I’m born and raised in New York City by my Chinese parents from the mid 20th century. My mother is full Hakka and even though I never learned to speak Hakka but am proud of my Hakka heritage which I experienced by my mom’s example of courage, hardworking, and generous ways. She got a full scholarship from an American college in North Carolina starting with little English and graduated. I will always remember her fondly. Lee Kuan Yew as far as I understand is the best prime minister Singapore ever had and much respect for him.

My Grandfather from Dabu (Taipu) too, but don’t know in which village. We use to make Hakka traditional dish at home, Suan Pan Zi and Nepan, made from the potatoes. My dad said, these dish are from Taipu (Dabu). I found Dabu from Indonesian TH-camr who lives in China this year when he visited Dabu County, I’m kind a excited when I found about Dabu. Greetings from Jakarta, Indonesia.

Thanks for the coverage on Dabu. My father was also born in Dabu and migrated to Indonesia in 1950s following his father when he was 14 years old. He made a visit to his grandfather's house (where he grew up) about 7 years ago and we as a family accompanied him. The scenery was very much similar to the one in this video, and it was amazing to see how in the past families lived together in a big house. It is an unforgettable experience and I am proud to say I am a dabu hakka nyin.

I moved to Singapore almost 30 years ago but my ancestors were Hakkas who left Meixian district (part of Meizhou city) in Guangdong to migrate to Mauritius in the late 19th century / start of 20th century. I was born in Mauritius, as was my father. Meixian itself is not very far from Dabu county, LKY's ancestral place. For a long time, the Hakkas' plan was to "go back home" to China, "soon". That caused many of them not to develop to their full potential in their new country.

LSL & LKY are from Dabu. I found from some Dabu migration related materials, the 1st stop to Nanyang is usually Singapore. Then some of them go from there to Malaka/Perak (primarily for Tin mining) &, etc. Perak state is the path that my great-grandfather took. Many of our Hakka ancestors didn't go to KL until the tins ran out in Perak's mine, later also Seremban. (How I wished that he had stopped at Singapore.) Just something I found on the web and thought that you might also be interested in.

@@to_cya_ that's kinda nice, everyone of my family (grandfather, and 2 of my uncles were all killed by the Malay during the 513 conflict, my grandfather went to visit inlaws, as my dad was only few months old, along with my aunt, so everyone else were killed, except my great grandmother, which is another concubine of my great grandfather, so all of us were pretty much raised by my great grandmother, I think my grandfather & 2nd great grandmother has an age different of 40 years of something like that. Hence, most stuff I learned was hearsay from here. I always felt, we might be better off, if my great grandfather had stayed in Singapore or traveled a bit up north to Thailand. I was born and raised in Malaysia (until 18, but I am glad I am not there anymore, however, it got so cheap to the point, I think it will be a paradise for retirement. When I was a kid, we always drove to Butong, for 🦈 fin soup, Birdnest & many nice things, it was so cheap back then, and the exchange rate were 1MYR:10BHT. I think now it's 1:7, by the time I retire in 20 years, maybe 1:5? I felt kinda sorry for the Malaysian, but, it's not my doing. So many of my parents well-off friends have moved to Australia already. One of the best deal that happened to Malaysia, Jimmy Choo, can't even sustain a shop in his home town of Penang, James Wan (director of fast & furious, also choose Australia as his home, way too much brain drain.)

Right, Dabu was merged into Meizhou in 1950. Prior to that, it was part of Chaozhou. That's why the Hakka dialect there is influenced by Chaoshan dialect and the houses there have Chaoshan-style. But Chaozhou is also in the Guangdong Province. It was not transferred to Guangdong.

As a true nationalist/realist/pragmatist, Lee Kuan Yew hated Communism, he only compromised with post Mao Chinese leaders because he saw them moving away from real Communism, but if he were alive right now and saw how China is yet again moving closer to real communism under President Xi Jing Ping, he would totally disapprove China's current trajectory, good thing he died before witnessing the changes inside China that would have broken his heart and stripped any hope he had for the Chinese nation, I am from ASEAN and LKY looms big in my family's consciousness, we always talk about him and about Singapore, a city close to our hearts.

I agree. Lee hated communists but oddly admired some of their organisational methods. He saw a fellow pragmatist in Deng (coincidentally, another Hakka) and Deng had the humility to learn from Lee. The so-called "Singapore model" has been discussed from time to time within top echelons of the CCP, but I doubt any of the leadership are prepared to give up power and privilege and allow political competition through elections. China is still doing what it has done since Qing times - drive out risk takers and entrepreneurs like Lee's grandfather to foreign lands. China's loss has been Singapore's gain (and the gain of many other countries to which Hakka migrated to).

Deng Xiaoping (is Shezhuan Hakka) Hakka clan were very powerful back then, and the reason Shanzhen was choosen, not just because it's proximity to HK, but also it's a Hakka strong hold. 華僑城 is a Hakka Clan (from inside PRC) and they were doing all the right things, until Xi took over. I heard that this latest election, 中國人大代表竟然冇一個喺Canton, 廣西好似有兩個 , out of 200+.... Hakka is finished inside China 😢

V r product of our era of time, the society v live in, education v recieve .. most unconsciously. Never r v born in a vacuum. Hence by these, our values, rt or wrong, good or bad, our paradigm, outlook are formed. LKY, however smart he might have been, he was shaped by his British education & propaganda; biased against Communism, the big mistakes Mao made in the Cultural Rev, Great Leap Forward, etc. But then, his views evolved as he saw changes under TXPing. I think no political ideology is perfect all the time. So long a political system meets the needs of most people it is good, at least for that time. 2cents.
