Rick is so lucky to be able to travel around beautiful Canada and experience things that most people don't. He got to drive a train and stand on top of a railway bridge! I wish I had his job.
I used to work on a gang in B.C. clearing a stretch of tunnels in winter. Pick and shovel work. One of my favorite memories of my working youth. Hard work good food and angry foremen.
do take a coast to coast trip, I did it three times. its just fantastic. Halifax - Montréal - Toronto - Vancouver. Always in Ist Class with a roomette of course. Great trips. once on the original CPR and twice on VIA RAIL.
I'm so envious of Rick.... I love the guy and his humor, but this is the living end.... he got to drive a bloody train in Canada over the Stony Mountain bridge! Don't really care if the loco was built on Mars! .... and I'm a CPR nut to boot. Guess I'll just keep on dreaming.
Craigellachie, British Columbia, was where the Last Spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway happened as Lord Strathcona drove it to complete the railway at almost nine thirty in the morning on Saturday, November 7th, 1885. This village is located about fifty-nine kilometres west of Revelstoke on highway 1.
Ontario Science Center had a wonderful model railway display of the Stoney Creek bridge, and a little window to peak inside the spiral tunnels. And a model train would traverse it all day. I could watch it for hours. I wonder what ever happened to that display?
That must have been a special train probably made for this feature, because westbounds don`t normally use the older Connaught track in Rogers Pass. Also, the last scene looks like it`s at Glacier station just west of the Connaught Tunnel(the one shown here).
If you live in Canada its really easy nowdays... Just go for it! There are 6 months formations given at many colleges in Canada, after your all set to be hired. But remember that being a conductor is not only sitting inside the locomotive looking at the view, you have ALOT of duties. Radio communications, double checking signals for the engineer, doing the physical work like uncoupling cars/ attaching the air hose, activation switches outdoor. Not to forget that you are on call 24/7.
@BruceCountyFinest I would love to do that, but I'm a student so I'm kind of stuck here in Vancouver. Though, I plan to experience the world and that includes Canada. Just watching Rick travel around Canada makes me so jealous. XD If it's worth every last breath, I can't wait to see this beautiful country. :)
The train tracks were built by Chinese slaves on the big Chinese famine, the Canadians traveled to china and told them that they were going to have a better life... Not to forget that Chinese blew themselves up with nitro because actual TNT is more expensive ( TNT is safer ) And those Chinese, got forgotten by everyone witch I find very sad... R.I.P
It's so sad seeing that line and thinking of the decline of passenger trains in Canada, we need daily service on all lines, then we add more lines. I should be able to go to anywhere in Canada by train at least daily but I'm really only limited to the Corridor for that, but I can't take the train to Sault Ste Marie
If I ever got to operate one of those pushcarts, I would do the whole "O Brother Where Art Thou" thing, and start telling people that they'll see cows on the roofs of cotton houses. Oh it would be fun :)
Noah S. Yea, it's quite strange, but I think it might be custom orders by CPR for an ES44 with desktop controls, cause I saw the GEVO's number just above the engineers window.
Uhm.... the first transcontinental railway in Canada was the Canadian Pacific. And, this piece was about the anniversary of the driving of the last spike on the first transcontinental railway. CN didn't exist then. Nobody ever accused railfans of being too intelligent :)
Miss Rick. His shows were funny, educational, nation building, got you involved and left you feeling better about life.
Agree 100%
I'm not gonna lie, I'd love to do his job!! It's too bad he retired too soon because that show was a lot of fun.

Get a job on the railroad
rick is a national treasure, whenever you need a laugh just turn on one of his videos
💯💯🇨🇦🇨🇦
Canadian legend. Wish he’d bring the show back. I think in our current political climate Rick Mercer could be our saviour 😂
Look at that fantastic intermodal train, in the background!
Love it, thanks for sharing this good railroad information.....Rick Mercer, a true Canadian. Proud to have you here!
Rick, you have the best job in the world.
I used to work on a gang in B.C. clearing a stretch of tunnels in winter. Pick and shovel work. One of my favorite memories of my working youth. Hard work good food and angry foremen.
Never thought i'd fall in love with a spike driver
do take a coast to coast trip, I did it three times. its just fantastic. Halifax - Montréal - Toronto - Vancouver. Always in Ist Class with a roomette of course. Great trips. once on the original CPR and twice on VIA RAIL.
My knees were rattling the whole time. Been on that train through BC. OMG.
i feel proud i get to see that scenery every time i go to work :) gotta love cp!
rick has made me question my dreams. I think I might want to be a train conductor now.
"This is the throttle and wow look how pretty that is!" (Train crashes)
Ahh, Canada was so meant to be traveled by train. Can't wait to take a coast to coast trip someday :D

Me too!
Please 6 years later ….Are you an Engineer yet?

