Early 80s commentary on the cold war with someone wondering how it will all end and high powered politicians and military wondering about if "its a mistake" after the worst case scenario they caused. The name Ronnie is in reference to former US president Ronald Reagan

Harri managed to get the meaning from this song without the original video, which was an MTV staple back in the day.

Colin Hay's vocals were excellent in this one. A few years back Hay re-did an acoustic version of Men At Work's song 'Overkill'. Imo, it's better than the original.

Enjoyed your reaction, Harri, and your take on the song was on the money. The 80s sure had great music, but it was often a tense time politically. More than the subject matter, though, it was always the music that drew me to this one. Such a vibe!

You're exactly right. The tension between the USSR and the USA and her NATO allies was a very real concern during the early to mid-1980s. In fact, in 1983 we came exceedingly close to a nuclear war when the USSR's early warning system triggered a warning that the USA had launched their ICBMs and they were headed toward the Soviet Union.
Fortunately, a cool-headed Soviet General with balls of steel ordered a standdown and a Soviet nuclear launch was narrowly averted. A subsequent investigation revealed that the USSR's early warning system had registered a 'false positive' and that there was no nuclear threat after all. This revelation resulted in new safeguards being activated in order to avoid such an error from happening again.

I worked at HQ Strategic Air Command from 1988-1991. It was an interesting perspective on the Cold War. From the inside. That's all I can say, of course. There were lots of safeguards, and my respect for our military leaders increased then. They were ready for war, that was their job. But as the SAC moto says, "Peace Is Our Profession."

The video for this is really powerful. One thing younger generations don't have is a fear of war and nuclear war in particular. As others have said this came out at the height of Reagan, "Ronnie" in the song, and again the video shows how easy it could be for us to all die. It was a pretty big song off this album. Wish kids would hear this song and see the video - it's quite a message. Thanks for great reactions Harri!!!!

This song was a satirical product of the Cold War, before the USSR disbanded in 1989, and the (seemingly at the time) very possible outcome of nuclear holocaust. Those who lived those days remember very well the "duck and cover" drills in elementary school.

Men At Work are an Australian rock band formed in1978. Their biggest hits were "Who Can It Be Now?" & "Down Under". They had some other songs such as "Be Good Johnny", "Overkill", "Dr. Heckyll & Mr. Jive", "Everything I Need", "Maria", "The Longest Night" etc. Men At Work performed "Down Under" at the closing ceremony of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, alongside Paul Hogan of "Crocodile" Dundee.

Interestingly apart from "Down Under," thought they were a bit ahead of their time with some of the introvert/alienation/paranoid themes covered in their songs. Fantastic!
