    Why doesn't sydney Swans play a home game in newcastle? I live in newcastle there would be about 5,000 people from newcastle that would go to the game plus 5,000 from Sydney would come up. Newcastle number 1 sports ground just had an eight million dollar redovelopment and can host afl match's.

      They should turn the race track next to McDonald Jones Stadium into a 10-15,000 seat oval stadium. Would turn the place into a awesome sports precinct

      Because the AFL signed a 30 Year Deal with the SCG to play 11 matches/year. The Swans have no say in this deal. They did have a say in the Stadium Australia deal when the government wanted to turn it into an oblong. Because they complained to the AFL that Swans fans did not want to go to Stadium Australia, This was of course before the Newcastle development & there was not a ground big enough to host AFL Footy.
      I can't see why the reserves can't play in Newcastle though. It would be good for Newcastle & good for the players.

    Suns and Lions need to play home and away matches at Darwin Cairns and Alice. If home and away then it doesn't disadvantage the Victorian clubs. GC vs Melb (H/A) GC vs North (H/A) Brisb vs Hawks (H/A) Brisb vs Bulldogs (H/A)... Straight away that is 8 matches. It gives Darwin great access to multiple footy teams. The AFL just has to commit to it, so fans can get engaged in supporting teams and taking up memberships... In reality GC could play 4 matches at Darwin. In fact if you have North Melb too playing Brisb and GC at Darwin then they could play 3 to 4 matches at Darwin. If a total commitment by North then they will get more fans and members.

    Look at the amount of money and facilities that Fremantle got from City of Cockburn. They left Freo and moved 12km down the road. Brand new facility, with rec centre, gym, pool, waterside park etc... Freo became the main tenant. Anything in place at Fremantle oval and within Fremantle just couldn't compete. North should do likewise.

    • @tubester4567
      @tubester4567 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Moving didnt improve freo's performance, players or attract thousands of new fans. Norths problems are not caused by location or facilities.

    • @BDub2024
      @BDub2024 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tubester4567 Moving for Freo meant that got top facilities basically free of charge. Based around a new Community hub its a huge advantage in set up and going forward, especially with costs etc. North never should have re-established Arden St. Essendon has moved. Hawks have moved twice... all about getting good facilities. In North's case they would get a huge benefit from the local government sector and pick up fans and corporate support. If they miss that opportunity, you'll only get clubs like Collingwood developing a strong presence in the area and working with communities etc. They won't play hard to get. They'll run programs and develop community centres in those outer suburbs and North will miss out again.

    • @BDub2024
      @BDub2024 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tubester4567 I'm not sure why you think moving would help Freo's performance, apart from better training facilities. Some players do like good facilities, but for many its not a big deal. Its well known that West Coast have the best training facilities in Australia. But Dockers is still excellent. Freo has moved into Cockburn and many Fremantle fans already live south of the river. In the case, of North they would be moving into an area that either don't know about footy or where they have 1/10th of any footy fans... probably less.

    • @tubester4567
      @tubester4567 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BDub2024 Well Eddie and others are saying North should move, to make them more successful/viable/popular otherwise whats the point of moving?. This can work in some cases but mostly fails. Hawthorn moved to VFL park in 2006 and were told they will get new fans in the highly populated South East, from Dandenong-Pakenham and sponsors from the huge industrial base there . After over a decade none of that happened and Hawks spent millions to build a new base in Dingley which still isnt finished due to costs and covid.
      StKilda spent a fortune to build a new base at Seaford signing lease agreements until 2060.....with the same promises of growing support from Frankston and down the Mornington peninsular. Saints started training there in 2010. Players and staff hated it, almost immediately and by 2018 they were back at Moorabbin ,after spending more millions to re-develop it.
      Its kind of funny people like Eddy push for clubs to move out of inner Melbourne to the outskirts but I remember when VFL park Waverley was closed and the main reason given it was "too far" to travel for most supporters, sponsors and the inner city AFL/media elite
      From memory Eddie was one of the biggest supporters of closing VFL park and building Marvel/Docklands in the city centre.
      Freo moving training grounds 10 minutes away works fine in a 2 team town, and your home stadium is still in the city centre.
      North has around 51,000 members last few years even while getting hammered every week by 10+ goals. Thats In a city with 9 teams. Freo has around 56.000 members in a 2 team town.
      Lack of supporters or facilities is not North's problem.

