The Volga Tatars live in the central and eastern parts of European Russia and in western Siberia. They are the descendants of the Bulgar and Kipchak Turkic tribes who inhabited the western wing of the Mongol Empire, the area of the middle Volga River.

In the different classifications proposed so far, there is a wide consensus that the earliest split in the family was between the Bulgharic (also known as ‘Oghuric’) branch, which today only survives in Chuvash, and the Common Turkic branch, which is ancestral to all other contemporary Turkic languages.

An earlier date for the separation of proto-Turkic, preceding 209 BC would support the identification of Xiongnu language with proto-Bulgharic or one of its subgroups, while a later date of separation would make its association with proto-Turkic more plausible.

Only a part of Chuvash share common background with Finno-Ugric Mari, Erzia, Udmurt. But the Chuvash themselves have come from the Caucusus - there are many folk stories and legends on that. Recent genetic studies prove that, also showing that there's significant genetic difference with Mari. But it doesn't mean Mari and Chuvash are not close. Vice versa! The Chuvash and Mari fought together against Moscow and Kazan for a state of their own and share very similar culture.

I was thinking why would one not consider other looking Chuvash or looking less Chuvash than necessary - and there are no reasons why would need to progress this kind of thinking. To me, the greatest mystery of Chuvash is having been able to bring all different under the roof of one Tiră and one language.

@Purple1cloud 1:35, 2:04, 2:12, 2:16. I think men's clothing was less important, and it was not preserved. Women's clothing is preserved more because it's hereditary. Especially the silver-coined accessories were inherited. Of course, women made new ones along the way. Some of this tradition still remains. But already in my family i can say it stopped. My mother has those, and although my sister will inherit it, she doesn't feel need to make new one.

The music sounds vaguely Oriental, such as Chinese,or Korean. But this probably isn,t too surprising since their Turkic ancestors originated within sight of China,

Chuvash music too is largely based on pentatonic scale similar to Chinese. The vagueness may be due to the bands experimentation with mixing of Chuvash and Russian styles.

    Wise!

The music, the danse and embroidery must tell the same story.

Pentatonic music in fact was spread all over Eurasia - north to south, east to west. Who borrowed from whom is really not important. As of today people around the world believe music tarnslates to everybody.
