Summer of 84 between June 6 and the end of the track season, as you can see by the lines laid out in the fairgrounds parking lot, which would only have been done for the Fair or Track. Living in paradise and not really aware of it. Some of us had it better than others, but it was still paradise, weather was always perfect for skating, 1/4 mile to the ocean, wind would blow right down the riverbed into the park, always a steady stream of cars on the I-5 even in 84, Cory Federman.... always wondered what he ended up doing. The Reservoir was a lot of fun to warm up in and every guy on the deck would warm up in the res for a few runs, the parking block was a good addition and late night fun session on that block were always a good time. I see hermies honda in the parking lot also. Thanks for the upload.

That's so rad! It's really cool to see the beginning stages of him trying to perfect the trick he invented. You can tell that the trick is still in it's infancy because he's not even getting inverted on these attempts, he's just doing them as a flat spin 540. Getting upside down on a 540 is what makes it a Mctwist, changing it from a trick to a work of art. Nobody ever made this trick look cooler than McGill. Absolute legend! Thanks for posting this.

Perfectly said. Spot on. Pretty much all pro skaters these days (and endless non-pro) can rip a 540. Endless grabs etc. Olliy 540's etc. But they just spin.. Like snowboarders on a super pipe. Mcgill WAS absolutely inverted and in blind flight when he perfected it. You're so right. The Mctwist. Very different than a 540. He was my favorite skater growing up.

Mike came back to Florida first after being in Sweden, where his family was. He skated in the Tampa Bay
area and did the 540 there at Warren Dunn's ramp. Chuck Hults talks about it on his channel. Not that
any of this means that much, we all know the big coming out party was at Del Mar and Mike should have
won the contest! :) Love seeing the practice video - a day in the life of skating back then. PRICELESS.

For those who don't know the players without a scorecard:
    - Lester Kasai in black shirt and white helmet at 1:32 and 2:30
    - Kevin Staab in purple helmet at 1:42
    - Christian Hosoi chillin' in the pink shirt at 2:30
    - Dan Wilkes in the green helmet and huge knee pads at 10:17
    - Bill Danforth at 12:09 and 16:10
    - Luis Espinoza from Fogtown at 19:23
    - Jeff Grosso in orange helmet at 21:14
    - Neil Blender in sleeveless white T-shirt at 21:30
    - Eric Grisham in yellow shirt and blue helmet at 22:45
Anyone know who the Variflex guy in the yellow helmet was (14:02, 19:40)?

Although this "may" be the first time Mcgills' 540 was filmed / videotaped. This is not the first time Mcgill ever landed / pulled off the 540 at Del Mar. But... Like You and I have stated.... It "may" be the first time it was filmed / videotaped. I say this because I was there the day he attempted and pulled off the very first 540 at Del Mar and it was slightly before this rad footage was shot. There was not a lot of people there the day he first did it at Del Mar. (Sidenote: I use to be a Del Mar Skate Ranch Employee and Del Mar Skate Ranch Local Skater. I worked in the Pro Shop and literally lived in the pro shop as well.... I was the nighttime security guard for the pro shop for a while and I slept on the pool table) But, that was before the 540 was invented. I was working and skating for Uncle Wiggley Skateboards around the time Mcgill introduced the 540. I recall that I was at Del Mar one day and there was a "Buzz" going around the park, that Mcgill was going to show up and perform a brand new trick that he had developed over seas at the Sweedish Skate Camp. (Like you state in the description of your video) Sure enough.... McGill showed up and did it and Grant Brittain (who was "in my opinion" obviously "tipped off" that it was going to happen)... (McGill rode for Tracker Trucks at the time... Tracker Trucks / Larry Balma / Peggy Cozins were the main financial funding behind Transworld Skateboard Magazine and Grant Brittain shot pics for Transworld Magazine) Connect the Dots..... and one can see how Grant was the one to take the first still pics of it. I think one of the pictures from that epic day eventually became the cover shot on Transworld Skateboard Magazine. Like I said.... I know about all these little details because I personally witnessed it occur. Unless Alzheimers or Dementia eventually overtake my 57 year old brain... I will never forget that day. It was truly an amazing sight to have witnessed. When McGill first did it on the east wall and pulled it off.... I knew my competitive days were over. There was no way in hell I was even going to try it, much less try to pull it off. It reminded me of a gymnastic dismount from the uneven parallel bars. Great footage in this video. Grossos' backside air slam is way gnarly. AWESOME~ SK-8 FOR LIFE~ DB~

Although this is the first footage of the mctwist done stateside. This is not the actual first footage of it ever. As over the last few months (end of 22, start of 23) super eight footage shot by a German photography of the mctwist done at the Swedish summer camp (84) has been released. It can be see on an interview Mike did on the Nine Club.

As an ex vert skater I can say that bowl at Delmar especially for a man Mike McGill's size of really hard to 5, it would be much easier for a smaller person to 5 it but even then it's trannies are so small and the concrete is unforgiving for bailing a lot.
