I'm an Egyptian emerging cinematographer and filmmaker, with almost 11 years experience of photography, when I went back to film school to study cinematography I've found a precious GEM! it's Painting with light by John Alton 1949, translated into Arabic in 1964, today in 2020 I googled the man, and I can't say how happy I am to see him in a live interview, the man is born in 1901 for God's sake! he's so generous and creative, very devoted too, what he wrote in his book is so detailed and rich, he's just a true mentor and unique man of craft. thank you Jorge for uploading this rare video, I truly appreciate it.
Film noir is the one film genre where knowing the name of the cameraman is as important as knowing the name of the director. Sometimes more so. Alton's work was never less than stunning. Honorable mention: Nick Musuraca, Woody Bredell, Harry J. Wild, and Russ Metty.

Anthony Mann and John Alton made magic together.
