The thing about the AIDS joke is that it isn't even a good joke. Take away all of the shock value and dark humor what is the base of the Joke? People who have AIDS lose weight rapidly, so we are going to bring this guy on, say he has AIDS, and he will lose weight during the show. I just don't see a punchline. Substitute any disease and it still just not even a joke. Would watching somebodys hair fallout after chemo be a joke? Would you yell to somebody with early stages of M.S. Nothing is being subverted, there is no bigger statement, just an observation that everybody already knows about. You absolutely can make fun of AIDS, cancer, or anything else, but at least give me a punchline.
Dark jokes are jokes that touch on dark subjects i.e. cancer, rape etc. A mean spirited hoke can be disguised as a "you're ugly" joke but really just intentionally ripping on someone's looks just hiding it behind a joke. @@purplemist7
It’s no wonder how Chevy Chase has gotten a reputation of being difficult on set. Milton Berle, yes he was a perfectionist and wanted to have things his way, but the cast would feel bad for him in later years. As for Steven Seagal, he was a terrible Saturday Night Live host because he refused to tell a joke. He was rigid, and just wanted to be on the show for the sake of his new film at the time. But out of the hosts for SNL that have been discussed so far, Chevy Chase is easily the worst host. Being mean and rude to co-stars, even those he had worked with the longest, is not worth it.
Elon Musk has been mentioned as the worst host. And yes, his episode was terrible. But the cast overreacted. They were literally asking for "safe spaces" because he was hosting.
@@Attmayto be fair to them, they’d already had Stallone host the show before, so they likely thought it would be more of the same. The more I think about it the more I really do think that Chevy Chase is like the real life equivalent of BoJack Horseman, all the way down to his childhood upbringing.
I remember hearing about a roast done on him for Comedy Central that is just infamous for how bad it is and part of the reason is because almost everyone roasting him is a complete stranger because the obvious invintees didn't want anything to do with it.
Chevy Chase is the one actor in Hollywood I want to like so desperately! Between Community, the Vacation Flicks, Fletch, and the other products he’s created, he should be an absolute national treasure…but he just keeps putting his foot in his mouth, and inflates his ego to a point well past his own talents. This is why he’s currently doing DTV movies, a pariah of the entire SNL cast. Frankly, when they did the reunion show a few years back, I was astonished that he made a cameo.
Unfortunately the dark side of it all was behind every a-hole in acting there was some toxic bastard of an acting teacher TELLING them to be their worst person. That intensity and aggressiveness was seen as an extremely positive trait. Why do you think so many celebs take drugs?! Because your day at the office is going to be in a hot room with people like this for hours on end. These are *professionally* trained A-holes and they can do whatever they want to you.
10:44 Zappa got banned for playing up the fact he was reading from cue cards and adlibbing (Michaels' major "no-no" - nothing gets you banned faster than intentionally going off script). It was Elvis Costello who switched playing a song mid-performance - an all time classic SNL moment.
it's great that Zappa was John Belushi's antithesis, a complete teetotaler with no respect for people who drank or did drugs, including the cast of SNL, and yet Belushi was such a big fan of his that he didn't care as long as he got to host
I remember watching Elvis Costello do that. They started the song, played about a minute, and Elvis stopped, started waving his hands and saying, "No, no." Then they launched into the song they weren't supposed to play. I admired him for that. I remember watching the Zappa performance, too. They had little "boxes" on top of the studio monitors. When they did I Am the Slime, green slime oozed down the screens. They had Don Pardo do the voice part at the end.
I guess it depends HOW you go off script. Lindsay Lohan in the Debbie Downer sketch wasn't supposed to storm off when she did because she couldn't contain herself since EVERYONE was breaking.

The difference is that Bill is a manic depressive and Chevy isn’t. Bill acts like an asshole towards individual people, but then also has this need to be loved by everyone so does these insane grand gestures and kisses up to fans. Chevy doesn’t care what you think.
For such a tall guy, it's too bad he's never been able to be the bigger person in arguments. I also have to think that he and Lorne went to some pretty crazy parties back in the day, so that could be he's still on Lorne's good side.
Lorne is old now, and completely out of touch with comedy. He needs to retire. He still runs SNL like a drill sergeant. You still aren't allowed to improvise, and must read off of the cue cards. It's time for Lorne to step down and resign. But he won't do that because his ego is too big. But after 50 years at the helm, he needs to let someone else at the reigns who can bring a fresh new invigorating feel to the show. I think Keegan Michael Key would be a great as the showrunner.

Plus NBC has nothing to replace it with that will be nearly as popular. And no other channel has anything that can even compete with it. So SNL will stay on for another 50 years.
It might have to do with the fact that he is so heavily attached to SNL's legacy because he was part of the original cast. Micheals is also probably trying to save face because of the potential uproar if he were to ban Chase yet allow [insert just as controversial figure here] to come back and host. Stories of Bill Murray make it so hard to pin down exactly who that guy is. I do love how completely unwilling he was to sit down and shut up through Chevy's awful bullshit, and later in his career I remember Wes Anderson saying that Bill Murray would hang around onset to basically guard everyone from the incredibly cantankerous Gene Hackman. I dont know if hes got balls of steel, is obstinate to a fault, or just cannot stand bullies.
I remember watching his failed tv show when it was on. The advertisements for this before the premiere had Chase dressed like David Letterman and how Chase was going to destroy Letterman in the night-time battles
His general attitude ironically reminds me of a bit he did in Community. Pierce got mad and alienated everyone because he felt everyone else thought he was a joke and that he ruins everything to which Joel McHale rightfully countered "this doesn't disprove the theory!"

