STOP Getting Lost in Detail!

  • Even relatively simple subjects can have a lot of detail - particularly in various surface textures. It is so easy to either ignore it or get tangled up in trying to draw too much of it. Listen to this technique and watch the demo at the same time and learn how to draw surface textures and achieve the correct balance and marks. You even have a chance to draw it as well using the reference photo from the channel Community Page.

    I draw with colored pencils, graphite, and charcoal. The other day I was drawing a still life and I got to where I needed to draw the woven cloth upon which the objects sat. It was so full of detail that it looked overwhelming. So, I asked myself, "What would Stephen Travers do?" I drew enough to have a few details give the feeling of a woven cloth without getting bogged down in every, little, detail. Thank you!

    Your videos are consistently helpful, right to the point, and just the right length. You should have a million subscribers. I just sent an email to an art group I organize w/ 430 members. It included my top 10 favorite YT channels. I had no problem putting you on it. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.

    I’m having a 2nd go at this one today and finished the cottage from your other video yesterday. These videos are so helpful and I am very grateful for your wonderful teaching. I fear if I hadn’t found you I would have wasted lots of time doing things ineffectually.

    Stephen, this video was very helpful. I’m guilty of overloading details in a drawing. Simplifying the details will help my drawings tremendously. Your shed turned out so beautiful. Thanks for all the info.

    I love the way you make it seem so simple to just "give the effect of the detail".... I'm still struggling with it, but thanks to your videos I'm getting a bit better at summarizing the details; I think that at some point this all has to do with developing better observation powers, or rather, trying to see the details as part of a larger whole. Btw., I really LOVE this particular drawing!

    Did you think of drawing manga? Your drawings so good I can’t stop thinking it would be amazing in manga panels

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks. I didn’t even know what manga was until a couple of years ago - though I loved AstroBoy in the 1960s on TV when I was a kid. And then I really liked reading Superman comics as an older kid and young teen. But I must say I’ve been thrilled to discover how much my art has resonated with manga artists for their background work. Maybe it’s not too late to get a second job, eh?😉

      @@stephentraversart I read Berserk manga right now, and I am very inspired by the work of Kentaro Miura. He was an astounding mangaka, maybe you will enjoy it too (though I must warn you this manga is very violent 😭).

      I agree I think his work would look great in manga panels, it reminds me of Takehiko Inoue’s backgrounds in Vagabond with how detailed it is
