the loud music bit is hilarious 🤣 also, thank you for the update, it's the best part i also really like the idea that if you spend time on your phone looking at things that are related to your interests it might be much less destructive. i like drawing and DIYing, and i used to be really addicted to instagram and it felt awful. i replaced it with Pinterest for looking at pictures. Pinterest can be addictive too of course, but i find it much much more manageable because it only gives me stuff on drawing and DIY, i don't feel drained after, even if i spend a bit too much time there
This is probably the most thought provoking digital minimalism content I've seen yet for the sole reason that you actually accept your need to sometimes not be productive and even somewhat consumerism. Not only does that feel like a healthier compromise, but it doesn't have the fake "THIS THING CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER!!!!", feel that a lot of this type of media usually has
My way of doing this is with a Phone + Tablet combo. My thought process behind this is the following: 1. Things I would be doing on a phone, I would rather do on a bigger screen anyways. 2. The size and awkwardness of a tablet makes it so that every time I need to connect myself to the internet, I have to do so with intent. I have to actually sit down and find some time to fiddle with a tablet instead of impulsively snatching my phone out of my pocket in the middle of a workday. Having a tablet means that, I don't have to completely give up the functionality of a smartphone while still retaining the philosophy behind a "lite phone".
I'm wanting to do this sort of thing as well, dumbing down my smartphone or buying a dumbphone + getting a tablet for entertainment. I think having the two different devices will make me more conscious of the time spend because the transition from one thing to another will feel more ceremonious, rather than randomly getting sucked into a reddit thread when I originally opened up my phone to check my bank account lol Which tablet did you go with? I'm wondering about the size difference between an iPad mini and regular 11" sizes. I also can't decide between apple and android lol
hey! I found this video so refreshing and relatable! A couple of years ago, I also had a troblesome relationship with my phone, so I deleted some social media that I thought were actual burdens and just felt happier about not wasting so much time on watching things that were not really important at all and didn't bring me any long-term joy (like the joy of actually talking with my friends about an animation or a game that I found, or making my life permanently better by spending a lot of time actually researching a topic that I like and becoming more educated on it!). Now that I mainly use social media only for research and don't have unnecessary stuff in my mind, I find it easier to study and just have more time for recreational activities like listening to my favourite music for hours
I'm genuinely surprised how this doesn't have more views. Here's to hoping it gets more than the original, and thank you as well for the skits, it gave me a good chuckle.
I appreciate the update! I'm in a similar situation to you pre-lite phone, and I decided it would work best for me to have a different device altogether for texts and calls (just a dumbphone). But even so, I replaced my social media on my phone with doomscrolling through youtube on my computer, so mindfulness is really what it's about. thank you for the thoughtful video.
As someone who is trying to work on their relationship with my phone and social media (I work in the games industry and need to have apps for my work and I’m an aspiring author that’s trying to promote themselves on social media) your videos have been incredibly inspiring. You have a subscription for keeping it real and for having an incredible style! ❤️✨
I had the same issue a few years ago. I worked so so hard back then and my doomscrolling was like a "something I need to do to compensate myself". Doomscrolling for hours at night, even when I wasnt enjoying it at all and sleeping very little really damaged my health. So later I learn to enjoy my time with my phone, doing things I like, sharing things I like with people and hobbies I like, research, create and be more me. Love your video, it's a healthy perspective.
Most social media is boring to me also, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and snapchat. I have roughly a minute a day average use on most of them... 0 on snapchat at the moment. I only consider TH-cam a social media when I'm being social on it, like right now. It also don't have a messager like all the other apps including TikTok, which I don't use at all. But overall, I just go with the flow, I don't try stopping the use of any apps. I use em till I get board of em, and TH-cam is the only app left that I haven't got board of yet, but I've gotten to the point where I've seen every type of content there is on TH-cam, 10x over. It's only every once in a few months I see something a slightly original, and I guess that's what keeps me hanging on.
Something I had struggled with for a little while is TH-cam shorts. I would get a suggested short on my homepage or something, and then just scroll to see random stuff for a long time. After a while, it got old and I realized that I just don’t like it. I wanna do other stuff. It feels like a waste of time. But now if I want to watch a short that’s in my suggested, instead of scrolling down, I scroll to the right from the edge so that way it goes back. Something about that scrolling up is really addictive and it’s really worrying. But I think I’m mostly past it. There were a couple times I found myself scrolling Twitter too much, but I quickly stopped letting myself do that because I really didn’t like it, for the same reason as TH-cam shorts
Crazy enough, I watched a video from Ethan Nestor just yesterday who had this exact idea. A kind of "not smart, but not dumb" phone. I've already deleted a bunch of social media off my phone like reddit and twitter because i recognized that it was making my life more negative than it was enriching it. I think a lot more people are going to realize in the future that while phones are not necessarily bad, there's a point where it becomes too much. Sometimes we don't have to be available 24/7.
i have so much to say about this video that i will make two comments. i love your approach to this video. i related a lot to the Time Limit function of iPhones, in which instead of going from mindless scrolling to productivity, it’s easier to just hit “Ignore Limit.” also the bit with you hitting yourself with the keyboard was pretty funny. i remember watching the first part to this challenge a while back, and it’s nice to see your progress. keep up the good work
I’ve seen a few videos on the same topic. I find it fascinating. My phone has been a lite phone ever since I got my first smart phone. Calls, texts, emails, maps and music. I can’t tell you why I never subscribed to social media. I have nothing against it. I am indifferent about it.
If you like using a phone like a landline, if you can, try using a stand up wireless charger. you can use it exactly like a landline hang up, keep it just barely out of reach.
It’s kinda crazy if you’re scrolling endlessly through your phone even if you have the mini this is a good vid hopefully it helps me and a lot of other people
I just found your channel through this, and this really is a great video. A lot of people who make videos like this make empty promises to people, but you're straightforward with us. I got rid of my social media a long time ago, i only eventually use twitter and instagram for twenty one pilots stuff, but i don't spend more than 2 minutes a day on there so i think it's fine. Also during the part where you mentioned you scroll ebay to find games i was like "that's literally me", i do that every day and sometimes end up getting really good game deals that will last me very long, it's a cool thing to do (i got mario kart ds for 10$, try beating that)
that's how i changed my digital life. I started to get sucked into the whole "dumb phone" side but then realized that i didnt want to spend fad money for something so redundant. Its all self control. If you are catching yourself wasting away, that's a good first step. Getting a smart watch also helped me minimize my phone usage because all i need in a device is to be reachable for everybody else in my life. Ill spend some time watching youtube in the evening when im done with everything then grab my kindle and read a little something before falling asleep. dont overcomplicate simplifying your life.
I think the Apple Watch with an E-SIM is great for such purpose too. You can get calls, messages and you can listen to music via Bluetooth headphones but you the screen is to small to use it to distract yourself.

That’s why we have these mini tablets of phones today… iPhone mini FTW.
I have 3 phones. An iPhone se, pixel 8,and an LG v30. I'm gonna turn the iPhone into like a pda or something I need to be able to locate my keys from anywhere

tbh maturing is realizing its more fun to go outside than sit and scroll on social media all day

I've done both, and both are fun, but going outside can be pretty boring if there literally ain't nothing to do... especially out here in the country.
