“Hand to Hand Combat is so that you know how to get to the weapon not to replace the weapon.” True wisdom! Thank you for sharing this. I will definitely be passing it along to my students.
Just showed my wife the video and she said what a brilliant video and now she knows why I watch them although not her thing she seemed really interested so hopefully a new subscriber 🙏
"hand to hand combat is to get to the weapon, not replace it......." finally a teacher who talks about strategic principles before getting into tactics and techniques. The video shows the depth of understanding and wisdom of Professor James.....very impressive!!!
Thank you, this also holds true with knife/blade locks and disarms. Someone with high skill "might" get it off but why take the chance. Please do one with " Disarm against the flat of the blade "technique. Mannnn! I have a Pet Peeve with that one.
There are no absolutes in movement. Movement is like water and there are no absolutes to the shape and flow of water. If in a self defense or fighting situation then one must learn to flow and react to whatever movement is coming towards them. One must practice often to develop this instinct. If during somewhere in that self defense situation an open hand from the attacker reveals itself and the defender can naturally take advantage of a finger lock without reaching for it, then that’s a blessing. Don’t reach and commit to a movement for something that isn’t there. Flow…and the method one uses to defend themselves will reveal itself instinctively as long as one practices enough to obtain this essential skill for self defense… Old and proud student of GM Lou Ferrer, Prof. Vee and Prof. David
I was just watching this video. I’ve been in a security game for a long time and when you grabbed him on the chest your thumb was sticking up. I personally have done this before tear the thumb backwards if you really want to get nasty hold that torn thumb shaking it up and down and pulling it out of it socket and twisting it around, tearing all the ligaments dislocating. That thumb will never heal properly.
I have never seen a finger lock in a real life situation. The time and effort used to pry the finger will just let assailant punch you or stab you while you are distracted.
my first teacher in the 90s had some brief knowledge about small circuit ju jitsu....a fascinating concept of breaking kinetic chains at the very peripherie of the body where its the weakest. The hand is our main tool, also in combat, so why not attack the opp where he is weakest (and nearest)??? Greetings from europe
They work, but you have to earn them. Off angling, pressure point strikes and or stunning an opponent first has to take place to capture fingers and other joints. Never try to capture joints prior to using any of the above suggested tools, it will probably end up in a disastrous lesson for the applicant. It goes without saying, it takes many years of practice to acquire this ability.
Hi, I was going to ask you, what you thought of locks and pressure point pain applications, I recently got into an argument, over applying pressure point control, and I prefaced it by saying " Maybe different if you're a Cop, Bouncer or Security officer" because otherwise I think their rubbish on the street. I used to get into a fair few situations when I was young, My background was Judo, with some Boxing and I'd been at a very rough Shotokan Karate school. The incident happened while I was at a work function. Basically, I'd reached a stage in my Engineering apprenticeship where I needed to start knowing who was who as I'd soon be meeting some of these people on-site and it would help if I knew them a little. A guy at the end of the Bar had been bugging me all night for free stuff, I'd complained to the Bar staff etc., to have him removed. I had been polite, and I wasn't looking for trouble, If, remember right I finally lost my patience a bit and said something quick-witted (Rude). He responded by jumping up and throwing what I thought was a punch at me, I blocked it and turned into it grabbing his arm and threw him hard, onto the floor, then using the wrist lock restraint/Brake, we had, had Drummed into our heads, I had his wrist with both hands on it, thumbs I thought sunk in deep then I saw all the blood, I booted him hard under the armpit and left. That was when I noticed my thumb on my right hand was hanging on by a thread. That was the last time I used a lock/pain restraint, Now if I do anything like that, it's a precursor to a Brake. This Karate master I had the argument with was a Cop, and so has that advantage of Buddies and Aurthority, I was just a Kid then against a 30-something grown man. This advice on pain restraint was passed to a 70-year-old female who tried it on her husband and felt safe going to the shops now, she didn't before? I'm 70 and have over 8 years of Dojo training in the old martial Arts of the '60s and '70s, there wasn't very much sport then, it was all self-defence focused, and Hard Training too, and the last thing I want to do at my age is attach myself to anyone. I have a Broken Back and spinal cord problems so now with the homeless camps, located locally from Toronto, in our Area I'm a Target, I've had 3 close calls since COVID started. Glad you covered that, I use my stick to Break Bone and disable them, as quickly as possible, collar bones being a favourite of mine, and then I escape as quickly as I can, as we in Canada have no right to self Defence if caught, I know I will need a lawyer and that will more than wipe me out Financially, it's a no win, we are just victims of our current political master.
Finger locks do work I've used it in the streets of NYC when I was a cop

Thank you for clarifying the finger lock myth. And I see that it may work, but maybe work is not good enough when one is trying to stay alive.

They work until you try it on some one that doesn’t care about their fingers
Finger locks do not work, at full speed... no way...
Show me a video, of a finger lock working in real life.. just one video...
