In this instance, Marie was right. Debra was being a child and ruined Marie's gift. Why in the hell would Marie want a family photo with Debra's parents in it! Debra ruined her gift because she did not get her way in requesting to change their Christmas tradition. Even then she wasn't being sincere because if she was, why didn't she suggest to split Christmas Eve and Christmas day celebrations on the year that Christmas is at her parents house? Her parents are supposed more reasonable and would probably be more agreeable to the arrangement. If I was Marie, I would have said screw them and sat out on the photo.
Chef Juan dela Cruz, yes she was a great actress and amazing lady. I was so sad when she died. She was just wonderful in sitcoms and I will miss her. Too bad people don't live longer. I wish she would have anyway. Loved her. She ALWAYS made me laugh so much.

Debra even understood how overbearing Marie could be during her pregnancy with Ally, but since she's so stubborn, she had to learn the hard way. Therefore, she should have sucked it up and allowed Ray to give Marie her ideal family portrait. Additionally, it's not the first time Debra tried to overstep Marie during the holidays. There was that Thanksgiving in which Debra cheated Marie out of her year when she could have easily waited for the following year. She knows that Marie doesn't take these matters lightly, and it is inconsiderate of her to place Ray in these difficult situations.

Even though Marie was annoying, childish, and very overbearing, Ray, Robert and Frank would be LOST without her. She's the one who kept everyone fed, managed the bills and stroked their egos (specifically Ray's).
As much as I love the character, I never took a close look at how selfish she is, but that's what makes it so funny. Rest in Peace Doris Roberts.. truly an amazing talent.

Poor Ray Ray. A 40ish-year-old who doesn't have the stones to take the upper hand against his proficiently domineering mother and is still held hostage under her thumb. A man isn't a man who allows his manipulative mom to authorize his every expedition throughout his adult life, especially when he's married.
Yet Ray warned Debra during the beginning of their marriage about the challenges that come from living closely to his parents. However, Debra is controlling and stubborn, and so she had to learn the hard way. At least Ray is realistic & tries to mitigate problems before they happen.

I liked this episode because you can relate to every characters opinion on the subject. You can understand why Marie is upset because it's supposed to be a Barone family picture and Debra's parents are in it. You can understand why Debra wants her parents in the picture because they are part of the family. Robert being upset about Amy being in the picture is understandable but since she isn't married to him that reason is understandable as well. Frank has no opinion in this and Poor Ray has to tolerate everybody and finally blows up at everybody which he should because he's always the one forced to be the peacemaker. Overall great episode and relatable to everybody.
Plus, Debra wasn't going to get to see her parents during the holidays. I love how relatable each character's woe is and Ray trying to keep the peace and eventually snapping at the pashmina is absolutely hysterical!
The thing with Marie doing her passive-aggressive thing.. 'oh I'm not feeling well, just take the picture without me. ' [I'll be over in the corner sulking about : fill-in-the blank]. My own mother was just like that, and how many other peoples' mothers. Mine especially really cranked up her act around Christmas, which made for some not-so-fond Christmas memories. .
Too sad.. I mean pictures were meant to be kept for good memories.. if this is what it would be like then better wipe taking a family photograph outta list. I'm done takung them.. I capture surprise photos instead. 👌🏻👌🏻 The good memories are All mine. What's the good in keeping fake photos anyways?
Marie's upset because Debra's parents are going to be in the picture. Marie would be thrilled if the picture was taken without Debra and Frank in it picture but she was willing to tolerate having them in the picture but not Warren and Lois.
I used to watch it every morning. TBS, after about 10 years, me being able, to see it in the morning, took it off their schedule. Really pi**es me off. I looked forward to watching it, every morning. Damn!! I don't know why they did this. And they won't answer me back, as to why it was done. I don't have a DVD player. And I don't know anything, about streaming.
This episode is so bad, it’s good. It reflects how grey the characters are in what makes ELR a good comedy. Marie is a toxic human being, but she is a loving mother, despite her distaste for Debra, there were times she helped her (she was the first person to tell her about the big fork and spoon in showing Debra moving the suitcase would make her the bigger person). Debra is always made out to be a victim of her in-laws, but then again, when does she ever admit when she’s wrong? When does she ever stand up to Marie and Frank herself instead of trying to make Ray do her dirty work? When does she ever not compare how perfect her family is to Rays? She invited her parents behind Rays back to be on the photo and then smugly tells him to talk to Marie about it instead of doing it herself. She’s not doing it to make him suffer, it’s because she’s a bully; she pushes Ray around because he’s spineless, but is afraid of Marie and Frank because she has no power over them. And then there’s Robert too. He always has to make a big deal about how unfair his life is compared to Ray and take every opportunity to mock him even when he knows it’s not appropriate. This one of the few episodes where Ray is a victim because he only wants to give his mother a nice gift, but everyone has to have it their way and take zero responsibility for their actions. Again, shows how these characters are not all black and white and that’s what makes them so good.
I always dreaded Christmas. My sister and I always fought. She is such a controlling b***h. I don't know how she has stayed married, as long as she has. 30 some years. I really think, she acts this way, just with me. Anyway, I haven't seen her in months. I don't care to. I know, some might say this is not right. But, if you would see how/what goes on, between us. You would understand.
At 3:20, when you see the photo of everyone but Robert smiling, you then hear but don't see Robert punch Raymond and you hear him say,"Ooh!(falls on the floor) It was worth it."
Because Marie's a manipulating and vindictive woman who believes she should get the upper hand in getting what she wants and controlling the lives of her family selfishly and contemptuously. She's a pro at inflicting guilt and undermining her kids, making them feel small and helpless whenever she chastizes them to give in to her expectations like weak knee wimps.
I Love this scene. My sister sent me a pashmina today!!!! I told her about this scene, & she replied that Debra's mother was never on this show! So I googled this scene & sent it to her!!!! He was a good writer as well as a good actor. I still say Robert was awesome. Debra ( my deceased sisters name ) and when our little brother died, I watched every episode I could find. Now all my family is in Heaven but this show keeps me grounded.

