I always struggle with backing moving. So what I now do is mark my placement and cut backing according to hoop and stick it on garment with adhesive then hoop all togher.
I would love to see what you did with the extra fabric in order to get these shirts on the home style machine. The extra fabric always causes a problem.

Not very scientific to guess the gap between your fingers. Puckering is the hardest part of machine embroidery.
