That bullshark speeding towards the speerfisherman was terrifying, its so hard to see it coming. I imagine how bad it could have been if he didnt have his spear gun. Sad it died :( glad the guy is alright tho.
I can’t imagine how a predator species could evolve to not instinctually try to stalk something in direct line of sight, so it’s not super surprising. The shark likely is basing what angle to approach based on the movement of the diver, locomotion usually only goes in one way for most animals so the shark knows if it’s moving one direction then to creep up from the exact opposite direction.
I love these videos. Gives us an insight into how most sharks aren’t out there wanting to bite people. Its usually people being too close or completely unaware of the shark.
Thank you for showing people that sharks are not mindless killers, it really puts the situation into perspective so much more, I love sharks and yes they are apex predators that can be dangerous but most of the time if we were put in similar situations we would probably act defensive or confused too.
Those divers were VERY lucky they didn't get injuries worse than maybe a few stitches. Sad for the bull shark though... though before you even pointed out the spear didn't deploy, I saw it. The diver just was trying to get the bull shark to back off. His fingers weren't even on the button. Inertia just was not in the shark's favor though. :/ The great white shark bonk reminded me of a clip I saw of a careless diver from 5 years ago. Juvenile great white pushed a diver away from a humpback whale carcass at a really crazy speed. Could have injured the diver, but chose to just push the diver away (the diver was waaaayyyyy too close to the carcass). The diver went from like 20 m down to near the surface very quick. Then the shark swam away back to the carcass.
@@SHARKBYTES I'll keep looking for the juvenile clip. Here is a clip from a different site where someone tries to grab a ride on the back of an adult male great white, and he gave a warning shove. The video of that diver bitten by the tiger shark mid water made me think of that attack in the red sea by a longimanus. Similar situation overall (scattered group out in the open ocean and a shark takes a bite) but very different outcome that illustrates the difference between the oceanic whitetip and tiger shark and the reason why I'd be so much more scared of the former... While the tiger shark is easily deterred, the longimanus goes into full on attack and probably couldn't care less about a touch to the snout. The video of the angel shark is interesting though. Hey shark bytes, I have a question, are great white sharks territorial at all? Also what is the range of a white shark’s ampullae of Lorenzini? How far away can white sharks detect electric impulses? Thanks!
Hi Hari, yes whites can be territorial on occasion, and they'll definitely let you know if they want you gone! We don't have an exact scientific number on the range of the ampullae of lorenzini, but it's speculated to be around a few hundred feet.
Quick additional note on the bullshark that impaled itself: the diver said that he didn't fire the spear gun but that when the shark bit down it severed the elastic firing cord and so basically shot itself.
that mid column shark thing is no joke, I have had SUV sized sharks effortlessly cruise up behind me while I was surfacing in viz well over 15 meters, that huge thing sneaks up on you so fast, the moment I laid eyes on it, it simply veered off and went on its jolly day, probably just curious but serves as a reminded to be vigilant - vertical, hands tucked in bubbles.
Very interesting! Thank you! The truth is when humans are in the ocean depths, they are invading the territory and should expect to be invaded in return. It’s kind like if a shark just showed up in your house, you would fight to defend yourself. So do they when we show up in their house!

3:11 this was something big I learned the first time I scuba dived off the coast of Monterey bay. It was a training dive, so we had just walked in the water and swam far enough out that we had 20-30 feet of depth to train at the bottom. Due to how close the shore was and the ferocity of the waves. The visibility was horrendous, you couldn’t see more than 3 feet in front of you. The realization while I was out there that If there was a shark, there would be no way I could ever know. Yet he would know where I am easily. From that day I will never dive in murky water I can’t see in. These days I don’t want to touch the ocean if I don’t have a dive mask and can at least see a predator coming.

Great to hear theres a few Aussie subs! I agree with you, but also would probably eco 102nd Smirnov below and say the bull shark clip was likely an unprovoked attack (also sorry i mis-pronounced Queensland hahaha)
The abalone diver clip is my favourite shark incident video. The dismissive way that great white goes upside that guy's head is 100% the same energy as "Hey, what's that on your shirt?" *nose flick*, and you can almost hear the "LOLOLOLOL" as it swims off. Reminiscent of that other clip of a dolphin jumping out of a wave and bodychecking a guy off his surfboard - just animals gently being dicks.
The Angel Shark was terrified and just defending itself! I for sure would have bitten lol The second one i Love so much xD Shark: Outsch...sry my Bad! Have nice Day xD Feel bad because of the dead Bullshark, but this was a true Attack and of course the Fisher had to defend himself.