It always bothered me from Debra’s perspective. I mean she wanted to see her parents during Christmas Eve/ Day when they would have spent the Christmas period with Ray’s parents for the majority of their relationship given that they lived in closer proximity. And then not only does Marie deny Debra the chance to see her parents on either of the Christmas days but Ray backs Marie up. And then what would happen on the 26th or 27th December or some day before New Years if Debra wanted to still see her parents (albeit a little late)? I wouldn’t put it past Marie and Ray to try and come up with an excuse for why Debra could not see her parents during any of those days as well. I think deep down, Debra knew this could happen so she acted out by inviting her parents to the Christmas family picture.
If Robert and Amy were married at this time, she wouldn't want Amy's parents and brother in the picture. I bet Amy's parents would also want to have a family portrait for themselves but would allow Frank and Marie in it, despite the way they feel about them. Robert would ask, "My parents can also be in the picture?" and Hank would say,"Of course. They are part of the family. What kind of horrible people would exclude their child's in-laws from the picture?" Frank and Marie would look ashamed.
Relatively accurate, accept for two things: 1)Frank and Marie wouldn't look ashamed, as they almost never get ashamed; 2) Hank's remarks would have been a bit more snarky, something to Pat like "Well, Mother, I suppose its only right we include them. We are family after all, both in Robert and Amy's marriage and in God's sight. Even if they are Catholic."

I liked this episode because you can relate to every characters opinion on the subject. You can understand why Marie is upset because it's supposed to be a Barone family picture and Debra's parents are in it. You can understand why Debra wants her parents in the picture because they are part of the family. Robert being upset about Amy being in the picture is understandable but since she isn't married to him that reason is understandable as well. Frank has no opinion in this and Poor Ray has to tolerate everybody and finally blows up at everybody which he should because he's always the one forced to be the peacemaker. Overall great episode and relatable to everybody.
Plus, Debra wasn't going to get to see her parents during the holidays. I love how relatable each character's woe is and Ray trying to keep the peace and eventually snapping at the pashmina is absolutely hysterical!
It would have made more sense to have two pictures. One with Deb's parents and one with Ray's.
I hated this episode. All the malarkey could be avoided if they just took multiple pictures, one with Debs parents and one without

The thing with Marie doing her passive-aggressive thing.. 'oh I'm not feeling well, just take the picture without me. ' [I'll be over in the corner sulking about : fill-in-the blank]. My own mother was just like that, and how many other peoples' mothers. Mine especially really cranked up her act around Christmas, which made for some not-so-fond Christmas memories. .
Too sad.. I mean pictures were meant to be kept for good memories.. if this is what it would be like then better wipe taking a family photograph outta list.
I'm done takung them.. I capture surprise photos instead. 👌🏻👌🏻 The good memories are All mine.

