Crazy horse said: "I will return to you in stone" one of his many visions. I wonder what else he proficized that wasnt spoken of? His story was the essence of a lakota man. Simple earthly powerful and very natural i one day would love to make a statue of him with his horse on 2 feet and his war club in the air. Symbolizing his strength to lead.
How did the Lakota tribe feel when they were driven from their land and the faces of those admired by their enemies were carved into the mountainside? It must have felt like vandalism.
Let's just say, they were not amused...that's their sacred land. Even at this late date, not one single treaty signed by the US government has ever been honored....what a travesty....
I knew about Crazy Horse’s construction for some time now. The morons trying to erase/cancel American History... Who now think the Presidents on Mount Rushmore are “Problematic.” Have no idea this is being constructed. What these schools have done to American kids. Is a crime against the USA. Here in New York. They just destroyed a statue of Frederick Douglass. (Hands over face) The Democrats are an unruly Marxists Mobb. That needs to be stopped!
I went to Mt Rushmore in the mid 70s and remember seeing Crazy Horse in the distance. All I could really see was lots of scaffolding and rubble. I don't think it was even open to the public back then.
After the Crazy Horse creator died, his wife was visionary enough to say, "Finish the head and people will come." And, she was right. I was there in 2018. The monument can only be worked on for approx. 4 hours per day because of weather, etc. They hope to open a University near there~in the next 30 to 50 years.
@Tammy T As a European, I have no say in the matter, but logic tells me, that if they had been erected within the timespan of the existing Confederacy, I would agree with you. As far as I know, these monuments/statues of Confederate heroes were erected LOOOONG AFTER the civil war ended, and the Confederacy no longer existed, some of them as late as the 1950 I've read. As a consequence their historical value becomes a bit lugubrious.
@Tammy T That's why we have history books and history classes at schools and colleges, not to mention libraries and museums. Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California were all part of Mexican domain. How many statues of Pres- Herera and Santa Anna do you find in any of those states, or places of battle. Not even at San Jacinto are there any statues of any of the Mexican Presidents or generals. You have to go into the San Jacinto war museum to find out about them, the same at any other battleground memorials in New Mexico, Utah, Arizona and Nevada.

