gunshot wound. I can tell this episode got to you and you genuinely enjoyed it. But I can’t help but question why that specific decision was made.
    P.S. I’m not sure why you also felt like you had to hold back your tears, but you should feel free to let your feelings fly! It’s all a part of the reactions

  • @shellic5166
    @shellic5166 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, that was my reaction....you just met and you turn your back on this man, you kiss him and jump in a shower, making yourself exceptional vulnerable. Bill gave up all his survival instincts, not knowing if Frank was lying and there were people in the woods wanting for Frank to kill him to gain the entire compound. It was very unrealistic to me and made a hard-core survivalist look like a horny teenage boy. It just felt like a waste of an episode. We see a 2 hour back story about people who do not continue on with the show and do not add to the storyline in any significant way. Their backstory could have been played out in flashbacks when Ellie and Joel got there. Most main characters don't get a 2 hour backstory. Plus I heard many people who played the game were looking forward to seeing Bill and Ellie's relationship and were sad that it got cut out of the show.
    This episode fell very short for me.

    It's OK to refer to them as zombies. They fit the zombie trope, and the word is used to refer to real world insects that are infected with cordyceps. Just don't try to apply the standard zombie rules that were established by George Romero.
