Swamimalai, a town in Tamil Nadu, is famous for its traditional method of bronze idol statue making. This craft is rooted in the Chola dynasty era (9th-13th century), known for its bronze sculptures. Here’s an overview of how these intricate bronze idols are crafted in Swamimalai: 1. Wax Model Creation (Lost-Wax Casting Method) Artisans begin by shaping the idol's design in beeswax, forming intricate details by hand. This wax model is a full-sized prototype of the final idol. Layers of clay are carefully applied over the wax model to form a mold. The clay mold is dried, and small openings are left to allow wax to drain out later. 2. Mold Baking and Wax Removal Once the mold is dry, it is heated in a kiln. The heat melts the wax inside, which is drained out, leaving a hollow clay mold. This is called the "lost-wax process." The mold is then further baked to harden it, making it ready to receive molten metal. 3. Metal Casting Bronze, an alloy of copper, tin, and sometimes small amounts of silver, is heated until molten. This molten metal is poured into the prepared clay mold. After cooling, the clay mold is broken to reveal the bronze idol inside. 4. Finishing and Detailing The rough bronze statue undergoes meticulous polishing and detailing. Any small flaws are smoothed out, and details like facial expressions, ornaments, and postures are carefully refined by skilled artisans. Artisans might also use chisels and files to enhance features, especially on the idol’s face and jewelry. 5. Patination and Final Touches The statue may go through a patination process to give it a characteristic color and shine. Finally, the idol is polished and, in some cases, inlaid with precious stones or given special touches as per tradition. This entire process can take several weeks to months, depending on the complexity of the idol. The artisans of Swamimalai, known as "Sthapathis," pass down this skill through generations, keeping this rich cultural heritage alive.
Dokara art is similar hollow casting using bee wax and 4500 years old. It probably peaked in artistic expression in Chola dynasty but the method would have been passed down from ancient times.
This 28 feet tall Sri. Nataraja bronze statue was installed in front of Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi's Pragati Maidan. This Mandapam was inaugurated in 2023. In this Mandapam the G20 New Delhi Summit took place and the historical document got signed where - USA, Russia, China all agreed to the agreement. Several world leaders participated in the G20 meeting where for the first time African Union was included in G20... Based on the idea of the Prime Minister, this grand Nataraja statue is designed and sculpted by the Traditional Sthapathis (Architect-Sculptors) of Tamil Nadu. Such traditional bronze work is the speciality of the Swami malai sthapathis. The same people also designed and sculpted the main bell of the New Ayodhya Sri. Rama temple.
Total RESPECT for the ARTISANS involved.. Nobody in the world can duplicate their skills.. That too with just basic equipment's, not some high tech robotics and machineries..
Obviously out come of lord Nataraja is extraordinary...... but watching the entire process and those people who worked in the project is too good......
I think you only follows news media’s…….just come to Tamilnadu….TN having record of most temples in India……you know every community’s big aim is to build temple for them…..each and every village have Vinayagar(Ganesh) temple. In my village every family gave minimum 30000 for new Ganesha temple building…. Each and every caste and sub caste having different temple….now they are building those temples in very big….may be around the cost of 20 to 25 crore rupees….. DMK may speak periyar to get votes but in underground it’s entirely different….
But Adi shankaracharya even came north for meditate & enlightenment, wrote Stotrams in Sanskrit but tamils hate to recite chants or mantras in sanskrit due to regional supremacist mindset over language
This is the highest form of devotion by those who participated in this project, especially the workforce. The music and singing were mesmerising. Har Har Mahadev.Om Namaha Shivaya.

I live in Tirupati and we are doing bronze idols for 30 years now and it’s great to see people appreciating the work they put in. But the only sad part is they ran out of time for the delivery date and placed it without the finished work. If there was some more time the statue would have been more beautiful
Just could've wrote tamil nadu if really wanted show regional pride but south india wasn't required truely, It's as if they aknowledge it to be different country like if some national art made by eastern states bengal, bihar, assam they won't write "East India specifically" Neither if some art made in Rajasthan, gujrat, maharastra then they would gonna write it "West India"
Commitment to achieve, Dedication towards perfection, Expertise, Hardwork, Perseverance, Aesthetic Sense, Micro management, devotion - all standing tall in Pragati Maidan for ages to come. This video should be available for those who visit this statue at the Bharat Mandapam itself. Only then people can assess its true magnanimity.
I have watched sthapathis making small statues, the temperatures near the mold is very hot. You can't stand there for long. They have done a beautiful job and made the country and state proud. ❤❤❤
seeing the video, there were some parts of the process that were dangerous acts, and i wish next time such a thing is done these do not happen. congratulations on this amazing achievement!
Instead of only focusing on the brilliant artisans and their skill, instead of being happy of our Nataraja perumal in front of the new parliament, instead of rejoicing that our traditional artisans are being respected and highlighted, the comments are filled with a North/South argument 🙄. Grow up. This country belongs to every Indian citizen. This is OUR country. Celebrate and respect our diversity. That is the spirit of a TRUE Indian. My salutations to the artisans for keeping these ancient traditions alive! 🙏