Marie's upset because Debra's parents are going to be in the picture. Marie would be thrilled if the picture was taken without Debra and Frank in it picture but she was willing to tolerate having them in the picture but not Warren and Lois.

I used to watch it every morning. TBS, after about 10 years, me being able, to see it in the morning, took it off their schedule. Really pi**es me off. I looked forward to watching it, every morning. Damn!! I don't know why they did this. And they won't answer me back, as to why it was done. I don't have a DVD player. And I don't know anything, about streaming.

This episode is so bad, it’s good. It reflects how grey the characters are in what makes ELR a good comedy. Marie is a toxic human being, but she is a loving mother, despite her distaste for Debra, there were times she helped her (she was the first person to tell her about the big fork and spoon in showing Debra moving the suitcase would make her the bigger person). Debra is always made out to be a victim of her in-laws, but then again, when does she ever admit when she’s wrong? When does she ever stand up to Marie and Frank herself instead of trying to make Ray do her dirty work? When does she ever not compare how perfect her family is to Rays? She invited her parents behind Rays back to be on the photo and then smugly tells him to talk to Marie about it instead of doing it herself. She’s not doing it to make him suffer, it’s because she’s a bully; she pushes Ray around because he’s spineless, but is afraid of Marie and Frank because she has no power over them. And then there’s Robert too. He always has to make a big deal about how unfair his life is compared to Ray and take every opportunity to mock him even when he knows it’s not appropriate. This one of the few episodes where Ray is a victim because he only wants to give his mother a nice gift, but everyone has to have it their way and take zero responsibility for their actions. Again, shows how these characters are not all black and white and that’s what makes them so good.

I always dreaded Christmas. My sister and I always fought. She is such a controlling b***h. I don't know how she has stayed married, as long as she has. 30 some years. I really think, she acts this way, just with me. Anyway, I haven't seen her in months. I don't care to. I know, some might say this is not right. But, if you would see how/what goes on, between us. You would understand.
At 3:20, when you see the photo of everyone but Robert smiling, you then hear but don't see Robert punch Raymond and you hear him say,"Ooh!(falls on the floor) It was worth it."
I never saw or heard that. I would have liked to. Bet it was funny.
This program along with the grace of God got me through every 🙏 family member 🙏 of mine passing away.

Because Marie's a manipulating and vindictive woman who believes she should get the upper hand in getting what she wants and controlling the lives of her family selfishly and contemptuously. She's a pro at inflicting guilt and undermining her kids, making them feel small and helpless whenever she chastizes them to give in to her expectations like weak knee wimps.
I Love this scene. My sister sent me a pashmina today!!!! I told her about this scene, & she replied that Debra's mother was never on this show! So I googled this scene & sent it to her!!!! I said, I never even heard this word: pashmina until I saw this. I can't believe I got a pashmina today!!! And mine is a Christmas gift!!!

He was a good writer as well as a good actor. I still say Robert was awesome. Debra ( my deceased sisters name ) and when our little brother died, I watched every episode I could find. Now all my family is in Heaven but this show keeps me grounded.

When Ray loses his shit, it’s always the best scene ever.
It always bothered me from Debra’s perspective. I mean she wanted to see her parents during Christmas Eve/ Day when they would have spent the Christmas period with Ray’s parents for the majority of their relationship given that they lived in closer proximity.
And then not only does Marie deny Debra the chance to see her parents on either of the Christmas days but Ray backs Marie up.
And then what would happen on the 26th or 27th December or some day before New Years if Debra wanted to still see her parents (albeit a little late)? I wouldn’t put it past Marie and Ray to try and come up with an excuse for why Debra could not see her parents during any of those days as well.
I think deep down, Debra knew this could happen so she acted out by inviting her parents to the Christmas family picture.
This exact situation happens with my family about every four years, when we decide to have a family photo taken...

If Robert and Amy were married at this time, she wouldn't want Amy's parents and brother in the picture. I bet Amy's parents would also want to have a family portrait for themselves but would allow Frank and Marie in it, despite the way they feel about them. Robert would ask, "My parents can also be in the picture?" and Hank would say,"Of course. They are part of the family. What kind of horrible people would exclude their child's in-laws from the picture?" Frank and Marie would look ashamed.
Relatively accurate, accept for two things: 1)Frank and Marie wouldn't look ashamed, as they almost never get ashamed; 2) Hank's remarks would have been a bit more snarky, something to Pat like "Well, Mother, I suppose its only right we include them. We are family after all, both in Robert and Amy's marriage and in God's sight. Even if they are Catholic."
