The fact that so many books still name the Death Grips "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Vapor Wave and Swans, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Rock critics are still blinded by commercial success: the Death Grips sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Rock critics are often totally ignorant of the rock music of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that the Death Grips did anything worth of being saved.

EP: Visceral Grips Exmilitary: Death Grips The Money Store: Production-Value Grips No Love Deep Web: Experimental Grips Government Plates: Instrumental Grips Niggas On the Moon : &$^##%@ Grips JENNY DEATH : Punk Grips Bottomless Pit : Pop Grips Year of the Snitch : Terror Grips
Jenny Death isn't punk at all. The self-titled EP and Exmilitary is pure punk, since there's barely any digital/glitch influence, almost purely rock and industrial production.
it feels like there's an overarching story with all of their albums. the EP is the last years of an unhinged, abusive, cruel man who has grown old and developed dementia. it's off-joint, bare-bones, freaky, but still has lots of influence from golden age hip-hop, especially on Face Melter. Exmilitary is the introduction of his son. Beware lays out the groundwork for his descent into madness after suffering from the hands of his father, and the rest of the album spirals with him into the exact same mindset that dear old Dad was shown to have. it's a bit more slick and modern, but still calls back to the EP, like on Takyon. The Money Store is the years of the son when he's hustling constantly, living it up, but still absolutely paranoid and hateful of everything. it's a time in his life that he thinks is the best, but is obviously tormented and twisted when looking at it from the outside. the slicker production is only more and more glitchy than Exmilitary, and although he celebrates his life on Hustle Bones and Punk Weight, tracks like Lost Boys and I've Seen Footage reveal the truth. No Love Deep Web is his fall from "grace." he's lost his influence on people, he's fallen further into violence towards others and himself, and he's become homeless and impoverished. the production is minimal to show that he barely has anything besides himself. the lyrics are nauseating and cruel, showing his unwillingless to improve, especially on No Love. Government Plates is an abstract low, low, low point. he's realized how fucked up he is, but he doesn't see any way out. the lyrics are more distorted and abstract and glitchy, showing how he's losing his coherency. he hates love, he hates happiness, he hates freedom. he wants to kill everything, but now he realizes how messed up it all is. NOTM is a possible way out. the Bjork samples are a woman (perhaps girlfriend or maybe even his mother?) that has entered his life and is willing to help him. he's still aggressive and bitter, but now it feels more like a push-and-pull duet of him and the woman. him slowly learning to accept help even if he doesn't want to, and the girl becoming more insistent on pulling him out of the hole he's dug himself in. there's a way to change. it could have a happy ending. and then there's Jenny Death. he became abusive to the woman, and she left him. the grinding guitars show his anger towards her, and he decides to stay in his hole and become even more of a degenerate. Break Mirrors is his initial reaction to the break up. he smashes a mirror and cuts himself with it, spiraling back into his initial state of unhappiness and cruelty. Bottomless Pit is him returning to his lifestyle on Money Store. he's not going to change. he doesn't want to. he will continue to trick, cheat, and harm those around him until there's no one left, all the while rolling in the mud of his inner city life and cackling to himself all the way. but you can hear him sobbing. tracks like Spikes still have those depressed guitars showing how much he misses the woman. he's back on the grind, but at what cost? Year of The Snitch is him becoming completely demented and incoherent. The experimental and noise aspects of the album parallel the off-kilter aspects of the EP, showing how he's lost his sanity like his father. he's not even violent anymore, despite how much he acts like it. he's a hobo shouting at birds and mumbling to himself on the park bench. like father, like son.

Jenny Death isn't punk at all. The self-titled EP and Exmilitary is pure punk, since there's barely any digital/glitch influence, almost purely rock and industrial production.
Bottomless pit pop? Where do you get that from? That album is probably the least pop thing they've ever made
Full Moon will always be the best
it feels like there's an overarching story with all of their albums.
the EP is the last years of an unhinged, abusive, cruel man who has grown old and developed dementia. it's off-joint, bare-bones, freaky, but still has lots of influence from golden age hip-hop, especially on Face Melter.

00:00 Legends were made here.
Everything in my life changed when I started listening to Doing It Stealthy by Oloff.
I never knew Death Grips sampled Interstellar Overdrive by Pink Floyd. Goddamn.
