I use mods for this game and I can say the file getting deleted is indeed one of the steps for the diamonds to spawn but also the drop zone needs to be changed
they are the trophy score... basically gives you an idea of what the trophy score of the animal will be. The other numbers are the weight, health, and the level of the animal

If I am correct if someone has hosted a MP server before, a hacker can enter the server and change their pop files to contain several diamonds.