SNL was so bizarre when it first aired. I had kid memories of "Laugh In" and "The Smothers Brothers" but SNL had that touch of absurd and unexpected that I enjoyed. SCTV also delivered back then. Looking back, I believe that SCTV aged better, but they were both funny in the moment. I guess you had to be there.
I remember watching the Smothers Brothers do a special on my great grandma's enormous, ornate, wood grain box color T.V. set. I'd stay up late watching T.V. on my parent's little black & white T.V., just waiting for my dad to get home from working the late shift. Hearing "LIVE FROM NEW YORK, IT'S SATURDAY NIGHT!" Was SO exciting!! Everything was olive drab, mustard yellow, brown, and bright Orange. Those were the days.
Chevy hated doing the Community tv show. Clearly he thought being in a tv show is beneath him and he thought he should be in movies instead. He must have only took this role just to make money since clearly he isn't getting any other roles in Hollywood. They must of been aware of Cheavy behavior and they didn't want to hired him for their projects. It seems the creators of Community wasn't aware of Chevy behavior or they decided give him a chance that was a mistake. Of course Chevy got himself fired I surprised it didn't happen sooner. I guess Chevy made the character very popular and they couldn't get rid of him. But at the end he was too toxic to be around so they had to fired him.
I was fortunate to attend a couple of Friars Club roasts back in the 1990s and the early 2000s, back when I was a radio producer in New York. But the one of Chevy Chase was unlike any event I’ve ever seen where a group of comedians honors one of their own. The literal hatred of the man by many of the people in the room was palpable! I was told at the time that the producers had trouble finding performers to fill the time on stage, because a large number of the ones that they asked refused to do so. Several people who ended up speaking really didn’t know the guy. And the majority of the ones who spoke weren’t really being funny about their dislike of him, even if their shticks were filled with jokes. A few of the members of the audience were simply there (not going to name names out of respect) because they heard he would literally be humiliated and wanted to see it for themselves. Most such events are actually lovefests loaded with humor in the Don Rickles vein. This was more like some kind of therapy for people he had apparently slighted, or even worse (this was before the me too movement, and I can’t confirm some of the things I heard). It was mostly an enjoyable event. I loved being there and having a chance to mingle a little with some of my favorite comedians, and it was a privilege to be in that room. But I don’t think Chevy had a good time. I remember looking at him and thinking he was perhaps more than a little dismayed. The special that aired was heavily edited, and some of the cruelest and sickest jokes never made it to the broadcast. It remains probably the strangest comedy event I ever attended. th-cam.com/video/CG4W0OfzJjM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=vQREQ180cJtjvTM1
There seems to be an asshole/perfectionist problem with some cast members, not all of them but some. Chevy being one of them, and there are many stories about Dennis Miller including how he acted on the set of Bordello of Blood and also Mike Myers...Mike is a notorious perfectionist.
But it paid off for Mike Myers. If you know the crazy story behind Shrek. Shrek was actually a book first. Most people don't know that, because the book doesn't resemble the movie one bit. Basically the only similarities of the book and the movie, is there's an ogre named Shrek, and a donkey. Anyway, in 1991, 10 years before the Shrek movie was released, Steven Spielberg purchased the rights of the book to turn it into a film. It was originally going to be a 2D film. But after delays, and the success of Toy Story, they decided to go full CGI. Shrek was actually supposed to be DreamWorks Animation's first film, not Antz. They eventually got Chris Farley to voice Shrek. Chris Farley was a very popular comedian from the SNL renaissance of the 90s, and he had 2 hit movies, which made him a bankable movie star. So legend has it, Farley completed 75%-85% of his lines for Shrek before he died in 1997. And then the production was in chaos yet again. They scrambled to find a replacement for Farley, big names like Nicholas Cage, and others. But everyone they offered it to turned it down, stating that the Shrek character was too grotesque looking, and that they didn't want to voice such a grotesque looking character. If you look at the early designs of Shrek, you will know what I'm talking about. So they had to completely redesign Shrek, and make him cute. Eventually Mike Myers, one of Farley's fellow SNL cast members, who had just had a breakout smash with Austin Powers, agreed to voice Shrek, and take over for his friend Farley. So Mike recorded his dialog in his normal voice, and everyone loved it. But being the perfectionist Mike is, he decided he didn't like it, and wanted to re-record all his dialog with a Scottish accent. Costing the studio millions of dollars. But they agreed to it, because Mike Myers was the biggest movie star in the world, and they were already years delayed, and didn't want Myers to walk out, causing them to find another actor. So after 10 years, Shrek comes out, becomes the cultural phenomenon it is, and the rest is history.
@@joeybaseball7352 Oh yes it certainly did in the case of Shrek. It's the same voice he used for Stewart Mackenzie in So I Married An Axe Murderer and Fat Bastard in Austin Powers.