      @@tubester4567 coincidentally just read an old article from Caro Wilson expressing concern about Hawks leaving their heartland for Dingley... I'll answer your rest of your message in a sec. I did notice that Essendon moved 8.5km down the road to the airport for new training facilities.

    Reduce numbers may help fill teams in over saturated areas in Victoria but has the opposite effect in alot of areas too.
    I coach a women's team in the Pilbara in North WA and our team and every other team in our comp has about 40 girls ranging from 15-40+ years old. We don't have enough players to have Seniors and Reserves but still have to drop 10+ players per week depending on availability.
    Our comp is 4 seasons old and reducing players on the field reduces participation which will affect the development of the game at grass roots level.
    All of our junior clubs are full and turning kids away. How does reducing the amount of kids able to participate benefit them?
    I understand the visual aspect of it looking better on TV at elite level but it's not the same for grass roots footy.

    Bartel says go to where the population is, the problem is that with all of these new sprawling suburbs barely anyone lives there. A few high rises in the cbd has more people than entire suburbs on the urban fringe. One of the side effects of building only houses for as far as the eye can see. Kalkallo has a population of less than 6,000, it doesn't have a train station and is remote to the nearest sprawling suburb which also doesn't have a train station. Even with the mayor being a supporter it wouldn't be appealing for fans or players. You are essentially moving to the country. From southern cross to commute to Kalkallo by public transport it takes 2 hours, twice as long as it takes to get to Geelong from Southern cross. Keep in mind North Melbourne has a population of over 14,000 so they would be significantly reducing the population of the suburb they are situated in if they move. Surely it would be far more advantageous to move to Canberra which has a population of over 395,000 people or Newcastle which has a population of over 322,000. Important to keep in mind that fans in Melbourne in particular don't have a geographic connection with the team they support so the whole idea of moving to another part of Melbourne to increase support lacks validity. At the end of the day there is a big drop off from the big 3 Melbourne sides in terms of support and there is a significant drop off in support from the other Melbourne teams to North Melbourne. Moving to a tiny remote suburb isn't going to change that, need to either relegate them to the VFL or have them relocate.

      I completely agree with everything you have said with one exception. The belt from kalallo through Donnybrook to Wollert is the fastest growing region anywhere in Australia and I think would also be right up there with anywhere in the developed world. Expected population increase of 350k in 5 years, with quite literally 1000’s of homes being built every month. Will become a new sub city in Melbourne over the next decade. Although I agree it is basically regional Victoria and a terrible place to build a training base.

      Its a smart thing to move North into a northern suburb that is set to explode in numbers. You'll get the council throwing in support. A whole new group of immigrants will learn about AFL as the team will visit the kids. Have displays at shopping centres. Or even have big billboards around the suburb with North boys on it. The home ground then includes a community rec centre with pool and gyms etc. Create business opportunities for the players so they get involved in the community too. North could even get involved with a few shires up there. They're being propped up by AFL so they should give some back. Its a no brainer. I believe they should leave Arden St, but Eddie says stay. Bendigo is another issue. But the model is set up that North will ultimately fold. The big clubs in Melbourne are getting all the sponsorship coverage and money. Sooner or later they'll pressure the AFL as they will want to use their millions to win premierships. Then North will fold. So North need to do something to boost their money now.

    Eddie always thinking about how to grow, while way too many in the AFL stuck on 'tradition'.
    North made a terrible decision redeveloping Arden Street facilities a few years back.
    Its a small inner city suburb only a few miles from numerous other teams facilities, no room for growth and no where near where their brand needs to be.
    Their brand has the sprawling and booming northern suburbs yet they ignored it because of narrow, 'traditional' thinking.
    This might cost the team for good.

    North must go north. Pull their weight. Grow the game. But most importantly grow their supporter base. Currently they're a quarter of Collingwood for example... Without getting coverage and without success this will continue to deteriorate. North has to think creatively to get a big fan base of new people to the game. They must get new facilities from a local govt, community centre, promote the club at shopping centres, billboards in the area... AFL can really work it hard and in 4 years time North will start getting real success and they'll bring new people to the game. Council can contribute free tickets... I think its vitally important. Then even consider games in Bendigo or play Sydney and GWS in Canberra... and get a sponsorship. But its absolutely basic commonsense about northern Melbourne. If they were still playing at local grounds then I would still be urging them to play in the outer suburbs.
