  • "The Siskins". The waltz Zeisserln belongs to the group of compositions which Josef Strauss wrote for the balls held in Franz Unger’s casino on the occasion of the church festivals in Hernals, as his father and his brother Johann had done before him. In 1861 the feast day fell on 26 August, and the Strauss orchestra was ready. Josef had also contributed the expected dedication, namely, Die Zeisserln. There were almost certainly no siskins in the surroundings areas of Vienna, and so the audience was delighted to hear the strains of delicate birds coming from the Strauss orchestra. Obviously, this melodious waltz was received and greeted most enthusiastically. The ball reporters, like the audience, were convinced that they had heard an "authentically Viennese composition." Staying true to the Strauss family tradition, it complemented corresponding waltzes by Strauss Snr., while nevertheless developing melodies and harmonies along modern lines. The enthusiasm of the public was such that Die Zeisserln remained on the orchestra’s programmes during the entire Summer of 1861. The piano edition was published by Haslinger’s in time for the 1862 Carnival season. To date, the orchestral parts of the waltz have not been found. Since the metal sheet which publisher Haslinger used to produce them has been conserved, reconstructing the original version was no problem.

    Waltz 1A is probably one of the most original and creative waltz melodies that I heard among the lesser known waltzes. Every Pepi waltz should be famous!

    One of many works composed by Pepi inspired by the beauty of the nature. Mai-Rosen Op. 34, Zeisserln, Op. 114, Dorfschwalben aus Österreich Op. 164, Die Libelle Op. 204 or Herbstrosen Op. 232 - all are truly sublime masterpieces.

    By the way that's a great idea that you started uploading all those videos with Pepi works on TH-cam. I have watched all of them on the Dailymotion but since TH-cam doesn't block them anymore it's a great idea to put them here.

    Beautiful Josef's waltz, with elegant orchestration, in a very lively performance. From all the joyful melodies I like particularly those at 2:38 and 4:22. Thank you for uploading this great work!

      Yes, it's a very beautiful waltz by Josef Strauss. It will be a debut from the 2023 Vienna New Year's Concert. I'm sure it will be fantastic.

    It is a pity that Josef Strauss remained less known in the shadow of his older brother Johann II despite his amazing talent for composing a number of beautiful Viennese waltzes. Johann admitted that his younger brother had a better talent as a composer; he was merely widely known.

    This again is the same performance as mine - but mine is 9min 20 sec long, so you must have speeded it up - about 11% this time. I actually like the slower version - it sounds more lyrical and less rushed, although the faster version has its attractions. But I hope you don't mind me being honest with you - music is very subjective. How do you decide by how much to accelerate it?

      Thank you so very much for sharing your thoughts! Well, I speed up waltz by waltz and I just speed them up until they sound lively to me (most of naxos recordings are so slow and make these gems sound silly and boring), I just imagine being in a ballroom, that helps me a lot :)

    • @DrivermanO
      @DrivermanO 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ziehrereien478 I agree that some of these Naxos recordings are a bit laboured! But I take your point - but I must say at some points you must have very flashy footwork - I don't think I could move my feet that fast!

    Pepi era genial, no tant com Johann, però bo era una bella estona. Si no fos perquè ell no li agradava la música ni compondre podria haver estat un geni meravellós, però Déu va voler que sempre estigués a l'ombra de Johanb