First time I saw the bull shark video I sincerely though it was some computer made up content, I did need some time to really understand it was real, so brutal it was. Sad the shark died, but it was a life changing moment so I can't blame the diver (and I can't understand how it is said, from him also, that he didn't pull the trigger, look at the rubbers). This said, isn't the most sadly video about sharks, you simply can't beat the terrible video of the Great white falling dead after being stucked in the shark cage (please a reaction video of it) thanks for your contents!
Dont know if you check comments on old videos or if you already know this but I have more info on the Tiger Shark incident in Fiji. That is indeed a baited dive but for Bull Sharks with the occasional Tiger rarely making a visit according to the operators I spoke to in Fiji.
Surrounding animals is so threatening. If it had been just one direction, the angel shark might've left, but it might not've been so scared as to bite too.
What I don't understand is why the diver was so close to the Angel shark and why they surrounded the shark. If I put myself in the head of the Angel Shark that looks like a pack of predators sneaking up on me
Hello, I wanted to ask if you knew anything or heard of the Indianapolis shark attack? I was looking into the story and I wasn’t able to find like any scientist perspectives on why the sharks behaved that way, so I was wondering if you had an answer or if you knew anything?
Hi Adelaide, hopefully i'll be doing a little video on the Indianapolis incident in the future. Although its always a little tricky to have a strong opinion on it because I wasn't there (of course)
Sharks are more willing to eat people than we like to think in the modern day. If they think there's an easy meal to be had, they will take it, or at least give it a chomp or two. "Sharks Happen" is a good channel btw check it out.
Ok Kristian your turn. Im sure youve got shark stories to share with us from your studies to becoming a marine biologist.. I would love to hear about them. When I was 8 or 9 my dad always said how much he would have loved to have become an oceanographer. And hed always follow that up with " you should become one then you can take me out on the boat with you.." I never became one..❤😢
7:45 it could have been more dangerous, if the diver had a wet-suit, because then he'd be sinking down like a stone and under bad circumstances, maybe not many weights, maybe the BCD has not enough upwards-force, maybe he'd drop the weights, without deflating the BCD, so really don't ever be alone around sharks, because you always wanna have someone to watch your back.... like literally watching if there are sharks aproaching you from behind, cause even if you just have to tap his nose or gills to get free, depending on what gear you chose and where the shark bit, it can all go south anyways
I think the diver who directed the shark into the tourists and then hung back while all of the other divers rushed in to help, was confused. He didn’t realize when he was hired that “safety” diver meant the tourists’ safety. If not fired after this incident, he’ll be resigning, now that it’s clear to him what the job description entails.
@@SHARKBYTES I can actually understand an immediate reflex; he could’ve been a new hire and just got caught off guard. It’s the hanging back and not helping his co-workers or the customers that’s the inexcusable.
If a shark is biting someone, sure looks like a attack, provoked or not,and I really think most sharks know the difference between,a clumsy human in the water and a graceful quick moving seal.
I can’t help but laugh slightly at that last one. The angel shark was like “fuck all of you, and fuck YOU in particular” and then they bite the diver that’s the farthest from the group 🤣 but yeah, even the most docile animals can be dangerous if you spook and/or anger them
Do you think it's possible that with so many different ways to put humans in the waters, baiting, ski, boats, kayak...over fishing...list goes on and on.. what they usually eat has influenced their life to the point of adding us to their menu?
In regards to the Bullshark form Queensland, Aus - I lived in Brisbane for some time, and we often saw bullsharks in the Brisbane river. I've always heard that they are an extremely volitile species of shark and with that comes some really territorial behaviour, which includes out of the blue attacks like these ones. As a scientist who studdies the behaviour of sharks, have you found Bullsharks to be volitile?
There’s no doubt bulls can be aggressive. The ones I’ve been in the water with in the past have been pretty docile though. It makes me think there are large differences in individual behaviour between bulls. Make sure you check out the Shark Bytes creature feature we did on them recently - I think you’d enjoy it!
yknow, if im diving with a group and i see the group surround any kind of animal with sharp teeth capable of divorcing me from my fingers, im just gonna go back on the boat. and this isnt isolated to just diving, if im outside the water and the group im with surrounds a wild animal capable of doing some good damage, im gonna make sure im outside of the strike range. xD
Im positive the main reason we are not on their regular prey menu is bc almost all the people who do get attacked are in decent to great physical shape, which would mean little fat and alot of bones, and im sure they know we tend to pack together like dolphins when one gets injured.....too risky for too little energy returns... But if we all weighed 300-400lbs and started swimming where the big guys are...., Then im sure we would see a upswing in attacks and consumption. As for me....never going near the sea.....😅

Shark bytes, I have a question. Do shark and ray scientist also study chimeras?