My father had a good job in Chicago and he was able to take his four kids and wife out on vacation for 4 weeks every August. We went out west and I saw Mount Rushmore several times. Along the way we read someplace that the Crazy Horse monument was going to be completed someday. It's unfortunately not in my father's lifetime, but maybe in mine. My mother's mother was 100% native so I've been trying to get information from a friend about how he had a blood test to reveal ancestry. Now I live in the SouthWest where we don't need a wall that wouldn't work.
Years ago, I was lucky enough to spend some time rigging ropes for a geo mapping project for the greatest family in the world. They are an amazing family beyond description and Crazy Horse Memorial is far and away the single greatest monument in U.S. history. Please go see it.
"I see a time of Seven Generations when all the colors of mankind will gather under the Sacred Tree of Life and the whole earth will become One Circle again". "One does not sell the earth upon which the people walk". Crazy Horse 🐎
I am glad to see you quoting Crazy Horse. He was one of the greatest prophets for all of us that any of us has seen. That time he saw for the gathering is close upon us now, as pandemics rage and capitalism fails for lack of anyone else to exploit.
@@larrysherk Thanks i am still learning and love the history of our Native peoples of the land. We could all learn so much by the Teachings of all of these prophets and Elders of our Past. Crazy Horse is one of my Favorites from reading about how he was. True Warrior at a young age. I have a few books I am looking over. We need to continue to teach out peers.
My husband and I saw the early stages of this monument on our honeymoon in 1958. There was a lot of prep work done with leveling the ground where the arm is. HUGE project!!
I was working for Phillips66 Oil Co. in Rapid City SD in 1974 and Korczak Ziolkowski was using our fuel and lubricants in all his equipment . I spent a day with him on the mountain and the evening at his home. He drove me all over the area in his jeep and we drank whiskey in his living room. His wife Ruth brought it to us straight, in water glass tumblers!! (after a day with no meals....ugh!) He was a wonderful guy, full of enthusiasm and loving life and his gigantic project. He knew that he would not live to finish the sculpture , and he said so. He hoped that his family and foundation would complete it someday. However, nearby Rapid City is the location of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology , one of the premier hard rock mining engineering schools in the nation. I studied Civil Engineering there in the years following my visits with Korczak, and expert geophysical scientists and mining engineers at the school had determined that the Crazy Horse sculpture could never be completed because the rock the mountain is comprised of is not monolithic or uniform and could never support the type of sculpture that Ziolkowski envisioned. I can clearly see that coming true in this video made 50 years after I stood on the top of the mountain with Korczak. There's been very little change or progress in 50 years, and what has been done bears only a passing resemblance to the models and drawings Ziolkowski made originally. Too bad - His was a magnificent vision , but the raw material just was not then, and never will be there to make it real.
I agree - there is a lot of enthusiasm there, but you can really see in the rock, that it's not solid enough for fine details or anything of the like. Even if the details had been gotten right, they wouldn't last for very long before something chipped or broken off.
first heard about this when I was in first grade, n never heard anything about it ever since, I was worried they quit, good to see they're still working on it 12 years later.
Maybe it is because you can't count on that outstretched arm just collapsing under its own weight? Could it have something to do with the fact that the Lakota people think the mountain has value in itself? Maybe the mountain is worth more than the great white sculptor's tribute. Maybe money would be better spent on programs to preserve native languages in the US, to teach North American native history in schools or to prosecute those who dump toxic waste upstream from reserves.
@ Speak for yourself. When I was a kid growing up in KS we had native american museums and a place I went to on a field trip was more than just a museum, it was a village that educated us on the ways of life for the indians and the "old west" history. I swear everyone thinks that what they are the only depiction of america. Native Americans were not demonized in history class. Yes we took the land a long time ago, yes most first world nations were once a land of some other people. If you know anything about history you know EVERY BIT OF LAND was once someone else's. All the way back to neanderthals and cavemen, and before that animal territories and land that was once covered by water before continents dispersed. Lack of education is a serious issue. Native Americans were different tribes who fought over land too. Mexico was once native americans taken over by spain. It's all a mess how we deal with our culture in the US nowadays, we only divide instead of be humble and learn.
I was there in 1981, and you couldn’t see much at the time, just a huge building site.....it’s really incredibly amazing that it has gotten so beautiful in the meantime.....when I was there almost 40 years ago, I couldn’t see this being finished.....or as far as in this video!! @@eb8601 And do you have any idea what the Lakota want? They were NOT protecting anything from anyone, The Black Hills was/is their land according to treaties dating back to the 1800's and they want it back. When gold was discovered in "them there hills", the treaty was broken and the government took the lands back. In 1980 the United States Supreme Court awarded the Sioux tribes in the area 1.3 BILLION dollars which until today they refuse to take since the land is NOT FOR SALE. EVERY SINGLE YEAR that money is sitting in the US treasury earning INTEREST. The tribes can NOT come to any agreement...SHOULD WE TAKE THE MONEY OR NOT...right NOW is NOT...and why is that? The Sioux do NOT want Mount Rushmore returned to them, what the tribes want is a piece of the "pie" which the tourist dollars and some additional land...unfortunately no one is able to agree on anything. So going back to your comment, this isn't a RACIAL matter as much as it is a MONEY matter and Trump isn't racist. By the way is is RALLY and NOT RALLEY...
@Richard Hammonds Actually Black people support Native Americans and respect their status as the first people of the Americas. Black people were not enslaved by Crazy Horse or the Lakota people so Black people in USA have no reason whatsoever to tear down this stunning tribute to a fearless leader who fought for his people against the same White people who simultanoeusly dispossessed Native Americans of their land and enslaved Blacks.
@@nobulawutwala2127 you'd better do some research, since the Sioux as well as other tribes regularly took slaves and it didn't matter the color of their skin. But as far as "enslaving" them, that was done by their own people back in Africa, and then they were sold to European and Middle East and Asian traders.
@@jeffburnham6611 I'm African myself and educated. This narrative that Africans sold their people to the Europeans is also not entirely true. Also on the rare occassion that certain kings and chiefs did sell slaves to the Europeans the Europeans should not have agreed to "buy" slaves. But most cases African slaves where abducted in large numbers. As for the Native Americans they enslaved each other not Africans so therefore I stand my ground that we Blacks have no beef with them.
@@jeffburnham6611 In anycase only a morally and spiritually corrupt person would agree to "buy" another human being. You see the mere act of refusing to respect and honour another human's right to their God given freedom buy enslaving them the enslaver looses a peace off himself too.

Stupid rationalizations here as to why IT CANT POSSIBLY BE THE WHITE MANS FAULT.Why is it so hard to admit the founders of this country destroyed the lives of millions of people who cared for this land long before we screwed everything up..And dont forget your knowledge is based on what the white peoples historical viewpoint was.Obviously slanted.Try reading and listening to native peoples history. Its out there if you care enough to do the critical research.

@John Caulfield Ah !969......what a great !year.

@Tammy T ..people wanna know that bad they can check out a book at their local library or go online.

Now That is a REAL AMERICAN monument !

This is beautiful thing is though CNN didn't interview a Lakota and ask them how it makes them feel
I don't think that was the purpose of the video. I think there is a documentary out there somewhere that delves into that though.

Why aren’t we funding this?
Obama didn't fund it
@@rogerward3390 And Trump less even of course
Its a waste of time explaining that to you ,you are damned living with your ignorance .stay safe and try to understand your own history Sir
This is stunningly gorgeous.
I hope we get to see it complete in our lifetime.
Not a chance.

@tim conway criminals the ones who came in ships and killed everybody because... i forgot the reason. You sucker piece of shit
