We dont know if any of that happened as there were no survivors. The ship was seriously overloaded, was unsafe, and was in a storm. Previous simular old ships had been lost due to structural failure. This is most likely what happened.

I believe that she broke in half. 3 out of four identical ships vanished without a trace. All three were overloaded at the time. If someday any of those wrecks are found, I’d bet money on it.