Yes - we do (although not me specifically). A friend of mine Brit (@BritFinucci on twitter) studies them!
@3:29--aahhh just wants to play tag....in murky water...oh come on Bruce no fair you opened your mouth on that tag.
Holy S*it the Tiger Shark clip realy show how massive these creatures are
Absolute units!!
Australian Subscriber here, I agree with you that none of these should really be considered attacks.
I'd say the one with the shark charging at the spear fisher most definitely was
Great to hear theres a few Aussie subs! I agree with you, but also would probably eco 102nd Smirnov below and say the bull shark clip was likely an unprovoked attack (also sorry i mis-pronounced Queensland hahaha)
It’s interesting that pretty much all of the shark attack situations I’ve seen, both here and elsewhere, have happened due to human error.
You are very reasonable and informative, thank you
glad you enjoyed the video Erin
Chickens, too
The Angel Shark was terrified and just defending itself! I for sure would have bitten lol
The second one i Love so much xD Shark: Outsch...sry my Bad! Have nice Day xD
Feel bad because of the dead Bullshark, but this was a true Attack and of course the Fisher had to defend himself.
Yeah, that angel shark was definitely acting in major self defence!
This said, isn't the most sadly video about sharks, you simply can't beat the terrible video of the Great white falling dead after being stucked in the shark cage (please a reaction video of it)
thanks for your contents!
Far out. I felt like I was watching a competition for the Darwin awards 😅
Dont know if you check comments on old videos or if you already know this but I have more info on the Tiger Shark incident in Fiji. That is indeed a baited dive but for Bull Sharks with the occasional Tiger rarely making a visit according to the operators I spoke to in Fiji.
Yes the angel shark! How Quickly he turned on that diver!!
I feel so bad for the bull shark🥺❤️
Love ur channel
Surrounding animals is so threatening. If it had been just one direction, the angel shark might've left, but it might not've been so scared as to bite too.
What I don't understand is why the diver was so close to the Angel shark and why they surrounded the shark. If I put myself in the head of the Angel Shark that looks like a pack of predators sneaking up on me
Definitely, never make something with sharp teeth feel like its trapped - recipe for disaster!
Wow Angel sharks are so beautiful
Sometimes I cheer for the sharks on some of these.
It's so important to be in a group and always make sure you've got eyes on the sharks (which includes the ones behind you!)
An invasion of privacy that badly? I know how that angel shark feels like. I would have done the same thing!
If I was that abalone diver at 3:15 I would’ve shit my pants. I love sharks they’re my favorite animal but fuck that shit was close.
Definitely not the best thing for him to do
@@SHARKBYTES I can actually understand an immediate reflex; he could’ve been a new hire and just got caught off guard. It’s the hanging back and not helping his co-workers or the customers that’s the inexcusable.
If a shark is biting someone, sure looks like a attack, provoked or not,and I really think most sharks know the difference between,a clumsy human in the water and a graceful quick moving seal.
I once saw baby angel sharks being fed, and was told that the speed at which they strike was something really crazy - about 1/30th of a second.
Yes thats right, very similar to Wobbegongs in that respect
@@SHARKBYTES I got to feed one of those once, too!
@@DazDaMan Amazing!
3:47 Luckiest guy ever
I can’t help but laugh slightly at that last one. The angel shark was like “fuck all of you, and fuck YOU in particular” and then they bite the diver that’s the farthest from the group 🤣 but yeah, even the most docile animals can be dangerous if you spook and/or anger them
Do you think it's possible that with so many different ways to put humans in the waters, baiting, ski, boats, kayak...over fishing...list goes on and on.. what they usually eat has influenced their life to the point of adding us to their menu?
The spearfisher in Australia would only had a snorkel. In Australia, it's illegal to spear fish with Scuba tanks.
5:53 Question: why is a shark's life worth more than a fish speared? I understand why we value human's more, but fish v shark?
What a legend! Imagine having that anecdote in your pocket. Killed a bull shark that attacked me with a spear gun.
At 25 seconds is that a real shark photo, I have never seen a bull shark with a head like that
Did you cover the British guy killed by a GW near Sydney few years ago?
Definitely treated human as prey
yknow, if im diving with a group and i see the group surround any kind of animal with sharp teeth capable of divorcing me from my fingers, im just gonna go back on the boat. and this isnt isolated to just diving, if im outside the water and the group im with surrounds a wild animal capable of doing some good damage, im gonna make sure im outside of the strike range. xD
Hahahah - each to their own and its all about whatever you feel comfortable doing in the water :)