It is Mardi Gras time in New Orleans, and I always recall the time SNL attempted to go live from a Mardi Gras parade. The parade as most parades in New Orleans ran into delays, and never made it on the air. I was fairly young, but I have always remembered it.
*Elvis Costello was banned after switching from the "pre-approved song" to Radio Radio, and wasn't allowed back on until 1989. Frank Zappa wasn't banned. He simply never returned. It is said that everyone decided they didn't like him before the show even aired, which some speculate that it had to do with is strict no drugs policy. Obviously, the cast didn't follow the same policy.

I was a huge fan when I was young and didn't know any better. Such a shame. He could spend his energy bringing people joy, but chooses to spread misery. And it is a choice, don't kid yourself. You make a thousand choices each day and most of them can bring joy or misery based on how you comport yourself. Choose joy.
The fact that his old costars (Martin and Short) (Akroyd and Murray) are teaming up doing comedies without him, and that absolutely no one he knew would do his celebrity roast (and it will never air, because all it became was a bunch of young talent listing their grievances with the man) pretty much tells you how well liked the man is.
The part about Chase allegedly slapping Cherie Oteri in the back of the head made me think of people online complaining about NCIS going politically correct, presumedly because Gibbs was no longer slapping his subordinates in the back of the head. Because, really, how could anyone find that objectionable in a workplace? This indicts Lorne Michaels almost as much as it does Chevy Chase.
According to an annecdote from Dan Aykroyd, at a hollywood christmas party in the late 80s, Chevy Chase told a 15 minute long version of the aristocrats joke. By the 10 minute mark, everyone had left the room. According to Aykroyd, it hasn't that the joke was too obscene to stand, its just that no one wanted to listen to Chevy Chase for that long.
It has become absolutely all the rage to paint Chevy Chase in a horrendously negative light in the past decade or so. It’s the most predictable thing that comes up now when discussing him.

@@normalguy246 Sorry. That’s just how I talk.
I saw him first time in community and was tickled to find out he really was that character and cast fought with him 😂
Screw Chevy Chase
New SNL gets way too much flack. I feel like a lot of the people talking shit about the newer seasons haven't actually watched a lot of the sketches. Are there a lot of mid to bad sketches? Yeah, but there always have been. It's a WEEKLY comedy show. But, most of my favorite sketches are within the past 10 years. I don't find slapstick or just being loud funny, and I like the darker direction a lot of the sketches have taken in the past decade. Comedy is absolutely subjective, but I feel like most people have been exposed to one or two modern sketches that get exposure through being kinda cringe or just not funny. There is a goldmine of some of their funniest sketches they've done if you look. "Almost Pizza", "Mr.Westerburg", The porn stars one with Cecily and Vanessa, "Take Me Back", "80's Music Video", The one with Amy Schumer where she's hosting the Mother's Day game show. It is still funny. You just have to pay attention.
You're right and people more people should say it
Chase must know where some bodies are hidden
Fire! Fire! Noone can try and stop me! I'm outta control! I'm not afraid of you!
Somehow, I just knew this was coming.
As a kid growing up watching Chase, I can say he was funny up until his late night show, which really changed my mind about him.
I only learned about chase from community and boy oh boy does his character seem fitting.
Now I want to see Chevy Chase and Steven Seagal SNL crossover episode.
Sounds like he’s a narcissist
That Charlie Brown Christmas edit was 😚👌🏻
Chevy Chase: basically another John K.
I still find him treating Terry Sweeney like crap one of the lowest of the low for Chevy Chase.
SNL is just as bad for firing him for Victoria Jackson.
Was it worth for the medium talent that is Chevy to have a career?
I have been writing a movie script for 5 years that is called " The White Rabbit Prophecies." It's a comedy, mystery, drama, spiritual Mysticism and Romance that is kind of like " The African Queen" ...... but ( without a boat. )
Truth is that Chevy and Albert Brooks Einstien are my muse and thier brilliance moves me. I have issues too with Severe Bipolar from 3 athletic accidents in childhood were I tried to jump the canyon like Evil Kenevil and never made it either. sigh
Chevy has issues big F#%^^#@!!^ deal ,...... it's the imperfection that make us all human.
Listen, my brother made movies for 30 years for Harlequin Romance and they are sadly formula art that woman seem to love but Chevy is a GENIUS that would not never touch " Formula Art"......... for any price $$$$$$$$$$$$ ......and that's why he's gifted creative, funny free spirit.
As soon as I edit this 8 part series and find someone at a studiio with $ 160 million dollars then I'm goning to ask Chevy to join the team that will produce from thier home screen.
THis is my calling to make this movie since I was 7 in 1967 is all charity for the cats and dogs that need all our help at the SPCA .I want to draw on all the great experience of older wiser artists and dig into that well of knowledge and give them great purpose to share insights into my work
Isn't Chevy Chase the guy who got fired from Community for calling Donald Glover the n-word
