    Katie, I love your videos! I learn so much from you. I am in my late 50's and living in my car. Like you, I am not afraid to travel alone and sleep in my car. I have PTSD, and my car is my safe place. I don't like crowds, so I tend to stay where there are just a few cars near me. You have made me more aware and cautious of my surroundings by watching your videos. Please keep them coming. Safe travels to you always.

      I have PTSD also and many years ago I found my safest place was the back seat of my Grand Am Gt with blacked out tinted windows. I would lay a blanket across the headrests of the front two seats like a curtain. And kept a visor blocking out the windshield. I felt totally safe and it eased my anxiety.

    I can certainly relate to parking in sketchy places. Being a truck driver sometimes I have limited options to park in a place I feel 100% comfortable or safe. Preplanning your trip and knowing as much about the area where you intend to spend a night is important and with Google maps, mapquest or whatever media source you use,you can have a pretty good idea ahead of time. Over time you just know where not to linger too long cuz things gonna get weird.

    I lived in my car (not by choice) for a month or two and I honestly never felt unsafe. I slept in a Walmart parking lot and the only run-ins I ever had was with a landscaper about once every couple of weeks, at 3a.m, that would be leaf blowing under my car and we would just stare at each other lol

    I've had to sleep in my car a few times and this is what I do. My rear Windows are 'limo' tinted so it's very hard to see into my car, especially at night. My front Windows have a lighter tint on them but they are still hard to see in at night. I have never been pulled over for tint issues. The other thing I do for further privacy is put a blanket over and across my front two seats and across to the head rests on my rear seats. This creates a canopy of tent effect in my back seat where I was sleeping. My car interior is black so I used a black blanket. That way even if someone was to look into my car through the front windshield they would have a very difficult time detecting the black blanket over the black interior of my car. It's virtually impossible to detect the black blanket of looking into the side Windows both front and back. One other main reason I chose to do this setup was because quite often I couldn't go to sleep right away so I would browse the web on my phone or tablet, watch movies, etc. This way the light from my phone or tablet is not visible to passer bys. The other main benefit of doing this was that I didn't have to go through the hassle of covering up all my windows, and it it literally only takes a couple of minutes to get in place when your bunkering down for the night, and half that amount of time to fold up when I was done sleeping. It worked like a charm for me. Hopefully this might be a helpful tip for others finding themselves having to spend some nights in their car. May God bless you all, and keep you safe.

    During my long summer road trips I sleep in the interstate rest stops sometimes just to save money. I have talked to several rest stop attendants working the night shift. Interstate rest stops are the patrol jurisdiction of the state police or highway patrol. Most state police are pretty quick to squash crime at rest stops. Many truckers drive the same route year over year and sleep at the same truck stops. Some are on a first name basis with the state boys along their trucking routes. Truckers have a skeezy rep but the majority don't want criminals lurking at night. They will radio in to state police about any funny business. The rest stop is actually a very poor choice of venues for attempting a robbery or assault. There's only one way for the attacker to get away, back out onto the southbound lanes and the next exit is ten miles or more down the road. That's an easy mark for the highway patrol. They can finish their donuts before they roll out on it.

    Rest stops are honestly as dangerous a place to sleep at night, Walmart parking lots are about the best their well lit and usually filled with truckers and other drivers trying to sleep, I keep my hammer handy within reach for me at night just in case

    • @simpleshoes

      florence cavallaro I have to agree. Walmart parking lots aren’t residential areas for people to live in their cars. Walmart knows people will stop coming to their business if the lot is full of homeless people. This lifestyle is using up a natural resource and contributing to air pollution. Also not paying property taxes that pay for the upkeep of the streets they’re traveling on, and street lighting at night that makes things safer. This just isn’t normal or healthy.

    • @Kelly-jn4cp
      @Kelly-jn4cp 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I watched an interview with someone from Walmart and they allow people to stay overnight in their parking lots. If the thought of someone sleeping in their car offends you there are lots of other places you can shop. I'm sure most people have bigger problems to worry about than where someone else is sleeping. My best friends 9 year old son has a brain tumor. That's a problem. If someone else, minding their own business, is sleeping in a car in a parking lot - not a real problem.

      Simpleshoes, ok but they pay depending on income ....income tax's, vehicle registration fees, in certain places smog cks or you cant get your tags, gas tax's, all the little drive thru fast food places or little/big restaurants they spend money at, car repair shops the list goes on and on oh toll bridges...this stimulates small businesses and local and state economies....

    I totally agree with all of this. You can kinda apply to life in general. It's really better to avoid situations where you are isolated and not in a public place, especially if you are alone. Just that goes a long way to making you feel safer/lessening the chance of something bad happening. If people are up to no good they generally do not want to risk being observed.

      No because its not THAT kind of anxiety , in other words your not sweating ,heart beating fast crying in the back of your car kind of anxiety. Its a more relaxed anxiety hard to explain but its not really anxiety if it was she wouldn't be able to sleep every night its just that keeping vigil keeping your guard up but at the same time your wrapped around your little cocoon feeling very in charge of your life , but I know what you mean in the beginning I never thought I could do this I mean who sleeps outside their car instead of being inside their home but I got to tell you I pick my spots very carefully I only sleep under flood lights and where there are a lots of people around

    I’m glad you shared this video, Katie. So i’ve been in my car for 8 months. But on month # 2 (staying in a friends driveway) i heard someone jiggling my friend and his girlfriend’s car handles. It was about 2:30am and i was dreading them coming near my car to do the same....they did just that. Freaked me out. I suppose it was some undesirables from across the street. There are known criminals in the neighborhood. Month # 3, i was parking on a street that i rotate spots on. Very safe neighborhood. HAH ! It was 11:30pm , and a young kid came up to my car window screaming and hollering and wanted in my car immediately. Hell No! I bounced the hell outta there. Month # 4 , 3:30am, someone was riding a skateboard back and forth past my car. He eventually said that he was gonna break into my car. Jeez ! Very unsettling. I stopped parking there altogether.

    My nephew bought me a solar powered radio with a crank. I can plug my phone into it to recharge it. There is also a VERY LOUD alarm button on it. "Woop, woop, woop, woop!!!" I would never do that to a police officer if he knocked on my window, but if it's someone else, I'm kind of looking forward to using it. Lol.

    Hi Katie! Great advice. Informative & useful. Thank God you've kept safe during your travels. I remember both the bison & cliff driving stories. I think I was more apprehensive hearing the night driving up a road w/ cliffs on either side. That would definitely scare the crap out of me. Anyway, great video, again...and great tips ( especially about keeping one's phone on & charged...it's something I feel we often time take for granted or overlook ). Take care! 👍🤟❤

    Do whatever you can to keep yourself safe! When I was working at a very sketchy place alone, though I have been told it’s overkill, I always had my knife in my holster on my hip. Just for the deterrent. And one time I had a very sketchy looking man approach me, notice my knife and walk away without buying anything or looking at anything to buy. I think being prepared saved my life, or at least saved me some trouble. Maybe this exact solution isn’t for you but anything to make someone think twice about messing with you ❤️

Also "scariest" thing that has ever happened to me while living in a car alone was someone knocking on my window to ask if I'm okay. Other scariest was with my girlfriend when we slept right next to a police station because we were in a bad area and felt that would be the safest.
