BELL ISLAND, My Hometown

  • Bell Island was a thriving mining town but when the mines closed in 1965 there was a mass exodus as people moved all over Canada and the USA to find employment. There are many holes where homes used to be and there were many broken hearted Bell Islanders who felt what this singer expresses. The Bell Islanders who remained have struggled to keep the island alive and I visit as often as I can. These pictures are all taken on Bell Island or of Bell Island while waiting in Portugal Cove for the ferry to take me to the island. The town of Bell Island is called Wabana, A part of my heart is buried within the iron ore rocks of Bell Island.

I haven't been to Bell Island since the 1980s but it is on my list for the next visit. My family is from St.John's but I'm sure we're related to your Kavanaghs somewhere down the line lol. ❤️❤️

Amazing song and SO SO proud of you for writing and sharing. I love Newfoundland. My Mom lives in St. John's. Have visited numerous time, including to Bell Island. This song evokes alot of emotion, as I fell in love with the southern shore of NL, and bought a vacation home in Ferryland 2 summers ago. So happy and proud and am planning to be married there next summer, God willing. Bless You!!! Greetings from Pennsylvania.

Thanks for posting these pictures, brings back memories. My late grandfather John Janes lived at the top of the hill in Portugal Cove, his step-son Rick Snow still lives in the house, his sister Robin lives on the island still. I should visit soon, hopefully next year.

I think you can buy it on iTunes. I have the CD. This is a popular country singer so you should be able to get it . The singer is Iris De Ment , the song is "Our Town" and it's probably on other CD's but the CD I have with the song is called Infamous Angel.
I agree that the song touches the heart of anyone who has has to leave their town that's why I thought it was so appropriate for my video. I didn't know who that man on the mural was. Thanks for that info.
    Good luck finding the song.

Beautiful song. Thank you for this. My great-grandmother was born on Bell Island in 1899 and emigrated to New York City in 1918. She died when I was 16, in 1989. I wish I could have asked her to tell me more stories about growing up in Newfoundland; I only remember a few from her. She had a few other siblings who also emigrated to the US, while other stayed in NF and/or moved to other parts of Canada. I’m trying to learn more about them via ancestry.com. I do remember my great-grandmother saying that while she missed her family when she left NF (in 1918), she felt she was improving her life by moving to the US because there were so few jobs and opportunities in NF at that time. Just whaling and mining and little else.

As a younger man, I left for Bell Island from Toronto. I stayed in the “Virg house” for a bunch of months. I was 19 at the time (about 20 years ago now). During my short stay, I met so many great people of whom I’ve regrettably lost contact with since. I often wonder how “the boys” are doin, and if they’d remember me?
    [“Mark H”, (Scarborough)”Mac”, LCC!What’re y’at? If you’re still around; throw down a comment.]
Anyways, I’ve got kids and a wife now, and I very much look forward to showing them the beauty and history of your island. Although, I think we’ll visit during the summer this time. 😉
    🍻from Ontario!!

Hello eyerybody, I hope someone will read this... I´m sixteen years old and i´m from germany. I will do an exchange year in new foundland which starts zhis year in summer and my exchange year maybe will take place in Bell island( not sure yet, the chance is 20 percent or something) Can somebody please tell me something about the island, for example how it is to live there? Do you need to go by car everywhere or is it also possible to go by bike? What´s the school like? Can you recommend it? How do you like living there in general? Best wishes!

I dont know when this episode was broadcast but unfortunately in 2005 Helios flight 522 DID have to disabled pilots (from decompression as they forgot to press the right bloody button). An Air Stewart who was traning to be a pilot managed to get an oxygen mask on and tried in vain to get into the cockpit. However thanks to the post-911 locked and reinforced cockpit doors the poor fellow couldnt break in. Ultimately the plane ran out of fuel and crashed.

Hi Reid, I am Chickie but I've graduated to "Chick" LOL. On the picture of the 4 of us in school uniforms you can see your house behind us. Do you still live out west and do you ever go to Bell Island? It's still beautiful there. Many of my videos have Bell Island pictures but it won't let me post a channel link here. If you search Eileen Kavanagh or chickk2006 you might find them.