Rick should have poked a little fun with the train crew about the American built locomotive. ES44AC built by General Electric in Erie, Pennsylvania.
truly fantastic country!!

Damn I love Canada ❤❤❤❤ thank you for all
Rick Rocks.
That was awesome.
Thanks.

going through the tunnel is amazing
This is a good episode.
Let's ride the train

Our country is beautiful isn’t it? Brings a tear to me eye
Salute to all the good people at the CPR and Parks Canada!
Trains go through such unique landscape, I wish they were more affordable.
what a beauty way to go!
I just went there yesterday!! Lol I want to meet Rick.
its 2024 and this guy is still relevant
One my favorite Canadians ever ❤️ next to David Suzuki ❤️ Migwech
Awesome videos thanks Rick , don’t get any good programs anymore
Beautiful British Columbia
Great video!

You are a good man Rick Mercer
Always want to do the train trip
I want to move to Canada someday
Grab your bags! See you in Canada!

meh
@@kermfella actually that was the CN line but close!
I ❤Rick !!!
Staggering beauty all the year around. Why do we leave the country for holidays anyway?
Watching them on the bridge and seeing how far it went down gave me anxiety
poor Rick. 3/4 of the first swing hit the rail and the rail hit back. lol!
How nice !
@tomcrissy I live in Vancouver, and I've been to the Last Spike. The monument is at Cragellachie, which is between Revelstoke and Salmon Arm.
I enjoyed this segment
Would it be safe to say, in this episode, Rick had a ONE TRACK mind???? LOL
Great video! totally cool to see!
Fantastic!!!
I love Rick Mercer, i want to do what he does!😅
One of the last rails out of Sydney Steel.... nice
This music I like at 5:51. What is it?
Beautiful AND terrifying, my favorite combination. LOL

Unmentioned here is, the last passenger train along this route was in 1990.
Best job I ever had.....
But Rick can't do doughnuts in a train!
If I ever got to operate one of those pushcarts, I would do the whole "O Brother Where Art Thou" thing, and start telling people that they'll see cows on the roofs of cotton houses.
Oh it would be fun :)
It's a kettle. We have kettles and hotplates on most locomotives.
so cool!
I had to turn it off when he got off on the bridge. Total vertigo!
That was pretty awesome.
Come on Rick. Canada adopted the metric system over 50 years ago.
The Railways didn't and are exempt from conformity under the Railway Act. They still use miles and mph
coolest job
im a cn conductor, id love to see rick at my terminal!
@tomcrissy Nope, I've been there. Its quite a bit east. Close to the alberta border
Rick was in notch 8 .....yay
Represent CANADA

Engage! Picard would be proud.
The last spike fell down the rail ohh dear!
Will do, see you there
Train are awesome.
This is the throttle, as we go back it goes towards.... Look how pretty that is... LOL
He's wearing a poppy
Bet his arms were sore the next day.
wheel is a little thin 4:11
I wonder if the camara man gets to drive stuff
I have a Canadian pacific railroad spike
that didn't look like a passenger train, so what's the conductor's job?
it's like were from the wile e. coyote cartoon!
@rootbeerlover445 It's CP not CN! I work for CP so I take offense.
I'm going too find that spike
NOv 7th, 1885 was a saturday
@OntarioRails1 Well thats better than the ACes controls
they show an ES44AC but the cab of an AC4400CW........
Noah S. It may probably be an ES44AC that Rick should be driving.
+Noah S. I know some ES44's have the cabs of an AC4400.
CrazyPilot757 export ones? I've never head of a gevo with desktop controls, including on the CPR
Noah S. Yea, it's quite strange, but I think it might be custom orders by CPR for an ES44 with desktop controls, cause I saw the GEVO's number just above the engineers window.
I work on that section of track
I run trains all the time!
i'd love to be a freight train conductor.
Rick give me a job!
@20redhead07 and im stuck being on tracks surrounded by wheat fields :(
I live in Canada
bro what's a flaccid pancake
@raceimaztion Hes gotta be?
He is slighty crazy :D
